ACU-5 DET-D LT MAKCKIM USN Assistant Officer in charge Landing Craft Air Cushion, (LCAC), is the new generation of Am- phibious assault landing craft. Combining the heavy lift capability of the surface assault with the high speeds of helicopter-borne assaults, the LCAC adds a new dimension to the capabilities of an Amphibious Task Force. Capable of traveling over land and water, LCAC expands seventy percent of the world coastline to amphibious assault. This, coupled with the over-the horizon (OTH) capability of LCAC, offers the military plan- ner another method of attaining surprise when conducting an Amphibi- ous operation. In addition to standard ship to ship movement, LCAC has been proven to be an excellent and reliable platform for conducting ad- vance force and Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations.
