Drawing great crowds of excited spectators, foot' ball held the spotlight among the fall sports at Gerf mantown High School. In the early part of September approximately seventy-five hopefuls reported to Joseph Bennak, head coach following Al Webb's entrance into the Navy, attempting to place themselves in the starting linefup. With an experienced backheld ref turning from the preceding year, Coach Bannak, reverently referred to as L'Mother Bannak by his boys, concentrated his efforts on developing a strong forward wall. While the team experienced quite a few pitfalls among their opponents, the season was not what would be termed an unsuccessful one. Victories against teams from Germantown Academy, Central High School, and Norristown High School, made the season a memorable one as these teams are rivals of long standing. Undoubtedly an event of major importance in shaping the future achievements of the team was the sudden seizure of Coach Bannak with pneu- monia before the Northeast game. As a result of this, Mr. Bannak was unable to witness his team's seven-to-nothing victory over the red and yellow from Central High School. During Mr, Bannak's illness the team was coached by Paul Kehs and Lt. Alfred Webb, home on leave. Outstanding among the members of the squad were: John Erickson, diminutive guard named on the second team of the AllfPublic football squad, Dale Mushrush, and jack Trexler, tackles, Bob Hardy and Russ Kirk, backs, Irv Leswing and Bob Gibson, end and guard, respectively, all of whom were honorably mentioned for the same AllfPublic squad. At the conclusion of the season the team mem- bers elected ,as their captain, Pat Stafiieri, now serv' ing in the United States Marine Corps. Pat was outstanding throughout the season because of his linefcrashing abilities and was known to have raff fled, as Johnny Jacobs would say, quite a few of the team's better helmets. rf Ninety 'nine

Led by john L'Bonnie Fraser, one of the outf standing goal tenders in the Public High Soccer League, the freefbooters concluded a season which, although not unsuccessful, failed to bring any vicf tories home to the halls of Germantown High School. The season was not an unsuccessful one because the boys, besides tying teams from Gratz and Frankford, played a game that, while not crowded with victorious contests, was an epic of sportsmanship. The team, coached by H. Hynson, was also stalf warted by Alan Myers, member of the class of June, 1945. OCCZI' Paced by Ken Dixon, sprinter extraordinaire, the pebblefhoppers of the crossfcountry team crashed through to an unexpected fourth place in the Pubf lic High Championships. Not only successful in the championships, the team also carried away top honors in a dual meet with Frankford and Roxborough. joseph Seigert, Robert Thomas, and Royce Webb teamed with their captain, Ken Dixon, to make victories such as these possible. Too much cannot be said of Ken Dixon's work, for, had he not won, and paced the team as he did in the championships, such an illustrious record could not be recorded on this page.
