Boss, pointing to a cigarette stub on the floor, Henry, is this yours? L'Not at all sir-you saw it first. The superintendent of an insane asylum noticed one inmate pushing a wheelbarrow upside down. He asked Ray Miller why do you have it upside down? Ray replied, You don't think I'm crazy do you? I pushed it right side up yesterday and they kept filling it with gravel. Upon seeing a book entitled, What Every Man Wants, Fifi bought one to see if they spelled her name correctly. The man is lit And sharp of wit Who makes high marks that are ninety. But the man worthwhile Is the man who can smile As the teacher hands him a fifty Whatever trouble Adam had, No man in days of yore Could say, when Adam cracked a joke, I've heard that one before. Ninety-four Professor- I am going to speak on liars today. How many of you have read the twentyfiifth chapter of the text? Nearly every student raised his hand. Professor- Good, You are the group to whom I wish to speak. There is no twenty' fifth chapter. A pony in the hand is worth two in the book. The butcher was surprised when a slim young woman asked for twentyfive pounds of beef. All the same, he cut it off the joint and put it on the scales. Will you take it with you, or shall I send it to your home? he asked. Ch, she murmured, blushing prettily, 1 don't want to buy it. You see, the doctor said I had lost twentyffrive pounds, and I wanted to see what it looked like in a lump. Roberta Qboredj-L'Well, what shall we do this evening? Drawing great crowds of excited spectators, foot' ball held the spotlight among the fall sports at Gerf mantown High School. In the early part of September approximately seventy-five hopefuls reported to Joseph Bennak, head coach following Al Webb's entrance into the Navy, attempting to place themselves in the starting linefup. With an experienced backheld ref turning from the preceding year, Coach Bannak, reverently referred to as L'Mother Bannak by his boys, concentrated his efforts on developing a strong forward wall. While the team experienced quite a few pitfalls among their opponents, the season was not what would be termed an unsuccessful one. Victories against teams from Germantown Academy, Central High School, and Norristown High School, made the season a memorable one as these teams are rivals of long standing. Undoubtedly an event of major importance in shaping the future achievements of the team was the sudden seizure of Coach Bannak with pneu- monia before the Northeast game. As a result of this, Mr. Bannak was unable to witness his team's seven-to-nothing victory over the red and yellow from Central High School. During Mr, Bannak's illness the team was coached by Paul Kehs and Lt. Alfred Webb, home on leave. Outstanding among the members of the squad were: John Erickson, diminutive guard named on the second team of the AllfPublic football squad, Dale Mushrush, and jack Trexler, tackles, Bob Hardy and Russ Kirk, backs, Irv Leswing and Bob Gibson, end and guard, respectively, all of whom were honorably mentioned for the same AllfPublic squad. At the conclusion of the season the team mem- bers elected ,as their captain, Pat Stafiieri, now serv' ing in the United States Marine Corps. Pat was outstanding throughout the season because of his linefcrashing abilities and was known to have raff fled, as Johnny Jacobs would say, quite a few of the team's better helmets. rf Ninety 'nine Led by john L'Bonnie Fraser, one of the outf standing goal tenders in the Public High Soccer League, the freefbooters concluded a season which, although not unsuccessful, failed to bring any vicf tories home to the halls of Germantown High School. The season was not an unsuccessful one because the boys, besides tying teams from Gratz and Frankford, played a game that, while not crowded with victorious contests, was an epic of sportsmanship. The team, coached by H. Hynson, was also stalf warted by Alan Myers, member of the class of June, 1945. OCCZI' Paced by Ken Dixon, sprinter extraordinaire, the pebblefhoppers of the crossfcountry team crashed through to an unexpected fourth place in the Pubf lic High Championships. Not only successful in the championships, the team also carried away top honors in a dual meet with Frankford and Roxborough. joseph Seigert, Robert Thomas, and Royce Webb teamed with their captain, Ken Dixon, to make victories such as these possible. Too much cannot be said of Ken Dixon's work, for, had he not won, and paced the team as he did in the championships, such an illustrious record could not be recorded on this page. One lz11f1drr'd ,ross Country I'aCli Ym Placing a well-balanced squad on the field, Mr. Baron, coach of the track team, has not been able to witness ine results of his handiwork up to the time this article was written. A hint of the team's power was given on April 27th and 28th when a selected group of runners distinguished themselves at the fifteenth annual Penn Relay. This team of runners, coupled with a team of fieldfmen coached by Joseph Bannak, have shown up well in their first two encounters with Central and Overbrook. While the team was not too im- pressive in the meet with Central, they distinguished themselves when they were unfortunate enough to lose to a strong Overbrook team by 'llfz points. Outstanding members of the team were: Bob Moser, Ken Kellner, john McAfee, hurdles, Gene Watts, Bob Burgess, sprintsg Ken Dixon, Joe Sei' gert, Bill Lichten, Bob Thomas, distanccg Bob Miles, john Miller, Monty Gardener, pole vaultg Bob Lowry, broad jump: Bob Johnson, john Miller, Bob Ona Izzmdred 0110 Miles, Ralph Guthrie, high jump, and Ralph Guthf rie, shot put. John Miller, Monty Gardner, pole vault, Bob Lowry, broad jumpg Bob johnson, John Miller, Bob Miles, Ralph Guthrie, high jump, and Ralph Guthrie, shot put. Though lacking in manpower, as seems to be a general thing in today's world, the musclefflexing men of the gym team made a commendatory record for themselves this past season. Wiiiiiing meets with Girard and South Philadel' phia, and placing fifth in the Public High Gym' nastic's Championships, proved to be the prme highlights of the season. Two boys, Bob Miles and Hugo Stein, returned from the 1944 team to aid the squad in its ay complishments. Miles, perhaps the most outstandl ing of all the team members, placed fourth in the championships and was noted for his work on the side horse. HIGH SCHCDCDL 19 xi -l-ennis Although not looking too impressive at the time of this writing, the tennis team, coached by Mr. Jacobs and captained by Leon Scott, may have some impressive laurels to bring back to Germantown at the conclusion of the season. Golf Teeing off, and replacing all necessary divots, the golf team seems to be of the timber that will make a good showing for itself this season. Coached by Paul Kehs, and captained by Bonnie Fraser, the team is composed of such Qi! ff S- farm, ., W Ver, U X if tl llllrllllf Held up for three weeks by poor Weather, the team showed a lack of practice in matches held against Penn Charter and West Philadelphia. The team is composed of Bill McKinley, Nor- bert Aicher, Ed Haines, Harry Schuster, singles, and Dick Klosterman and Leon Scott, doubles. stalwarts as Bill Bencker, Rich Benner, Dan Fera, Dick Van Vranken, and Jim Bresnan. While it is too early, at the time of this writ' ing, to enumerate any of the match scores, an excellent season seems to be in the making. X ix I ll SIN will - ng if lf .. Losing to the swimmers from Northeast High in the iinal relay event by a margin of only a few inches, the Baranmen lost both a dual meet to the Archives and the championship. Prior to the dual meet with Northeast, the team had emerged victorious from meets with teams such as those from Central, LaSalle, and Southern. Don Ratayski, elected captain of the team at the season's close, won the 5O'yard freestyle event at the championships and would have gained the diving crown had he not slipped on his last dive. Excelling in the backstroke event was Dick Lott, now in the United States Navy. Another stalwart of the team, also serving his country in the Navy as this is written, was Harold Markley, who swam in the 220 and 100fyard freestyle events. Don Rafferty, with George Butler, swam breaststroke par excellence. Contributing materially to the team's successful record was Leon Gregory, ff diver and freestyler. Mr. A. Baran, coach of the team, is proud, not only of his team's record in com' f petition, but of the fact that several of the past team members are now serving as instructors in swimming, helping to save the lives of many of our fighting men. lil 'L'-ff: 'vs 0110 lzmzdrud three ,V ew -ff Q fb F'- J' v :B N 'xv X X Q 0 Y' M ,Q - 3,4 K QQ X W ,,., Q .5 R xisziqlw F .11:,, ,,-,., ,,, X .Z WS x X ,Q ya ,. 1 serif iw FS? Sterling in character, he lived without shame or pretenseg with integrity of mindg sound in judg- ment, a seeker after truth, with fidelity to truth as he found it, a man of convictions and the courage of his convictions. His sense of duty was deter' mined by a conscience that knew no wavering. Nothing human was ever foreign to him is the thought from a Latin poet that aptly applies to him. He had a fine sense of loyalty,-to his home, his church, his country, and to his vocation. He was proud of his nation which he loved. He was a zealous student of her history and followed her intricate problems of the day. In his teaching he never failed to exalt in thought, and exemplify in practice, the fundamental virtues of personal character,-obedience to law, a sense of duty and personal accountability, respect for the conventions of society, love of truth, and faith in a moral order. As sponsor of student government, of the swim- ming team, of the tennis team, and of many other student organizations, he held a place of high Eight erciva Strauss A man respected A man honored A man loved Qiw class adviser and friendf' fFrom thc dedication ofthe first record book, Class of 1917 J honor. In the larger community of Germantown, business men and civic groups looked to him for inspiring leadership and invaluable assistance. The most valuable contribution that Mr. Strauss made to the life of Germantown High School was the enriching influence he exerted upon the lives of his pupils and his associates in the faculty. By the force of his character he secured the respect and obedience of his students who admired and loved him. Through his sympathetic understanding and wise counselling he was a moulder of thought and character. His life was an inspiration to noble living. His pupils cherish for him an abiding es' teem and grateful affection. Fortunate the growing youth who came under the influence of such a teacher. His zest for life, his sense of humor, his enjoy' ment of wholesome fun, and his interest in sports made fellowship with him one of the fine privileges of life. With an apt story to clinch a point, with an ac' cumulated wealth of spiritual and intellectual ref sources at his command, in unruifled good humor, he somehow inspired all who knew him to live in the light of their highest faith. To every American, this meaning has been broadened immeasurably. Instead of merely giving to, we are now doing for our neighbor. Your class is truly a war class. You have experienced the emerf gency measures of the times throughout your entire life in Germantown High School. Many of these measures will happily be temporary, but it is hoped that those which modify your attitude toward your fellow men will be permanent. To insure permanence, a planned program for better living is essential. Outstanding contributions of your class in this respect give ample evidence that your service in the world at large will be sincere, natural and effective. May your opportunities be recognized and your success without limit. Very sincerely yours, O Eleven 3 I-Y' ,LN I N li v' 'ffl . '51 lglr. 1 LW x 2 - , 5. Mason After twentyfseven years of faithful service, Dr. John E. Mason has left our school to accept the position of Editorial Assistant in the curriculum office of the Board of Education. Dr, lvlason, as a memher of the English Department, organized the Dramatic Glulw in the school, the Germantown Play' crs for alumni, and the Phuph Cluh for the study of phonetics. His extrafcurricular activities were numerous and varied. He had charge of the stage and stage crew, and as a result of his earliest en- deavors, we have upftofdate stage and lighting equipment. He was chairman of the Lilarary Comf mittee, and the many carefully selected hooks, tof gether with several which he himself wrote, hear testimony of his scholarly activities. He also sucf ccssfully sponsored many senior classes and coached their plays. Germantown High School has suffered a real loss. His many friends wish him success in his new undertaking. Bewildered and meek, we wandered through the halls looking for the girls' gym and the boys' lunchroom. Elevator passes, lunchroom passes and tickets to the swimming pool on the fifth floor fwhich we're still trying to findj were offered to us at a bargain price by the seniors. We appeared in school looking like ads for G. H. S., covered from head to toe with pins and stickers. However, the excitement soon died down, and in a few weeks we learned to call ourselves Sophomores! The Victory Corps was organized, and many of us worked long hours after school doing our bit of service for our country. Germantown enjoyed one of its most suc' cessful football seasons in many years. We pushed and shoved trying to get on the trolleys and buses fwhat if we lost an arm or a big toe, we won the game, didn't we7j. Cowbells jangled throughout the halls, much to the distress of our teachers and each victory brought shouts and cheers from all of us. Through the service which our boys gave to the teams, these victories were won. 1943: A new program was introduced, including late and early classes, and four periods of gym each week-Oh, my aching back! We were conditioned for the new and strenuous program we were to follow-One, two, one, two! Groans and grunts could be heard in the gym classes and students blossomed out in an interesting assortment of bandages, but we pulled through and we're still here! Our beloved Dr. Seely left us, and we set aside a day in his honor. Will we ever forget Dr. Seely Day at Germantown? Mr. Nichols was welcomed by students and faculty members alike when he came to take his place as our new principal. Germantown has profited greatly from Mr. Nichols' untiring service. 1944: Gur football coach, Mr. Webb, left us to join the Navy- Anchors Aweigh - However, we weren't disappointed in our new coach, Mother Bannakf' Twelzfy-six - CLASS CDF JU E '45 That great day when we had our first class organization meeting arrived and the fact that we were on our way toward graduating finally dawned on us! We felt united as a class for the first time and each of us resolved to do his best to make our class the best class ever to graduate from Germantown. Who doesn't remember those 'hilarious bond rallies complete with a chorus line fremember the snappy finale to the gym teacher's skit?j and Frankie! We went over the top though, and a bomber was given the name L'Germantown High School in our honor. And what about the night G. H. S. took over the Vernon Theater and had such a swell time at the special showing of Laura 1945: Solemnly, we filled the front rows of the auditorium on Movefup Day in a very proud, impressive ceremony. We were indeed proud to bear the new title of Seniors. On January 27th, the Germantown Woman's Club was the scene of our first class activity, the gala MovefUp'Hop. Students and faculty alike declared it to be a success. We were proud to present the Junior Town Meeting from our auditorium and many of our classmates distinguished themselves that day. The Clipper won a Hrst place award in the Columbia Press contest for the second consecutive year. The efforts of the Clipper staff were largely responsible for this success. Even if we didn't have cars, we all managed to get to the Cricket Club for the prom of June ninth. The big night found us in our most glamorous gowns and sharpest dinner jackets. MovefUp Day came again. This time it was we who walked out of assembly for the last time. The luncheon at McCallister's surpassed all our anticipations. The hidden talents of our classmates were brought to light in the entertainment afterwards. JUNE l9! That was the eagerly awaited date for all of us, We were actually graduating, a thing which happened to others, but never to us. The green and white robes and red roses made a beautiful and impressive sight. As we sang our Alma Mater for the last time, we pledged ourselves anew to a life of service. To our teachers and those who have guided us through our high school days we owe a debt of gratitude for preparing us to be of service in the community and to our fellow men. At this time let us remember our classmates who unexpectedly left for the armed forces, and also those who will follow them after graduation.
