Mr Graham Retires Head of the Department of MQfhemQl1CS Smce the Orgcmlzatxon of the School HENRY GRAHAM has been a resident of Philadelphia since his birth which occurred on the 23rd of May 18!3 He received his education in the public schools of his native city graduating in lanuary 1891 from the Central High School From there he went to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where he specialized in E onomics and Sociology ln Iune 1893 he received the degree of Ph B lmmedlately after his graduation from the Wharton School Mr Graham taught for one year in the grade schools of Phlladelphia and at the same time continued his studies at the Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania Here he acquired his interest in Mathematics and particularly in problems and the philosophy of numbers After one year of teaching in the grades Mr Graham went to the Central High School in 1894 as instructor in Mathematics He taught also the closely allied subiect of Astronomy assisting Professor Monroe Snyder in the oper ation of the Central High School Telescope ln addition to this work he assisted in the establishment of the Mathematical Seminary The excellence of his work was rewarded by his promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor in 1899 and a Full Professor in 1905 work for he took an active part in the management of the athletics of the school serving for many years as Treasurer of the Athletic Association When the Gerrnantown High School was established in 1915 Mr Graham was appointed l-lead of the D partment of Mathematics which position he occupied for a period of twenty years Ho was an ex eptionally fine teacher preparing his students with a thoroughness that amply qualified them to continue their studies successfully at what ver institution they might select Besides his classroom and departmental work Mr Graham was interested n the school organi ation and for years constructed the mayor roster for the entire school The efficiency and accuracy with which this work was done can be appreciated only by those who have an understanding of the intricacies of the roster of a big school Mr Graham was an omnivorous reader He was a member of the Mer car tile Library which gave him the opportunity for wide reading in the fields of fiction and history During his years at th Germantown Hlgh School Mr Graham com manded to a high degree the respect and the affections of the students and the faculty alike lt is with the deepest regret of the entire school that he has found 1t necessary at this time to resign from h1s position in the faculty ' 1 E 1 .
