so called off day at Bryn Athyn the next Friday Although we led at half time by a score of I4 I3 our attack weakened considerably in the second half This let down on our part enabled Bryn Athyn to come from behind and win the game 33 I4 Thus G A suffered its first defeat luckily however at the hands of a non league opponent The dawn of Frlday October 25 brought the all lmportant day when C A was to malceits debut mto the lnteracademlc League I940 season Our first league adversary was our arch rivals Penn Charter wlth whom we have been competing for the past fifty three years Apparently the bitter defeat suffered the previous week at Bryn Athyn was still burning in the hearts of the C A lads From the very outset they showed complete superiority over an outclassed P C eleven and gave them a drubblng right ln their own backyard by a score of Z8 I3 The boys had regained that old fight Wnth this spirit they traveled to Friends Central one week later to play what proved to be the crucial game of the season From the moment the starting whistle blew until the very last second the game was filled with hard aggressive football Bob Safrm behind a stone wall of lnterference returned a punt seventy yards for G A s score and ack Hoey s skillful toe added the extra pomt to make G A lead 7 0 Undaunted Frlends Central came back strongly ln the last mmutes of the game to push over a touchdown Since their attempt for the extra point was foiled again G A emerged victorious 7 6 Thus our second league contest was won by one fateful point Seven days later C A engaged a bigger but far from better Haverford team at Haverford Although their heavier team was repulsed three times within the Eve yard marker by the scrappmg G A boys the fates had destined a victory for the Main Liners With only three minutes of play remaining our opponents vaunted aerial attack clicking on all cylmders drove across the winning touchdown and left G A on the short end of a 7 0 score creating a three way tie for the championship The following week before a throng of wide eyed spectators Captain im Hennessey playing his last game of school football paced a spirited G A team to a I3 6 victory over Episcopal Academy By virtue of this victory C A well earned the right to figure ln a deadlock for the championship with Episcopal and Haverford A competent coach eleven hard charging regulars and a host of capable reserves again won League honors for Germantown Academy for the success of the I940 season cannot be attributed to the achievements of any one man but to the united efforts of aggressive boys and coach all with a strong will to win The crowning glory of the season came when the sportswrlters of the Philadelphia newspapers chose four of our fellows for the All lnteracademlc League first team ack Hoey tackle Bud Honeysett guard Bob Safrln back and ack Denton end Barney Cunningham guard lm l-lennessey back and ohn lVl1ller back were placed on the second team Further honor came to Bob Safrln who won the trophy for greatest indi vidual achievement in the Germantown Mt Airy and Chestnut Hill area given annually by the Lions Club of Germantown Graduatmg members of this years team are Bull Carothers Barney Cunningham Bob Donnelly ohn Henkels lm Hennessey ack Hoev Bud l-loneysett ack Lough rldge Chick Lutklns ack Roper Bob Safrin ,lack Welply Bill Werner and ack Denton Those returning next year are Captaln elect Bill Luff Tom Hyndman ohn Miller Bill Shellenberger Dick Irwin Al Sigel Art Parks Gentry Knight Art Garrabrant and Cruse Lewis to whom we extend good wishes for another successful season 63 Despite this defeat, our boys hoped to beat the undefeated Episcopal team, thus . - ' . A 'Q AQB5j7i, FOOTBALL ERMANTOWN ACADEMY 28 Penn Charter l3' A vlctory nn thls game alone constxtutes a successful season for G A grldders However not satlsfled wlth downing thelr arch rlvals thls year s squad sought to conquer all foes and after four weeks hard physlcal traxnmg as a firm foundatlon the Germantown Academy foot ball machine under the able guldance of Coach Coop French and the fine leadershlp of Captaln lm Hennessey rolled on to a vlctorlous season Frlday September 27 found C A well prepared to engage the Valley Forge MllltafV Academy eleven at School Lane and C-reene Streets xn a one sided battle endmg wlth G A on the long end of a 32 0 score The scorlng parade was led by Bob Safrln whose con slstent runnlng ab1l1ty proved a valuable asset to the team throughout the entire season The team looked very promlslng and was destined to achleve still greater vlctorles A week later the trl color aggregatlon encountered a scrappy Cheltenham Hugh School team and again toppled their foes by a score of 20 6 jack Welply our hard hlttlng center exhlblted great prowess ln blocklng but suffered an mjury xn the game Hrs absence for the remainder of the season was sorely felt by the team After four more days of tough practlce G A was ready to meet ohn Bartram Hugh School a hlghly rated opponent that had just thls year entered mto the Publlc Hlgh School League Thls game proved to be one of the best played of the year When the dm of the fray was over the score read G A I3 ohn Bartram 0 After thls thlrd consecu tlve vlctory the boys set thelr mark for stlll another the followlng week There comes a txme during the season of every team when the players cannot work together as they should resulting IH generally poor play The G A team experlenced thls 62 , , , - .
