ALBERT L. LAWSING YESTERDAY AND TODAY PROFESSOR J. B. SHEETZ McClellandtown High School—1907 LEWIS HAWKINS NICHOLAS MERGEN President A. B. CARNACK, B.S., M.Ed. Superintendent oj Schools California State Teachers College, Penn State University, Columbia University, University of Pittsburgh D. J. MORRIS Secretary oj the Board oj Directors 4 BOARD OF M. S. PAPA Pice President A. J. CANTINI Secretary M. J. MIHALL1K Treasurer DIRECTORS EARL BRASHEAK MARIO TIBERI ANTHONY TOKISH In Memory Of DR. J. HOLMES SANGSTON DR. J. HOLMES SANGSTON The class of 1957 pauses to pay tribute to Doctor J. Holmes Sangston who passed away November 7, 1956. His acquaintance and friendship with teachers, alumna, and students extended over many years. He served faithfully as a member of the school board for thirty years where his timely suggestions and wise counsels were valued. In the year 1950 we dedicated and named our Football Stadium in his honor. To one who in his living and his thinking voiced the noblest and the best, our school feels grateful for an example set, for services attained, and for a life revealed fullest in its humbleness. “He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children, who has filled his niche and accomplished his task, who has left the world better than he found it, who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty, or failed to express it; who has always looked for the best in others and given the best he had; whose life was an inspiration; whose memory a benediction.” 5 Administrators and student senate officers HIGH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION 6 Principal’s Message The educational program of our high school has changed materially in the last fifty years. We have made improvements in our physical plant, in the curriculum, and in the activities program, but our basic philosophy of education has remained the same: To provide fundamental knowledge and skills and to prepare boys and girls to fulfill their responsibilities in a democratic society. To be the principal of our high school as it celebrates its 50th year in service to the youth of German Township is indeed an honor. GEORGE J. PLAVA, B.S., M.A. LI-OYD A. WRIGHT, A.B. Plays—a hundred odd—to learn. Bones that ache—parched throats that bum. Chalktalk periods—sweat and heat— Blocking dummies, tired feet. Signal calling—punting drills. Exhausted bodies—stubborn wills. Thus—as schedule games draw near— The grid machine goes in high gear. Stadium crowds that hoot and cheer, Touchdown runners in the clear. Sweeping runs around the ends, Goal line thrusts the team defends. Tacklers spilled by vicious blocks— Half-dazed stars with tousled locks. Hard line bucks and center plunges, Pass attacks and savage lunges. All of these and many more Thrill the crowd and mount the score. Suits and gearing stored till spring— Other sports now have their fling. All-American teams appear, Stadia everywhere are drear. Curbstone critics replay games, Coaches speak on future aims. Schools award their monograms. Players buckle for exams. Fans and players wait the call Of another season in the fall. —Stan W. Pat Mr Sheetz Writes our FIFTY YEAR POEM Me Sheetz Long Time Principal and Author of our High School Song writes as follows: “Let there be light!” Omnific words God spoke some thousand years ago; “And there was light” first-born of God, The torch by which one learns to know. Creative words flashed brilliant stars, An “Alma Mater” came to be; A High School first proclaimed by men, Its purpose though, was God’s decree. For fifty years so grand you stood, You reared your children well; And “Mother Dear” they cherish you, To all of them you still excel. Yes, fifty years ago, dear School ’Twas first your lamp was lit; Through all the darkest moments, dear, You’ve done your noble bit. You gave out light to humble souls, The dawn became both bright and clear; Enlighten all who need thee still, And brighter shine from year to year. Emotions deep now fill our hearts, Shine on to serve your friends, Let glorious light dispel all night Until the century ends. Shine on, shine on! O Light of Truth, And “KNOW the Truth” as God hath said; For “Knowledge is Power” in each dark hour To brighten all pathways ahead. You never harbored much complaint, Though pleasures oft were few; The world does not just always dish Out fare as sweet as we could wish. Yet often sweeter than is due. Still homelike is this sacred spot To us who stand and think, and gaze; With half a century now gone by, And memories filled with other days. Good bye! Good bye! Dear Township High! If eye be moist, ’tis friendly tear; Mid scenes that gave it rise, Fond memory bids me drop it here. Alumni standing ever true, And loyal teachers looking back Remember still from what you grew, Will shout All Hail! To “Red and Black.” —J. B. S. 88 FIFTY YEARS AT G.T.H.S. HISTORY ALMA MATER Plato said, “The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future life.” With this thought in mind, the men and women of German Twp., in the latter part of the first decade of the present century, realized the necessity of providing secondary education for the youth of this community. The Board of Directors took the nec- essary action, and German Township High School came into existence in the fall of 1906. The institution, at first known as McClelland town High School, graduated its first class of eight students under the principalship of L. F. Hawkins in 1909. In the fall of 1909, Mr. Lawsing became the high school prin- cipal and his two faculty members were Mr. Bortzfield and Mr. J. B. Sheet . The following year, Mr. Sheetz was elected to the principalship, and held that position for seventeen years. Many students, who studied under Mr. Sheetz during that period in the formative years of German Twp. High School, remember him as a man of high ethical character, sincerity of purpose, and pos- sessed with deep sense of integrity. Our high school motto and our high school song were both com- posed by Mr. Sheetz. Now retired, Mr. Sheetz is a resident of Union town, Pa. During these years, the student body grew steadily and the Board of Directors found it necessary to construct a new build- ing. In 1915, classes assembled for the first time in our present structure. The members of the Board of Directors at that time were J. F. McCracken, D. B. Christopher, V. P. .Keener, D. A. Huhn, J. L. Barber, J. W. Franks, and D. W. Poundstone. No class graduated in 1916 because the course requirement had been changed to four years. The class of 1917, the first class to graduate from the new building, consisted of twenty-four seniors. In 1927, a German Twp. graduate, Robert R. McCombs, be- came the principal of our high school. Mr. McCombs, who served until 1936, is now deceased. James L. Zimmerman became the principal of his Alma Mater in 1936 and continued in that capacity until 1944. During his term of Office, the largest class, the class of 1939, consisting of 197 students, graduated from German Township High School. At that time Mr. Zimmerman had a staff of twenty-four faculty members and the enrollment numbered about 1100 students. Mr. Zimmerman at present is a school administrator in the Pittsburgh area. Mr. James A. Gault, also a graduate of German Twp. High, assumed the principalship in 1944 and served until 1950. Mr. Gault now operates his own business in Uniontown, Pa. In 1950 another alumnus of our high school, Mr. George J. Plava, became the principal of his Alma Mater; he still continues in that capacity. Our present faculty consists of thirty teachers. Twenty of these are graduates of German Twp. High School. In tracing the history of Supervising Principals in German Twp., we find that Mr. W. F. H. Westzel, first held that office. Assuming his duties in 1908, Mr. Wentzel, served until 1911 when he was succeeded by Mr. Albert Montgomery and who served until 1918. In 1918, Mr. R. F'. Rudisill, became supervising prin- cipal and continued in that office until 1926, when Mr. Ira N. Riffle became the administrator. He held that position until 1934 when Mr. J. Carman Newcomer took office and continued to serve until his retirement in 1954. Our present superintendent, Mr. A. B. Carnack, was elected to office in 1954. German Township High School has justified the faith of those splendid citizens who promoted its establishment. Abo..t 4500 of the youth of German Twp. received their di- plomas from our high school. Our graduates may be found in practically all of the professions, in industry, and in business. All, however, feel a sense of gratitude to the school they love the best, “Dear Old German Township High.” —Mary Murphy The school we love the best, is German Township High— And far above the rest, her flag shall always fly We’ll guard her emblem well, that none may float ahead Of Alma Mater’s banner fair the Black and Red. CHORUS Oh! Black and Red we love thy fair, fair folds; A treasure that each son and daughter sacred holds. Then proudly wave as years go fleeting by ... . The Emblem of our dear old German Township High Hail to the Alma Mater that we love, And love her well, as each can tell, Hail to the flag that floats above them all, The Black and Red must float ahead, Hail to the motto that we love the best. “Scientia potestas est.” Wave Red and Black forever Falter may you never Dear old German Township High Thy praises we will sing, Oh! Alma Mater Dear Our songs and cheers shall ring, for you from year to year. The lessons we have learned in life shall be our guide, And may we all at duty’s call turn back with pride. J. B.
