INTRCDDUCIN6 rom-EWORD 'lihe youth of America recognize the many advantages of growing up in a democracy where freedom and equal opportunity are offered to all. This fact has been even more forcibly brought to our attention by our older hrother, sister, and teachers who have returned to us from the many different countries after the war telling us how the other half live. Among the rights granted to each citizen of our country is that of securing an education. Un the pages of this Laureola we present to the readers, the youth of German Township in pursuit of knowledge. The hook portrays both the social and scholastic life of the boys and girls who dwell within the halls of our high school. The school administration, the classrooms, the social organizations, and the extra-curricular activities-all comhine to furnish an ideal environ- ment for learning the principles of democratic living. Tl-l E E DITO RS resemf The People We Knew In years to come, there will always remain with us a vivid memory of our schoolmates in all their dif- ferent moods. The Johns and Janes, the Bettys and the Bobs, the classroom clowns, and the steady intel- lectuals-each one of them typify some past phase of our school life. The Fun We Had Yes, the Tri-Hi-Y initiation was fun. But just being together was reason enough to have funf' Whether in a classroom, in the library, on the stage, or attending a noon-time dance, we were gay. Our daring escapades, visits to the office will all be re- membered with a feeling of nostelgia for the care- free days at good old German. The Sports We Played Our heroes in the world of sports-our football, basketball and baseball players-we remember them all with a genuine feeling of pride and ownership. Nothing so aroused our school spirit as did the pros- pect of an exciting game with some well-established rival.

OUR SUPERIN'l'IiNDliNil Carman Newcomer German 'liownship High School, as all democratic organizations, must have the customary three departments: executive, legislative and judical. The executive department is headed hy hlr. .I. Carman Newcomer, the Superintendent of Schools: the legislative is done by the Board of lfducationg and the judicial-many of us have learned its workings, often to our sorrow, when sent to the Principals' office to answer for some infraction of the rules. Now that we know the gen- eral structure we shall see what the particular tasks of each section are. It is Mr. Newcomer's joh to coordinate the numerous departments and activities of the Ger- man Township schools into a smooth-running machine. This may not seem like a large task to the ordinary person: hut when one considers that there are 2,852 students and 97 teachers in the schools, he sees the situation in a diflferent light. ,lust as any other executive, lVlr. Newcomer must report the results ol' his ellorts to the hotly of directors employing him. Part of this report is de- voted to the seemingly trivial things that occur in our scholastic careers, such as health and at- tendance statistics. 'lihe progress of our grades, sometimes taken lightly hy us, is studied thorough- ly in making this report. Another complicated task that falls to our superintendent is preparing a hudget. 'lihis is an itemized estimate of what financial appropriations will he needed for the coming school year. It is designed to maintain current standards, and at the same time, allow margin lor emergency changes. ,lust from these liew examples one can easily see that heing a school superintendent is no small ioh, and we are grateful for the splendid work lWr. Newcomer is doing considering our many limited facilities. 6
