During the past few months we have labored diligently to provide you with the mater- ial which you now see before you. This is your book moulded for you and dedicated to you. We hope it will prove a never-ceasing source of enjoyment and pleasant reminiscence. Tl-l E E DITO RS resemf The People We Knew In years to come, there will always remain with us a vivid memory of our schoolmates in all their dif- ferent moods. The Johns and Janes, the Bettys and the Bobs, the classroom clowns, and the steady intel- lectuals-each one of them typify some past phase of our school life. The Fun We Had Yes, the Tri-Hi-Y initiation was fun. But just being together was reason enough to have funf' Whether in a classroom, in the library, on the stage, or attending a noon-time dance, we were gay. Our daring escapades, visits to the office will all be re- membered with a feeling of nostelgia for the care- free days at good old German. The Sports We Played Our heroes in the world of sports-our football, basketball and baseball players-we remember them all with a genuine feeling of pride and ownership. Nothing so aroused our school spirit as did the pros- pect of an exciting game with some well-established rival. INTRCDDUCIN6 rom-EWORD 'lihe youth of America recognize the many advantages of growing up in a democracy where freedom and equal opportunity are offered to all. This fact has been even more forcibly brought to our attention by our older hrother, sister, and teachers who have returned to us from the many different countries after the war telling us how the other half live. Among the rights granted to each citizen of our country is that of securing an education. Un the pages of this Laureola we present to the readers, the youth of German Township in pursuit of knowledge. The hook portrays both the social and scholastic life of the boys and girls who dwell within the halls of our high school. The school administration, the classrooms, the social organizations, and the extra-curricular activities-all comhine to furnish an ideal environ- ment for learning the principles of democratic living. The people we knew, the fun we had, the sports we played-they will all be remembered. G6 60,0!6 0326 QIZEW The pause that refreshesn 5 OUR SUPERIN'l'IiNDliNil Carman Newcomer German 'liownship High School, as all democratic organizations, must have the customary three departments: executive, legislative and judical. The executive department is headed hy hlr. .I. Carman Newcomer, the Superintendent of Schools: the legislative is done by the Board of lfducationg and the judicial-many of us have learned its workings, often to our sorrow, when sent to the Principals' office to answer for some infraction of the rules. Now that we know the gen- eral structure we shall see what the particular tasks of each section are. It is Mr. Newcomer's joh to coordinate the numerous departments and activities of the Ger- man Township schools into a smooth-running machine. This may not seem like a large task to the ordinary person: hut when one considers that there are 2,852 students and 97 teachers in the schools, he sees the situation in a diflferent light. ,lust as any other executive, lVlr. Newcomer must report the results ol' his ellorts to the hotly of directors employing him. Part of this report is de- voted to the seemingly trivial things that occur in our scholastic careers, such as health and at- tendance statistics. 'lihe progress of our grades, sometimes taken lightly hy us, is studied thorough- ly in making this report. Another complicated task that falls to our superintendent is preparing a hudget. 'lihis is an itemized estimate of what financial appropriations will he needed for the coming school year. It is designed to maintain current standards, and at the same time, allow margin lor emergency changes. ,lust from these liew examples one can easily see that heing a school superintendent is no small ioh, and we are grateful for the splendid work lWr. The Board of Education acts almost exactly as any other legislative body. We think that you should know these seven men. They are Dr. A. E. Coughanour, Dr. H. Sangston, Law- rence E. McGee, E. W. Hamilton, B. Christopher, M. A. Sterbutzel, and Clarence L. Davis, This representative group of the people of German Township are faced with a maze of tasks that makes a geometry proof or a Latin translation seem like mere childls play. Perhaps one of the most important of these is that of selecting Hthosev essential people, the teachers. An equally important problem is the appropriation of money or the various current expenses and levying taxes to obtain it. These men also proclaim the holidays that are so vital to student moral. Since they are rarely seen in action, it may seem that the board has a rather small part in the operation of the schoolg but their tireless labor is shown by the results attained. We thank them. The judicial consist of Mr. Gault and his corps of teachers. Every student in German Town- ship High School is aware of their duties. It is a Webster-Rauland, central radio and sound system. 'lihis new device has a wide variety of applications as well as a wide variety of pro- gram sources. Incorporated in the central cabinet, located in Mr. Gault's office is a player which provides continuity of recorded programs. For example, complete classics, operas and like programs can he delivered over the system without inter- ruption as well as complete recorded instructions and lessons. Also incorporated in this same central set is a radio over which educational programs or programs of world events are readily availahle for distrihution to or all rooms ofthe building. The third and most important feature of this sound system is the micro- phones through which the Superintendent or Principal can talk to every room or any selection of rooms in our building making announcements or giving any gen- eral instruction to the students and teachers. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On September 3, 1943 some three hundred excited and not a little bewildered newcomers awaited entry into German Township High School with high hopes for the coming years. Little did we realize the events that would follow. There would be times when conscientious work would be required of us and times when we could laugh and be care free. It was amazing how well we accomplished both traits, for our class displayed a quality of co-operativeness and unselfishness from its early beginnings. To embark on our career as Freshmen, we chose Ruby Dulik, president, Beverly Franks, vice president, Elizabeth Latsko, secretary: Rudy Maytas, treasurer. We participated in assemblies, homeroom programs and sports. Then, at last, came our first party. It was a Freshman-Sophomore party, which enabled us to become acquainted with fellow students. Our Sophomore year we elected as officers: Eleanor Gurick, president: Gert- rude Christobeck, vice president, Louise Yokovac, secretary, and Mary Spenik, treasurer. To climax our Sophomore year, we forgot our shyness, and wholeheart- edly attended the annual class party. There we met many of our classmates and guests and all enjoyed a memorable evening. Next year we would be upper-class- men, which only two years ago had seemed a distant dream. It was on September 4, 1945 that we once again returned to our school. This was to be our big year, a year in which we could take a lead in studies, sports and activities. Our ambitions were realized as more students reached the honor roll and contributed their talents to the newspaper, the Laureola and clubs. It was during this year, that our boys took prominent place in sports, many of them becoming members of varsity teams. Joe Horwat, Eleanor Gurrick, James Parker, and Mary Spinek, served as our officers. In place of a Junior Play, we presented two one-act plays which gave more students a chance to participate. Then, to highlight our exciting year, we had a semi-formal prom in our high school gym- nasium. Our goal was reached-Seniors at lastl We elected the following officers: Andy Deli, president, Bill To'kish, vice president, Frances Nevlud, secretary, Myrna Bat- taglini, treasurer. Once organized, our class at once fell in line with a Very busy schedule. The first major event was our Christmas party, followed by a play, Bot- toms Upv. To climax happy fleeting years came the Senior Prom. For a period of four years, this organization has been absent from our extra- curricular activities. The first attempt to reorganize the body was made last year, under the direction of lVlr. Blanc. Due to his departure, lVlrs. Galla graciously ac- cepted the responsibility of becoming its faculty advisor. The Student Senate consists of the presidents of each home room, in addi- tion to the Senior Class officers, junior Class president and vice-president, and Sophomore Class president. Meetings are held every Thursday during the ac- tivity period. It is each member's responsibility to keep his standards high, and thereby help other students to do likewise. There is no doubt that this Student Senate is a hard working one-one that must strive to establish a precedent for future Senates in our school. Therefore it is safe to assume that the accomplishments of the Student Senate will be in direct proportion to the quality of support given by the students, faculty, and administrative authorities. Each year ten percent of the Juniors and Five percent of the Seniors are inducted, provided they have the necessary activity points and good character ratings by the faculty. All these students have recogniz- ed the virtues of this society, Scholarship, Character, and Service and Leadership. At an impressive candle-light service, on March 5, new members were induct- ed. Freshmen and Sophomores were guests. Representing the four virtues of the society were Elinor Newcomer, scholaship, Frances Nevlud, service, Marie Far- kosofsky, leadership, and Beverly Franks, character. The purpose of this club is, To create, maintain and extend throughout the school and community, high standards of Christian charac- terf' All members try to adhere to their motto, Clean speech, clean sports, clean scholarship, and clean livingf' To become a member of the club, a member must subscribe to the stated purpose of the club and must be unanimously elected by his fellow club members. The emblem of the Hi-Y is a white cross in the center of a red triangle surrounded by a blue triangle. The Hi-Y Club had it,s beginning in Buffalo, New York in 1869. The first high school club was formed at Chapman, Kansas in a country high school in 1889. Arthur N. Cotton organized the first Pennsylvania group at Chester in 1912. The term Hi-Y was adopted as the name of the club in 1913. The Tri-Hi-Y club, organized in German Township in 1939, is a companion organization of the Hi-Y. Together the clubs undertake projects and drives. This year they were the co-sponsors of the Easter assembly program. Meeting every lirst and third Monday during the Activity period, this club had a very successful year in its effort to upbuild our school. Among its achieve- ments was the project of taking care of the bulletin boards in the main hall. Then too, the organization cooperated with the Hi-Y in a Clothing Drive or the Salva- tion Army. Since its introduction into our school, the Tri-Hi-Y has continued to function actively. Last year two girls were sent to Camp Buddy, a Tri-Hi-Y camp. Each year a Candlelight Induction service is held, to which the parents are invited. Having full responsibilities of the sport section was Matthew Laginja which covering all the exciting sport news in which our school participated. High School, but the B. Sheets Science Club was begun last year under the direction of Mr. Lloyd Wright and has become one of the most prominent clubs in German Twp. High School. The club was named for Mr. B. Sheetz-long time principal and science head at German Twp. High School. The membership consists of students especially interested in scientific fields. The purpose of the organization is to further the interests of science in our school, assist the chemistry and phySlC students, and to instruct ln photography. Among the many other activities of the club, last year was a trip to Pitts- burgh. An afternoon was spent at the Buhl Planetarium Where a lecture entitled Plastic and Synthetic Resinsn was enjoyed. In the evening We attended the musical production, The Student Prince at the Nixon Theatre. The club is plan- ning an activity of this kind for this year. Calvin Fleming and under his leadership the club had a worthy beginning. Then, in 1942, Mr. Lloyd A. Wright became our sponsor. Since then the club has grown to date to be one of the largest and most popular organizations in our school. The dark-room is used daily by the students interested in photography. Starting with simple Contact prints, beginners soon learn to make enlargements and photo copies. Members ofthe Science Club are known as dark room assistants, and it is their duty to assist and instruct the new members of the club to use the dark room equipment and to teach them fundamentals in taking pictures and also developing them. At the beginning of the year a dehnite schedule is arranged for each member with a senior member present to see that an adequate supply of hypo, developer, and other needed materials are on hand and also to lend a helping hand when it is needed. All of the snapshots and many of the group pictures in our yearbook, the 'KLaureola,' and school paper, the German Hi News are taken, developed, and printed by members of our club. Our group consisted of Ellen Maher, Clarinda Erminio, Eleanor Petts, Jean Milligan, Agnes Upole, Elsie Zubovich. Graduating this year is Ellen Maher. Our pep meetings were a special event of the day. Yells were practiced and also the singing of our school songs. Talks by our principal, Mr. Gault, also those of Mrs. Gallagher, Mr. Wright, Mr. Savanick and a few others added spice to our meetings. The Hall Patrol of German Twp. High School which is sponsored by Mr. William Kasovich has as its chief aim to make ours the most orderly school in Fayette County. The members of our patrol are chosen from all four classes. In their selection the following qualities play an important part: character, leadership, ability to decide quickly and correctly, neatness, and above all good grades. The members of the patrol are at their designated posts at a specific time ready to assume the following duties: regulating hall traffic, operating light switches, class bells, and in general keeping order throughout the building. In order for the patrol to continue its very efficient work, the senior class- men members of the patrol in the last three months of their last year in school, work hard to train the underclassmen patrolmen to carry on the work, making sure they understand the rules and aims of the club. For the splendid work and services rendered by members of our club, a gold pin is awarded to each senior before graduation time. The senior members are look- ing forward to receiving this pin. High School Band. Other members of our group are Rose Kromer, Betty McGin- nis, Helen Smith, Irene Hernansky and Agnes Raubaugh. We are sorry that two of our best majorettes, Rose Kromer and Betty McGinnis, senior members, will not be with us next year. We wish to congratulate them on their splendid work. The remaining quartet plus some new recruits will carry on with the band under the direction of Mr. William Cramer. This year we performed with the band at all the home football games and local parades. We also went to Kiski which was the biggest event of the year. We led the band in all formations such as the wheel, question mark, revolving ring and the letters representing each school. Mrs. Gal- lagher was the faculty advisor to the majorettes and cooperated with the girls in working out drills. James Townshend, our head major also deserves credit for his ine work in leading the band. The majorettes fell very proud to lead such a fine band which has become widely known by its wonderful work. In every contest our opponents were given a scare before the Hnal whistle of the game. One of the hardest games to lose was Trinity in which they came from behind in the final period to overcome a 12-0 lead by the Uhlans with a 13-12 victory. Other heartbreakers were losing to Redstoneby a touchdown in the final seconds of play and dropping a hard fought game to Con- nellsville with the final score 6-2. The credit for the endless fighting formidable Uhlans is due to Coach Rozzi and his two assistants Lou Hanna and Jack Hart.
