The l 46 if elm Down underground there are networks of streets-main highways, side streets, cross streets, and back alleys-arranged much like the plan of a town and frequently extei 'ng through an area of several square miles. Obviously these are not fcgdential. They are passage-ways of mines from which coal, the miner- al wealth of our section of the earth, is removed. Coal and iron are the twin sisters that have made the iron and steel industry great. Coal is abundant near Pittsburgh and helps to explain why that city is the worldls leading center of iron and steel manufacture and sometimes called the eapital of steeldom. Coal is not only plentiful in this territory but much of it is the best quality for making good metallurgical coke, which is indispensable in pro- ducing high quality pig iron. Coking coal is obtained in the Connellsville region which lies 30 to 45 miles south and southeast of Pittsburgh, from what is known as the Pittsburgh', or 'KConnellsville,l seam. VVe folks of German Township live in the center of the newer Connellsville region and the very recently opened coal fields of Greene County known as the Klondike.l, GERMA TOW HIP HIGH SCHOOL 2
