Because of the war the youth of German Township and all America scans horizons broader than we ever knew. The fine new world for which we are all hoping and planning will be run by our returning heroes and the boys and girls who sit behind our school desks today. How they and their country will fare depends upon the knowledge and ability they are able to acquire and the leadership they have a chance to develop. They need the very best that we can give them. They have much to learn and such a short time in which to do it. -9- ,M if Um As a pile of lumber, nails and paint is not a house, so just a collection of people and books is not a school. There must be activities, associa- tions, common spirit and interests, mutual confi- dence, respect for others' individuality, neighbor- ing, and sharing the common lot. There must be work, play, sociability, happiness, and sorrow. One has only to glance back in memory over this school year to know that our school has been a habitation with a personality for we have shared together, worked together and enjoyed happy times to- gether. Again the war has taken its toll with changes in instructors, courses, and student personnel. Many have gone with their parents to industrial areas and we have felt their loss. Too many, un- fortunately, have found the lure of their earning power too great and have left school to work. These, we wish-we might have encouraged to stay with us. A few, taking advantage of the accele- rated college programs, have left vacant places in our ranks. But in true army style someone has stepped into each place and our school army has marched onward, Too often during the year we have had to see books turned in, courses unfinished and our boys step forth manfully into another life -answering Duty's call to wherever or whatever the future miaht demand. This we watched with regret and saddened spirits but with courage and hearts full of admiration for them. ln contrast to this feelina of loss has been the joy at seeing and visiting with those who have returned from war areas, no lonaer boys but serious men eager to know what we have been doing at school. We have not always dared give wav to our disheartened soirits, so some social activities have gone on. What student has not enjoyed the noon- time volley ball games, the dances, the plavs, and the various club meetings? Here we developed a spirit of aood will and friendship, an important phase of school life. Then, too, the class parties so successful this year have been well attended and thoroughly enjoyed leavina pleasant memories for all. Who would or could forget the l-lula dancers of the senior party, the crowning of the queen at the junior party, the wedding of the sophomores, or the versatile entertainers of the freshman party? The cooperation and fellowship exhibited in prepa- ration for these social affairs will be remembered long. -.101 School We may not have won laurels in our sports but our hats are off to a grand group of sportsmen and their coach. One cannot always be a win- ner but one can always be a man. After every contest we were complimented for our good sports- manship. One of our football players received O place on the all-county team and three were given honorable mention. Outstanding among service groups this year were the German High News group, the Laureola staff, the Hall Patrol boys, the Photography Club, Tri-Hi-Y, Hi-Y, the Band, Orchestra and Choral Groups. Each group has with willingness and re- sponsibility served well in its own capacity. X'Ve listened with pleasure to the music furnished by the different music groups at the football games, basketball games, the assemblies, and plays. They have done a grand job. Every day in the halls we have seen order maintained by efficient corps of patrolmen. In evidence back-stage, preparing the news or wrapping papers for mailing to our service men you might have found an active group of the news staff. You need only to glance at this book to be assured that an untiring, competent group has been busy preparing this school annual. We have missed throughout the year our movies. The army has proved that this type of visual education is most essential to effective teaching and learning. Too often we have thought of moving pictures as merely entertainment ancl riot as a successful teaching tool. Science classes have felt the loss of this type of instruction this year. War conditions prevented our obtaining a new projector but we hope soon to be able to benefit again by this type of instruction. Boys in school this year, knowing that they were facing induction, have studied with keen in- terest aviation mathematics and courses in pre- flight aeronautics. So you see we have worked, planned, and played together, making this an altogether suc- cessful school year-one which we hope has left its mark on each student. This true community spirit in our school, this unified living has resulted, we believe, in a better outlook on life, deeper social roots, more unified personalities, and a higher culture. lt is like an orchestra, in which each member plays his own part, often improvising a little, but with an overall harmonious result. ..11.. MR. J. CARMAN NEWCOMER Juniata College Penn State College University of Pittsburgh V' l i i l DR. J. H. SANGSTON' President I LAWRENCE E. McGEE Vice President . . fmudlaemenrimla ifubiagalln, 1351 a ' all Good schools should ultimately 'pay off' in terms of fuller and more secure employment, in lower divorce rates, lower death rates, better civic government, abundance of leaders in every field, a high rate of artistic activity, a decline in the number of nervous disorders and jail membership, and a decent set of ideals which will help us get our feet out of the trough more frequently. The above quotation is so timely and so fit- tingly applicable to the education of youth that it should hang from the portals of every school room, and find a place on the desk of every school ad- ministrator as a constant reminder of the purpose for which a school exists. To you who have completed your training within our halls and have gone from our midst, may it cause you to pause in retrospect and evalu- ate the service our school has rendered, and may it be a stimulation for further endeavor. To you who are still under our influence may it be an inspiration to greater effort and enable you to grasp more fully the significance of educational opportunity. J. CARMAN NEWCOMER. J. We here at German Township High School discussed the pub- lication of our Laureola and decided that even though we would find difficulties in completing our work we would attempt it and do the best work possible. lt might be of interest to you, Dear Readers, to know that the paper was put aside for this edi- tion of the Laureola last school year and that this cover was selected and put aside during the first month of school this year. You can readily see that the Faculty advisor, Lloyd Wright, left no stone unturned in his efforts to make this one of the best annuals to be presented this year. As you leaf through it you will find it to be a well arranged resume of classes, Faculty, Curricu- lum and extra-curricular activities for this i944- 45 school year. Happy browsing, J. A. Noi every man can get into this field of photography. My Motion Picture Li- cense and my darkroom work were the biggest help. Keep up the good Work and tell the members of the Photog- raphy Club to get all they can from it. It doesn't seem like much to enter a dark room and develop films and pic- tures but some day it might be invalu- able to them. Hovv's everything at school? How's the Laureola coming along? Wish I were back helping on it. I wish you and your staff all the luck in the world in making a big success of this years book. I'll want one When itis finished. 1 -3 2- Q' 3 w HM efadfi Jlwf For the class of '45, our first day of High School was one that will long be remem- bered. How could we, 397 strong, ever forget those green and bewildered little Freshies who entered through the portals of our beloved institution that gray morning of Septem- ber 2, l94l? Looking like so many kid brothers and sisters who had been experimenting with big sisters' lipsticks, we had set out to find that seemingly never to be found sea of four years, only to suddenly find ourselves now at the end of our journey. Most of our first year was spent in quietly observing and filing away for future use the tactics of the so-called upperclassmen. The results of our first class election were as follows: President Ann Markotan, Vice President, Phyllis Sharpnack, Secretary, Lois Stilwell. Our class was commendably represented in many of the various school activities, and our Freshman party, held in the gym, was highly successful. At iastll No longer were we the lowly freshmen, but the Wise Guys. lt was nice, in a fiendish sort of way, to be able to call to a passing Freshie, Wrong stairsl Those who served as officers during our Sophomore year were: President, Lois Stil- well, Vice President, Ann Markotan, Secretary, Ed Bilpuch. 'The fall of '43 and once more our ever-diminishing group called cheery greetings to each other through the halls of G. T. H. S. The new full time schedule met with the ap- proval of the majority, as it afforded time for noon sports, and also time to meet and gossip with our friends. Highlights of this year were the Class Play and Class Party under the able lead- ership of the Class Officers of our Junior year: President, Joe Gurtis, Vice President, Mike Bokach, Secretary, Lois Stilwell, Treasurer, Mike Bozick. The last lap of the journey, but something is wrong. lt took but a short time to discover what it was. We were the big shots now, there wasn't anyone else to tell us what to do. And something else, where is everybody? How our class had suffered from the call of the services and the war factory. Our Senior Class Officers are: President, Mike Bokach, Vice President, Jack Smodic, Secretary, Cecelia Manchas, Treasurer, Mike Bozick. And so ends four of the happiest and possibly the most important years of our lives. With a parting backward glance, we turn our eyes to the future and begin our search for new worlds to conquer. A man being pushed off the roof of a penthouse, a gun found in a room of the same penthouse, a burnt body found in a crashed plane. All this led to the trial of Karen Andre for her life, which was the theme of the Senior Class Play, The Night of January l6th. The scene is a courtroom where it is believed that Bjorn Faulkner, Sweden's great financier, was the disfigured mass found at the foot of the Faulkner Building. Mr. Stevens, Miss Andre's attorney, claimed it was suicide and the District Attorney claimed it was murder. As different witnesses are called to the stand, we are led to believe that Bjorn Faulkner had faked this suicide and had run away to South America and was still alive -that the body found greatly mangled was not Bjorn Faulkner, but Lefty O'Toole, a night club owner. We have this impression until Larry Reagen, a gangster who helped with the fake suicide, says he has reason to believe that Faulkner is really dead, and tells of the burnt body in the crashed plane. With such facts the jury who had been recruited from the audience retired to the jury room to decide the fate of Karen Andre. Was she guilty or not guilty? This re- mained for the jury to decide. With character acting done by some of the witnesses and the unusual theme, the play was very amusing and proved to be suc:essful. lst Row: District Attorney Flint, Charles Wilson, Karen Andre lalternatel, Dorothy Reckner, Karen Andre, Ann Markotan, Defense Attorney Stevens, Joe Glagola. 2nd Row: Magda Svenson, Elaine Clearage, Roberta Van Rensler, Roberta Beal, Judge Heath, Mike Bokachi Elmer Sweeny, Joe Gurtis, Mrs. Piccolominio, Dorothy Petroff. 3rd Row: Dr. Kirkland, Stephan Kovach, Nancy Lee Faulkner talternotel, Antoinette Susa, Joe Glagola and Charles Wilson, Nancy Lee Faulkner, Helen Hovanec, Larry Reagen, Robert Tercala. 4th Row: Magda Svenson talternatel, Alma Podesta, John Graham Whitfield, William Kurnot, Clerk of Courts, Eugene Roman, Bailiff, James Messenger, Homer Van Fleet, Mike Bozick, Siguard Janauizt, Edward Michalik, Jane Chandler, Helyn Adams. ' Elem .-Jim' ln the fall of '42, an uncertain group of youngsters entered German Township l-ligh School as Freshmen, They were to be the seniors of '46, Theirs was the task of adjusting themselves to new surroundings and ideas. But everyone will have to admit that they weren't long in getting the swing of things. Our officers were: President, Elsie DePalma, Vice President, Patty Ball, and Secretary, Gertrude Suske. As Sophomores, we were the first class ever to order and receive our class rings. We also had a combined party with the Freshmen, sponsored by the Tri-Hi-Y. The class officers were: President, Dolores Richardson, Vice President, Anna Kovach, Secretary, Elsie DePalma, and Treasurer, William Spurshansky. At last we are upperclassmen, we have worked two years to become Juniors. Our class has decreased greatly since we entered as Freshmen. We looked forward to having a Junior Class Play during our Freshman and Sophomore years. Now the time had come. We also held a very enjoyable party on February l, l945. Those chosen to be our class officers for this year were: President, Richard Scar- ton, Vice President, Dolores Richardson, Secretary, Helen Kormank, Treasurer, John l-lrivnak. Members of our class are active in sports and are well represented in the many ton, Vice President, Dolores Richardson, Successful in all our class undertakings which is due to the cooperation between a splendid faculty and conscientious officers and the enthusiasm exhibitd by the students themselves. 139, 0-W1 fqma flffalea T111' 511111111 11112 1111112 lfll' 111131, is f161'111ll1I 'l'1111111s111p High, .-11111 f111'111111111' 11111 1'1'.s'1. 11174 flag 5111111 IllZl'1l3'.Y 1131. 1 'V1 1l g'11a1'1l 11121' 1f11'1l111'111 11112ll, 111111 11111112 1111131 1111111 1111121111 Of 121111111 1lI111111 .s1 11111111111 11111, lllf' 13111111 111111 lf1'f1. 11-1111111111131-1.111111 Oh! 13111111 111111 lf1'11 11'1' l11111' 1,137 fair, 1.1111 1111115 14 11'1111.s'111'1' 111111 1'111'11 31111 111111 Il1lllQ'lllI'1' .S'll1'TI'1l 1111l1l.s'. Our 295 Freshmen entered High School to start its history, They chose as their class representatives: President, Rudy Dulik, Vice President, Beverly Franks, Secretary, Elizabeth Lotsko, Treasurer, Ru- dolph Matyas. The main event of the year was o Freshman-Sophomore party, talked of long after, and remembered forever. Each section of Freshmen also was represented in an assembly. Although we look with pleasure on our year as Freshmen, our Sophomore year was more memorable, Perhaps we felt ourselves advancing and realized that we were really a part of our school. With Eleanor Gurick as President, Gertrude Christobek as Vice President, Louise Yakovac as Secretary, and Mary Spenik as Treasurer, we had very capable officers. Several dances were held in activity period, exclusively for Sophomores. Then, on February 22, came the climax of the year, the Sophomore Party. There we saw many classmates and their guests, and all had a wonderful time. The main event of the evening was a mock wedding. Assemblies were given by each Sophomore home room and both boys and girls participated in basketball and volley ball games. Our yeor as Sopho- mores will never be forgotten. On September Sth the doors of our Alma Mater were opened to 277 bright-faced eager Freshmen. Behind these doors we Freshmen look ahead into the future to three more successful and happy years. We met new friends and learned new things about life, but we are still eager to open the cover of new books and discover what the contents are. We wish to join in the activities that help to make our school better, and try out new ex- periments. When we graduate we will be more educated and ready to face the hardships of life after completing four years in high school, 1 1 Gerald Raubaugh was elected the president of the Freshman Class. Gerry is a studious boy and interested in sports, especially football. He has made the second team on the football team and promises to become a star football player in the future. Tony DeFrank was elected Vice President and Jean l-lllavich, the Secretary of our class. The officers have fully cooperated in all the Freshman and other school activities. The main event of our Freshman year was the Freshman Party. lt was a big suc- cess with nearly all members in attendance. We had a wonderful time and our Fresh- man Party will always be remembered. These 30 journalists have worked this year to improve every phase ot i the newspaper. l l The publication of the first four izisues this term were supervised by Mr. Thomas l Hartley, who had served as faculty adviser for three previous years. Upon his departure, the position was accepted by Mr. Frank Hrivnak, who incorporated several new ideas in l y the paper. The faculty business manager is Miss Ruth Wood. i The whole staff contributed to the success of the publication, but a few members ' in special departments merit particular mention. The paper was edited this year by l Thelma Hobaugh and Ruth Flemming. The sports page was under the direction of Mike I Bozick, Jack Smodic, Mike Bokach, and Joe Gurtis. Those responsible for advertisements 5 were Awilda Johnson, Joseph Owens, and Eleanor Santella. Eleanor was also the staff typist. Jane Kennison wrote the letter to Dearest Mimi and Dorothy Petroff to Dear G. l. Joe. l The German Hi News kept the students informed about all student activities and special events at G. T. H. S., to former students in the armed forces it served as a tie with familiar places and people associated with their school years. This year more than ZOO copies were sent to men in service. We feel that the newspaper this year was really a student publication, as much l faculty work as possible having been eliminated. We hope that we have established a standard that will be maintained in the future. f lqff XQTJ-2' Y' ji l i l .1-, 4 , v.. . , ' - awww? ' r-. ' ' . - -.318-85-kitkx . , , fe - '65-:vw , v- . Since the membership of the club had decreased with the graduaton of many of its members last year, we were able to receive twenty-five new girls into our organization. With the purpose, To create, maintain and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character, the members have carried out the theme of the club. Always, the objectve of To seek, to find, to share, was foremost in the minds of these girls who represent the Young Women's Christian Association in our High School. The Tri-Hi-Y Club, organized in German Township in l939, is the companion organization to the l-li-Y Club. The Tri in the name is sig- nificant of trios of important factors around which the club is built. The club stands for all-around development of its members in Spirit, Mind and Body, and it serves the three main Training Agencies of the l-lome, Church and School. Under the guidance ot Mr. Lloyd Wright, our spon- sor, and the capable assistance of the senior members, much excellent work was accomplished. The dark room was used daily by students interested in photography. Starting with simple Contact prints, beginners soon were making enlarge- ments and photo copies. Students who belonged to the club last year were known as senior members. lt was their duty to act as assistants to the sponsor and instruct the new members in the use of the dark room equip- ment and teach them fundamentals in taking and developing pictures. A definite schedule was arranged for each member with a senior member present to see that an adequate supply of developer, hypo, and other needed materials, were on hand, also to lend a guiding hand when needed. Most of the snapshots and many of the group pictures used in this book were taken, developed, and printed by members of our club. Senior members are: Charles Wilson, Ed Poole, Mildred Glumsic, Gladys Hiles, Elaine Clearage, Ann Markotan, Joe Kovach, Ruth Cowell, Ruth E. Flemming, and Thelma Ho- baugh, Junior members are: Philip Pope, Eugene Roman, Joe Glagola, Irene Sholtis, Margaret Daruda, Elsie DePalma, Robert Tercala, Ed Michalik, Patricia Reese, William Danko, Thomas Kasenic, Edith Lee, Jack Baker, Robert Franks, Frank Deli, Frank Kozel, Florian Holva, Dolores Richardson, Jane Kennison, J. A great deal of enthusiasm developed through the pupils by means of editorials in the school paper and a timely article which appeared in the Laureola, written by Miss Mary V. Hague lthen a student in German Township High School.l The manual training department had the duty of partitioning a section of the so-called study hall for the new l'b . Th e ' ' ' ' i rary ere were several sets of encyclopedias, reference editions, his- tories, biographies and last but not least many of the popular fiction books of th t t' a ime. Boys and girls soon found their favorites in St. Elmo, Graustark and The Gentleman from Indiana. A5 the years passed the enrollment in German Townshi Hi h ' d , 'p g increase and the library space had to be given over to class rooms and the library books scattered to class rooms, the principal's and superintendent's offices. About l936 the library was revised under the sponsorship of Mrs Lillian McCann Many new books were ordered and once again pupils made their way tothe room at the head of the stairs, second floor, to the left. Each year has brought a new supply of reading and reference material as well as a good number of up-to-date magazines. Pupils continued to have their popular favorites as The Robe, The Hero of Vincennes and Kit Carson. There has been no material reward or merit given the librarians for the faithful service rendered by them. The girls consider the fact that they were chosen to serve as librarians a great honor, as well as a benefit. The librarians for l9-44-45 are Gladys H'l A ' ' ies, nna Mae Lytle, Ruth Kessler, Lois Faye Byers, Josephine Panzera, Ann Racic, Roberta Beal, Irene Solarcheck, Betty Rayner, Betty Yenco, Edith Lee Elizabeth Alb .i I on I Kathryn Daugherty, and Margaret Daruda. ln the years to come, may the library grow and school authorities ever feel the need for more and better reading material. -my awww A sfzmw s l igdsm Og, mance ,gg-,ri '4 TEX , 9 C ,s v f u 4 f' , '-.. This group has done a splendid job and deserve much credit for their fine work. Through their un- tiring effort, the science equipment was kept in good condition and the chemistry laboratory was always in a clean and tidy condition. A place must be reserved in our book of memories for the High School Band. This popular organization, with its members in snappy red uniforms, enlivens football games, basketball games, parades, and pep meetings. The students and faculty are justly proud of the band. Due to the war, the band attended only the games held at home, for it was impossible to obtain transportation for the entire band. Several of the most talented members have entered the armed forces, and others plan to leave soon. These changes have naturally affected those who are responsible for taking their places, but they have accepted this re- sponsibility and are progressing nicely. Each member feels it is his duty to play his best, therefore, the result is a harmonious collection of pieces that please those within hear- ing. Much of the success of the band is due to our able music leader, Mr. Frank Wright, Striving to make a better musical department, Mr. Wright is developing a junior band, whose members will advance to take the places of those graduating. l-le also is instructing grade school pupils in order to have them already eligible for membership in the band when they enter l-ligh School. His patient efforts have greatly improved the band. fl' Seemd '70 Me 7fne WMM lveecfd lwwiic Q 4 -v -11. 'I 0 C fi L J i O0 0 Ht: X l 0 O . Ql j J 5' ff! 4 'l ,. l5'. N 01,0 x I QW 1 t ' 'Q' T: -iff. Coach Thomas Ellwood aaalfdall As the new school term rolled around again, the beginning of a new football season came into the highlight at German Township. Under the training of Coaches Thomas Pop Ellwood and Lou Jesso, our team started off very well as they defeated the strong Carmichaels eleven in a very exciting nip and tuck game. With the confidence of a win, we were disappointed when the strong Brownsville aggregation gave us a sound beating. Several of our star players were injured in this game which proved costly in the next game with Trinity. With a patched up team our Uhlans jour- neyed to Johnstown and were again turned back for their third straight defeat. Then the Uhlans halted the losing streak when they defeated Georges l9 to O. ln our next game, South Union took a close one by being able to go ahead and hold until the final whistle. The Uhlans then sprung a surprise in the next two games when they showed surprising strength against two lead?ng county teams, Redstone and Connellsville. Here our boys showed they could play football as they were leading in both contests at the half- way mark. Then in the final game with Masontcwn we swallowed the bitter pill of defeat handed us by their spirited team. Although the Uhlans were turned back time and time again, they had become one of the best passing teams in the county, and the boys showed sportsmanship and ability of the gridiron and gained the recogni- tion of being one of the scrappiest elevens in the county. Congratulations to Mr. Ellwood, Mr. Jesso and the Uhlans. Zlwzfdall Schedule - 'I-:-zv:-14 .-1.:-:-:- Q-Qsxaff-.-1:1f.L'.M,..,,M , .:,,,.::,.,,,.. fgg i..
