CLASS HISTORY 4 The portals of G.H.S. opened to 84 green freshmen in the year -1947. when the class of 1951 began their four memorable years of high school. In that year we elected Ronald Brown as President: Marilyn Schlothauer as Vice President, J. R. Rogers as Secretary, and Helen Hashiba as Treasurer. To the student council. we elected Don McCosh. Jerry Barton. Elwin Olson, Phyllis Roland. For our class sponsors that year we chose Mrs. Evelyn Snyder and Mr. ,lim Boyce. Our class party, a masquerade affair. was highly successful. In the fall of 1948. we returned to that grand institution called learning and. voted for our President. J. R. Rogers. Our other officers were Bob Wilkie. Vice Presidentg Arthur Carretson, Secretary, Arne Landsberg, Treasurer. Mickey Reavis, Phyllis Roland, Jackie Ross. and Donna Thomas were chosen to represent us 'ln student council. Our class sponsors that year were Mr. .lim Bowers and Miss Anna Meyer. As we began our junior year in the fall of 194-9, we entered upon a whirl of activities. Our .lunior Class Play, Comin' 'Round the Mountain. was a great hit. With the funds received from the play we began our plans for the .Iunior-Senior Prom. Our theme was Dreamers Holidayu and it was one to be proud of. Our leaders for that year were J. R. Rogers, President, Beverly Daily, Vice Presidentg Arne Landsberg. Secretaryg and Jane Morrison. Treasurer. Our student council representatives were Phyllis Roland. Bob Wilkie, Elwin Olson, and Jerry Barton. Our sponsors were Miss Shirley Brisco and Mr. Bill Taylor. We embarked upon our final year with the dignity and sophistication of seniors. As we began our year, we again elected .I. R. Rogers as our class President. Elwin Olson was elected Vice Presidentg Arne Landsberg. Treasurerg and Donn Conn was elected Treasurer. The seniors were well represented in student council, with Mickey Reavis as President, Bob Wilkie. Vice President, Donna Thomas as Secretary. On the Activity Board were Jerry Barton. Chairman., and Donna Thomas and J. R. Rogers. Other members of the council were Pat Myers, Phyllis Roland, Don McCosh, Rich Hall, Rex Coppom and Elwin Olson. Mrs. ,lean Reeder and Mr. Bill Taylor were our class sponsors and their guidance and help through our last year will always be remembered. Our Senior Class Play. One Mad Night, was a comedy which we enjoyed putting on. On our Senior Sneak Day, we sneaked away to Denver for a thoroughly good time. Then there was the Senior Dinner at Bigger's Dinner Bell. That was memorable night with good food, dancing. and a lot of laughs. The breakfast and prom put on for us by the junior class high-lighted our final year in school. To our teachers. sponsors. and those members of the faculty who were always willing to sacrifice their time and effort to help us. we offer our sincere appreciation for making our class history such a pleasant one. fiff ,... r X - my I ,K Z 7 :,.::: I .:.L ..f:V.. 1 3: , , ii 3 X Dale Achziger Dick Amen Delores Bort Bill Campbell Marvin Carmody C o K B m P y t U i l Q - T l f . By winning the Class B Championship they earned a trip to Lincoln for the State Tournament. Cering floored an excellent all-round team in the never faltering accuracy and rebounding of Don lVlcCosh, big center, in a fiery guard, Jerry Barton, who displayed brilliant general- ship on the floor in his playmakingg in Melvin Carmody, forward, whose set shots and monkey-like rebounds won many a game, in guard Jack Woodward,s long set shots from mid court, and his deceptive ball handling, in Bill Campbell, forward, whose dead-eye set shots and tip-ins proved fatal to many opponents. We had many very capable reserves who took over and at times pulled the game out of the fire when the going was rough. Gering won 17 games and lost 4 games, thus creating the greatest chapter in the history of Gering High Basketball teams. R ex Coppom Diary of a Band Member -1950-51 Dear Diary, Sept. 4--This morning at 7:4-5 we began practic- ing. Our instruments and we are both rusty from summer vacation. Sept. 6-We wore our new grey and white uni- forms.which came last June, to the County Fair on Gering's Day. Sept. 22-We began our season of marching dur- ing the half of five home football games and special drills and formations. Sept. 30-This morning at four we left for Boulder in two chartered busses. We attended Colorado University's All-State Band Day and placed third in marching out of forty-three other bands. We saw a football game and then took part in the massed band at half-time. Oct.-We're still having marching practice for the half-time performances. Nov.-Now that football season is over we've started playing concert pieces. Dec.-Basketball began and as always we supported the team with peppy marches and our school song. Feb. 14P-We went to Torrington to exchange Concerts. This was the eighth year we had traded Concerts with them. Feb. 16--At half-time we discovered what The Thing was. All evening long weplayed and fin- ally the big moment came. Out of a big black crate with a large black question mark on its side came the words- We're Gunning to be N.P.V. Champs? Feb. 19-The Annual Spring Concert was pre- sented in the high school auditorium. Our per- formance showed we had improved greatly since September and proved that our daily practices had been worthwhile. March 29-We had our band banquet in the Parish Hall which climaxed a day of preparation for 'the Clinic. March 30--Leo Moody was guest conductor at the N.P.V. Clinic held here. Over 230 musicians from six towns in the valley took part. April 13-The District Music Contest was held at Chadron. Several solos and ensembles were sent down and they received above average ratings. April 23-Beginning, second, and our high school band presented their massed band concert to- night. Mr. Childs has really worked hard this past year to improve the bands and our perform- ance showed our improvement. May 1-We took part in the first Loyalty Day Parade with the Scottsbluff band. May 7--We took a trip down to Melbeta, Bayard, and McGrew to present concerts to the schools. Bayard is going to come up here and play later. May 20-We played at Baccalaureate tonight. May 21-Tonight we played 'for Commencement. This year we lost eleven fine musicians in the graduating class. May 24-We went to Gentry's Ranch for our pic- nic. Schoolis over now and so is band. It's really been swell being a member of such a swell or- ganization. We've learned to cooperate and al- though its been lots of work it's also been lots of fun. , 1 .N ffm B?wmwf Fc E L.. fn .- 'L .- I ut .-I 5 E L.. J? kv 5. 11 .-1 .
