Competitive sports play a big part in adding excitement to the school year along with developing good sportsmanship and a willingness to co- operate between both those competing and those watching. Gering High School started their football season with a new coach, L. J. Fitzgibbon, who taught the team many new tactics. The high light of the season was winning the first game played on the new Memorial Field by defeating a favored Chadron team l2 to 7. Although they did not have a very successful season, the spirit of G. H. S. could never be beaten. Beginning the basketball season with victories, the Bulldogs won l5 games and lost only to Scottsbluff, Mitchell and Crete. Gering, in the Class B Tournament, played four games, defeating Mitchell for the Championship. The Bulldogs were awarded the trophy and a trip to Lincoln to represent the Panhandle B Teams at the State Tournament. lt was a very successful season and the town was proud of the team.
