Places in all these organizations are determined on a competitive basis, and chair positions within the sections of the band and orchestra are determined by challenges. Besides these larger organizations, the instrumental music department offers beginning classes in band and string instruments. Members of band and orchestra are encouraged to participate in chamber music ensembles such as the brass quartet, clarinet quartet and string quartet. Various first chair men in band and orchestra are encour- aged to maintain a repertoire of solos for their respective instruments. The Second Band serves as a training school for the Concert Band and offers a musical opportunity to those who cannot achieve the standing of the Concert Band. The Concert Band is composed of selected musicians, organized for the purpose of studying and performing the higher types of music. In addition to numerous appearances in school assemblies, for various civic occasion, parades, basketball games, the Concert Band play a series of concerts for the public each year. The high school instrumental music department is building toward varied and rather complete school-owned instrumental equipment, Besides owning a representative number of the more expensive and unusual instru- ments, the department lends instruments for a limited length of time to those wishing to take up music for the first time. The band was equipped with full uniforms for the first time this year through the initiative and assistance of the lx Q
