Rubber Legs! The Junior year is perhaps the busiest of the high school years, but also one of the most rewarding. Students have reached the upperclassman stage and the end seems near. The year goes quickly because there is so much to do. A Junior Play must be produced and at Home- coming time Juniors are in charge of the Royalty Float and the Homecoming Dance. The class worked hard throughout the year to raise money for their largest activity - the Junior Prom. The year is finished when they have honored the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Banquet and they then are able to look forward to their Senior Year. 20 The Jet Set SOPHOMORES Margaret Dostal Joe Owen Sandra Magnuson Donna Woodburn Rick Zanto Sherry Warehime Peggy Tadej Kim Boutilier Jack Patterson GeGe Owen Monica Stoos Secretary-Treasurer Clinton Fairbanks Mark Atchison Amie Owen Student Council Maureen Joyce Dennis Carlson Patty Goldhahn f 4 i m Dorothy Bronec Karen Smith Allan Goldhahn Sarah Davis SOPHOMORE CANDIDS SPONSOR - Mr. Lewis REPRESENTATIVE - Amie Owen SECRETARY - Monica Stoos VICE PRESIDENT - Rocque Fairbanks PRESIDENT - Richard Owen Working on the Homecoming Float Will she kiss you again? The Sophomore year was a relatively easy one. The members had survived their Freshman year, and High School didn't seem so rough after all. The only scheduled activities for the year are Painting the G and preparing a Homecoming float. This year the Sophomores kept themselves busy by raising money for their many activities during the Junior Year. To do this, they sold light bulbs and sponsored bake sales and car washes. 24 Sophomores laugh a lot - there's not much else to do FRESHMEN Mike Rand President David Spurgeon Vice President i Paul Trevethick Kathy Buck Nina Scribner Rose Smootz Janice Meyer Lori. The only activities of this year's class were painting the G, producing a float for Homecoming, and entering a booth in the Scarborough Fair which was organized by the Seniors. The class enjoyed their year, and will look forward to next year, when they are no longer at the bottom of the pile . The Tigers started the season at the Stanford Invitational Tournament during Thanksgiving. They gained momentum throughout the year, beating every team in the district except the controversial Stanford Wolves. The Tigers were supported in their effort by the community and the school alike. Whether it was at home or away, the gym was always filled with people who had gathered to watch the Tigers in action. They admired our team's united effort and unselfishness in making the best team possible. Coach Dockstader and his team fought hard throughout the year in a district where the teams were so closely matched that it drew statewide attention. We were proud of our team's ability to do so well in this district. The Varsity Cheerleaders worked hard throughout the year. In addition to cheering at games, they led the Snake Dance at Homecoming and organized Spirit Week during Tournament. V. basketball season was a victorious one. The Tigers showed good spirit and effort. Working as a unit each individual showed the spirit and attitude needed to make a team. The Junior Varsity traveled with the Varsity team to games, and for many J. V. players, this season was an initiation into the stiffer competition of Varsity basketball. These girls were elected in the late spring of 1970 to cheer for the Junior Varsity team. They worked throughout the year to support their team. The major goal of the Staff members this year was to preserve the memories of the school year 1970-71. Throughout the year, members of the Staff worked to complete the Annual. Early in the year, the yearbook theme and cover were chosen. The Staff then set to work- raising money, revising copy, typing, and preparing the layout. The 1971 Safari is the Memory-book for this year at Geraldine High School. The hard work of the photographers and other staff members who helped to preserve these memories is appreciated. It is a very high honor to be elected as a member of the Student Council, for this is the representative body for the students in school government. This year the Student Council fulfilled its responsibilities well. It got involved in school affairs and conducted its duties quite competently. This club, the youngest in High School, is a state wide organization with chapters in many schools. The purpose of M.U.N. is to acquaint interested students with the procedure and problems of the real United Nations. The M.U.N. Chapter in Geraldine was organized in the fall, and members worked throughout the year in preparation for the annual session held in Missoula. About mid-year, country assignments were received and the group was divided into the three countries which Geraldine was to represent, Lebanon, Finland, and Czechoslovakia. As the time neared for the trip, delegates were busy preparing resolutions for presentation to the General Assembly and acquainting themselves with the political and cultural backgrounds of their assigned country. They also had to study the rules of procedure which must be used at the session, just as they are used at the real United Nations. This Mock United Nations truly does help students understand the problems of the world as they struggle to solve them. It rained for the Victory March and the Bonfire on Friday night, but Homecoming day dawned clear, if a little windy. The day opened with the traditional Homecoming Parade, which was followed by the Homecoming game in the afternoon. The Tigers lost their Homecoming game, but they fought hard in their attempt to win. Even the maid (Barbara Nulf) and her birdwatching boyfriend (Bob Farmer) can't escape analysis. Wally, played by Mike Murphy, tries Laurie's recipe for increasing his brain power. Martha and Sid entertain Sid's business rival and his wife played by Doug Thompson and Debbie Frederick._________________________________________________________________ Laurie's boyfriend Mark (Dave Copp) keeps a wary eye on Laurie's Nutty mother (Bonnie Clark) Leann Buck came to the luncheon. Sid kicks up his heels a little. The family gives Laurie a lesson as Mark watches in amazement. In November, the Junior Class under the direction of Miss Lila Anderson presented a situation comedy entitled THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED. The play dealt with a middle- class family and the trials they face when their daughter Laurie comes home from college where she is majoring in pyschology. The family endures Laurie's analyzing (from which even the maid and her boyfriend aren't exempt) until after a disastrous luncheon at which she offends the town's leading ladies by describing their characters. The family then decides that the time has come to teach Laurie a lesson. Laurie comes home from a date with her special boyfriend, Mark, to find her parents, Sid and Martha, and her kid brother Wally putting on a show that would convince anyone that they were crazy. All ends well, however, as Laurie gives up amateur analysis and the family forgives her. 57 KING WARD G QUEEN PAT WINTER BALL JUNIOR PROM An Evening in Paris One of the many activities of the Junior Class this year was the presentation of the Junior-Senior Prom. After a great deal of hard work and united class effort, the °rom was ready. On May 1, the Prom was presented to the public and labeled a success. The focal point of the Prom was a ten foot high Eiffel Tower of blue and white. The Old Auditorium had been transformed into a Parisian scene, complete with sidewalk cafes and a flower garden. A lighted fountain at the front of the hall provided romantic lighting. The entire effect was one the Junior Class had good reason to be proud of--that of Paris under a night sky. KING RIC QUEEN PAT A time for Royalty Just before midnight, the students gathered for the Grand March which heralded the time for the royalty to be announced. At midnight, Eric Anderson and Pat Steinbacher were crowned Prom King and Queen. The Junior Prince and Princess were Tony Rand and Karen Meyer. Sophomore Prince and Princess were Richard Owen and Margaret Dostal, while Mike Rand and Lori Quigley represented the Freshman Class as Prince and Princess. On May 7 and 8, the Senior Class presented their Senior Play, REST ASSURED, to the public. The three act comedy, directed by Miss Lila Anderson, was considered a success. The basis of the play was a conflict between Mr. Morlock and Luigi Lanconi which developed over the proposed marriage of Morlock's daughter, Mary, and Luigi's son Joe. Morlock will not have his daughter marrying a pauper. The Morlock household, consisting also of Mrs. Morlock, the daughter Jessica, Mildred the Maid, and Miss Akers and George Plew, Morlock's secretary and attorney- is upset for the rest of the play when Luigi dies and he and assorted other ghosts return to haunt Morlock. Morlock dies from an overdose of pills and watches in horror as his family shows no sadness over his death. The play ends when Morlock is awakened by Mildred and finds that the entire fiasco was only a dream. 63 Even the ghost of Luigi's wife tries to persuade Mr. Morlock. HAAS ASSOCIATES Fort Benton, Montana PIONEER MERCANTILE SCOTT'S LUMBER SUPPLY Fort Benton, Montana Fort Benton, Montana Montana Now, LISTEN! Thirteen Seniors set off on May 17 for their last trip together. It was a time for memories. . . for laughter, for tears, for long walks on Last Chance Gulch, for forgotten suitcases, for stories and good times. On the first day the Seniors went to the Capitol and met Governor Forrest Anderson. The next day was spent climbing over the rocks in Lewis and Clark Caverns, and traveling to Ennis. The remaining days were filled as they visited Butte, toured Virginia City and Nevada City, and went through the Federal Reserve Bank in Helena, their last stop before heading home on Friday morning. PASTIME BAR 6 CAFE Fort Benton, Montana Underclassmen paint the G” Painting the G is one of the most traditional of all Geraldine High School activities. Every Spring, the members of the Freshman and Sophomore classes, laden with buckets and brooms, make their way up the hill to the G. Once there, they change the year number and give the rocks of the G a new coat of white wash. The day is usually finished off at the school with a water fight on the school lawn. You show 'em who's boss, Grant. Supervising? What ya got in the bucket, girls. Working hard or hardly working? Cut the clowning and get to work. MISSOURI RIVER LUMBER COMPANY Fort Benton, Montana Geraldine Students worked to improve their school town EARTH DAY Geraldine jumped on the Ecology bandwagon this spring when the Administration set aside an Earth Day for the school. The entire student body, under the supervision of the teachers and with the help of interested community members combed the town for junk which was then hauled by the truck- load to the city dump. The efforts of the students certainly improved the appearance of the town. NEW TRACK FIELD In the spring of this year, the Geraldine school and community combined to build a new track field. The farmers volunteered their trucks to haul material from Belt and many students worked during their Study Halls and after school to finish the project. We feel the new track field will be a great asset to our track teams. GERALDINE MOTOR COMPANY Geraldine GRADUATION: A LAST Well, Lets Go! Gift Exchanging On Graduation night the Seniors gathered in the Home-Economics room to don their caps and gowns of green and white. Most of the class had just come from a Graduation dinner at the Owen home, where they had been exchanging old stories and memories, as they did at the Dollar and Patterson parties. As the Seniors exchanged their gifts, some tears were shed, for the parting of friends is always sad. Many of the Seniors must have looked back over their twelve years in school as they stood in that room with the classmates whom they had known for so long, and then wondered what the future would bring. The gymnasium was filling, and eight o'clock drew near. The Seniors lined up in the hall, waiting for the strains of the Graduation March, played by Bonnie Clark, to lead them into the gymnasium for the last time as a class. Finally, a few minutes after eight, the first chords sounded and the Class of 1971 marched solemnly into the gymnasium and into the future. Isn't this exciting? The Last Mile TIME TOGETHER On May 25, 1971, 23 Seniors gathered with the community for Graduation exercises. The program was short as the Seniors had decided that they did not want a speaker, to replace the speaker, a poem was read and the Valedictorian and Salutatorian gave their speeches. Reverend Barnes, who had also participated in the Baccalaureate exercises gave the invocation and the benediction. The band played for our graduation. CANDIDS What's the fight all about, anyway? We, the members of the Safari Staff, hope that we have successfully preserved these wonderful memories. Without the help of many people, the publication of the Safari would not have been possible. We would like to extend a sincere thank-you to our photographers and staff members. Special thanks goes to Pete Magnuson, who devoted his time generously to developing pictures. To the advertisers who helped to finance this book, and to the faculty members who helped us to preserve the joys of high school life, we also extend a big thank-you. Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore, So do our minutes hasten to their end... Shakespeare And now, as our own moments rush forward to the end of the year 1971, we wish sincerely that these memories remain unchanged; each page in this annual a standing memorial to the closing chapter in our high school lives during 1970-1971. 1971 Safari Staff 84
