On March 16 of that year, the school opened for the nineteen pupils who were enrolled. On September 9, 1914, our present school district 44 was created; and on September 11, 1916, the school year opened for all elementary grades, and the first year of high school. Progress was great in the school, and in December, 1916, the first year of high school was accredited by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. In January of 1918, a new school building was dedicated to house the 184 pupils then attending school in Geraldine. The older portion of our present school struc- ture was the new school building of that time. The first Commencement exercises were held on May 31, 1918, with three students, Thelma Fjelstad, Evelyn McGee, and Elizabeth Stockham, receiving their diplomas. During the following month, June, the school system became fully accredited as a four year high school. Transportation in the early days was extremely poor over the muddy, dirt roads. However, the records show that our first 20-passenger school bus was purchased in September, 1916, at a price of $300. The first venture in school bus transportation was short-lived, and was not resumed again until 1954 when our present transportation system was revived. The system has since increased to include the present fleet of six buses. In the year 1921, a high school football team was organized. This team, play- ing eleven-man ball, won its first game (with Montague, Montana) 84-0. In 1935, the school switched to six-man ball, and in 1959 eight-man ball was introduced. Steady growth was achieved over the years, and it became apparent that a new school was needed to care for the ever-increasing enrollment. Modern transporta- tion and improved roads eliminated many of the smaller schools surrounding Geraldine, and these schools became incorporated into the town’s school system. A new, modern addition was built in 1954 to accommodate the increased enrollment. This addition included several classrooms, an auditorium, a cafeteria, offices, and a gymnasium. With the exception of three classrooms and a band room added in the fall of 1959, this addition completed our present structure. The present school system has an enrollment of 234 students in the elementary grades and 105 students in high school. It is a well-balanced, richly endowed institution which offers modern progressive courses in the academic fields. Since its beginning in 1914, it has advanced to a school we can all be proud of. 83 1918 Thelma Fjelstad Evelyn McGee Elizabeth Stockham 1919 Walter Springer 1920 Mabel Arengard Lucile Clough Ruth
