THE SEARCH THE SEARCHER DO YOU FEEL as though you spend your life wait- ing in line? Therels hardly a man in the picture above who does not anticipate the time when he will be through standing in line. Yet, when we think about it, We spend a good bit of our life waiting in line. We see it, physically, every day at theaters, cafeterias, and bus stops. People stand in line to seek an infinite number of things. The registration line is significant, in a physical sense, only in that it is generally the first line a student encounters at Tech. Of deeper significance is what these men are seeking and especi- ally what they will encounter personally. This is not meant to imply that only in the experience of college is a search being made, or that it ends with gradu- ation. It does mean that, for most people, college pre- sents the first deep challenge requiring conscious per- sonal inquiry. How can this be true for the man in the line who already has formed his objective, knows what he wants? This man, however, is as much a Searcher as the one who arrives with no conception of his abilities and no concrete direction in his life. The man with a goal still has to search to attain it. The man with no goal has to seek it. This is the pur- pose of college: to provide a basis for search. Yet how do things like sports, fraternities, campus publi- cations, dances, and other activities fit into the search? These activities are themselves smaller bases of search: for recreation, a sense of belonging, or recog- nization. These all are necessary in the larger con- cept of search for knowledge. For knowledge, without embracing an understanding of the variability of human relations, has little value. The words usearchn and Hlinew have appeared repeatedly for they are intermeshed in college life. When a person has to evaluate himself, which usually occurs in college, talents and faults are discovered gradually and, as in a line, there seems no way to cut in front or short-cut these discoveries. This is the line in which we stand and the search in which We attempt to find ourselves. 9
