DR. GEORGE M. SPARKS Dr. George M. Sparks. a former war correspondent has broughf college educal'ion +o +housands of Georgia boys and girls +hrough +he developmenf of +he A+lan+a Division of +he Universify of Georgia. He was born a+ Quilman. Georgia on November l9. l889. He aH'encled Mercer Universi+y where he recivecl his A.B.I M.A.l ancl LL.D. de- grees. He did gradua+e work a+ Emory Universil'y, Georgia Tech. George Washingl'on Universify, and Oxford, England. While af Mercer. he was ac+ive in religious and sporl's acfivil'ies as well as being edil'or of +he college paper. Dr. Sparks sfarfed his career as physical educafion director for +he Macon Y.M.C.A. La+er. he became cub reporler. sporl's edi+or and s+a+e edi+or of +he Macon Telegraph. He served as a war correspondenf for +he A+lan+a Consl'ilul'ion. +he Associafed Press. Macon TelegraphI Savannah NewsI Albany Herald. and Columbus Ledger. During World 'War I he became Washing+on correspondenl for +he Al'lanl'a Cons+i+u+ion and Macon Telegraph. He +hen worked wi+h +he Washing+on Times. became ci+y edifor ior +he Telegraphl and in- s+ruc+or in +he School of Journalism of Mercer. On Sepfember l6l I922 romance found i+s way info his busy life when he married Miss Mary Boo+h of Fifzgerald. Al +he age of +hir+y. Dr. Sparks made Who's Who in America. In I924 he became a +eacher of Journalism al' Georgia School of Technology where he lal'er was placed in charge of +he Tech Evening School. Under his capable leadership +he school grew info wha+ now is known as +he A+lan+a Division of +he Universify of Georgia. This in+eresfing college began wi+h one hundred six+y sfudenfs. eleven professors and a sixly-five book library. Today. +he college has grown +0 a s+reng+h of six +housancl sfudeni's. +wo hundred professors. and a large library. The college confinued +o expand un+il i+ ou+grew +hree buildings. H' was I+hen moved lo +he presen+ locafion in I946. The college is unique because i+ provides a college educal'ion for working men and women as well as boys and girls. Ifs s+uden+ bocly consisl's of s+uden+s of all ages and all works of life. Some are day sfudenl's who work and some who work during +he day aH'end school al nighf. While +hese sfudenl's are complefing +heir degrees. 'l'hey receive valuable experience in +heir daily work in +he field of business. The facull'y is made up of well qualified. full-fime professors and compelenf par+-+ime ins+ruc+ors from +he business and professional world. These +each- ers under +he leadership of Dr. Sparks are making a disfincf confribul'ion +0 +he educafion of The grea+ +hrong of sludenls who aH'end +he college. Many o+her colleges are s+udying our college in an eFForl' +0 find +he reason for our success. llOur success can no+ be found; he can only be met Dr. Sparks is a member of several fral'ernal organiza'l'ions such as Pi Delfa Epsilon. Alpha Del+a SigmaI and Phi Sigma Kappa. He is a Mason. a KiwanianI and a member of +he Firs+ Bapfisl' Church of A+lan+a. where he is chairman of +he Board of Direcl'ors. He is au+hor of several books: Camp CO'H'on and Border. l9l7; War Acfivil-ies. I920. and o+hers. Despi+e his many wide-spread ac+ivi+ies. +he A+lan+a Division holds +he largesl' spof in his hearl'l for he can rithully be called ifs masfer builder.
