Zach Suddath Henderson — a man caught up in and dedicated to a vision of the importance of education and the future of an institution, and yet, a man with the activism, the capacity for leadership, to make the vision of progress a reality . . . this is the man who, in his twenty years as president, has brought Georgia Southern College from a small teachers college to a full-fledged institu- tion of higher learning. His retirement this year, after forty years of service as an administrator, marks the end of an era — an era of progress and phenomenal growth — and the beginning of a new era of advancement and continued improve- ment. When Henderson became Dean of Georgia Normal School in 1927, only the normal diploma in education was offered, and the physical facilities of the school were limited to the three original buildings of the 1908 campus, the Administra- tion Building and East and West Halls, plus Anderson Hall, an annex to the Ad building. Henderson ' s twenty years as Dean were years of growth for the man as well as the college. During these years the school ' s name was changed to South Georgia Teachers College and authority given to confer the B. S. degree in education; as student enrollment increased, buildings were added. It was also during these formative years that Henderson, working under four presidents, gained much of the insight and experience which was to make him such an able and effective leader.
