Faces . . . laughing . . . crying . . . thinking . . . happy faces and lonely ones ... all reflecting the mood of the campus. 2 J Dedication To a professor who has accumulated a wealth of witticisms, stories, and puns; To a division chairman who has accelerated academic policy, course standards, and under- graduate and graduate programs; To a Faculty member who has watched this institution grow, and contributed countless meas- ures to its growth; To a teacher who understands students and at all times, is willing to help them; To Dr. Fielding D. Russell, the Senior class proudly dedicates the 1965 Reflector. Dr. Russell ' s talent and humor and his famous dialetic readings are always great demand for student productions. Seniors have seen the school almost double in enrollment, Freshmen already can feel the push for more room, better facilities ' , new ideas. What used to be a small teachers college is well on its way to becoming a great uni- versity. The student body is also in a period of transition — yesterday ' s chil- dren becoming tomorrow ' s leaders. The purpose of the 1965 REFLECTOR is to capture and reflect the mood of this fleeting ever changing period. Southern is something different for each individual here, it is our hope that we have cap- tured in the traditional Student Life section and the new Aerie sec- tion something of the Southern that each student knows. 9 It was Fall 1964 . . . election year! The campaign was heated na- tionwide and campuswide. Students campaigned for their respective candidates. Governor Carl Sanders plugged for the Democrats in McCroan Auditorium (not everyone was a Democrat that night). When it was all over students watched the televisions for the final results. In their hearts they thought they were right. 12 The Frank I. Williams Student Center is a multi-purpose build- ing where students: eat breakfast . . . attend classes . . . drink gal- lons of coffee . . . stand in long lines . . . purchase books ... eat . . . play bridge . . . skip class . . . study . . . watch the tube . . . make dates . . . break dates . . . stand in long lines ... eat ham . . . receive reports from home . . or letters from sweethearts ... or bills ... or draft notices. Registration is the test of nerve and en- durance which greets the Southern stu- dent each quarter. It ' s a fight which pits friend against friend . . . where getting into a class is involved. There are no more entrance exams ... if you can make it through registration . . . you ' re in. 14 Throughout the campus, students find places to study ... to relax ... to observe ... to be observed ... to read (in any position) . . . to gather in groups ... to work ... to play ... to be a part of GSC. 17 18 Campus concerts reflect the social atmosphere of the college. The Four Freshmen, Tommy Roe, Jay and the Americans, The Bill Black Combo, The Rooftop Singers, the Emory Glee Club, the Rolling Stones, the Prague Chamber Orchestra ... all were here ... all for a short while were part of life at Southern. 19 Homecoming ' 65! Months before Jan- uary 28 students began planning . . . discussing . . . working . . . and hoping for sunshine. It all culminated in the greatest homecoming ever. Homecoming week-end was characterized by frantic last minute touches on hair and make up by beauty contestants and on wind blown floats and displays. Most were successful . . . but in a few cases the wind won the battle. 3 22 23 Homecoming ! The concert . . . the crowning of Miss GSC . . . judging of the displays . . . the parade . . . the gym meet . . . the big game with the Petrels . . . the dances . . . the parties . . . the hangovers . . . and all returned to normal with class Monday morning. Often students on a crowded campus seek a place to be alone ... to think ... to brood ... to cry ... to talk quietly with a friend ... or just to escape for a moment from the noise and rush of campus life. 2? There must always be a moment to re- lax .. . to talk ... to laugh ... to forget . . . to remember ... A moment to be oneself among others. 33 Music, dancing, parties, all are a vital part of life at Southern ... all provide diversion . . . a chance to merge with the crowd ... to forget oneself. 35 Night at Southern is a time for fun . . . crowds . . . laughter . . . dancing . . . street dances . . . Christmas carolling . . . the tree lighting . . . bonfires . . . pep rallies. It is a time of laughing . . . talking . . . togetherness. Night is also a time of quiet and solitude. A time to think about life ... a time to escape from the world of people and things ... a time to fall in love. 38 . ...7;. v ,: -V -V. Finally comes the chal- lenge to learn; academic courses grow more difficult; the excitement of the first few weeks gradually begins to wear off; finals and the end of the first quarter come too soon; time to breathe during Christmas holidays, then back again in January. Winter quarter rushes by, and spring quarter is almost gone before they realize it. Summer rapidly approaches, and they are ready for another year. 250 Thomas F. We even made the deadline. That is except for this page which is sitting blankly before me waiting for a few profound words on the trials and tribulations of the over worked yearbook editor. Just one thought keeps running through my mind, We did it . . . We really did it . . . We made the deadline. To most people these may not sound like very profound words but to my staff and me they are almost holy! By Fall of ' 64 all of the basic plans for the 1965 Reflector were made. If we had had five years and a limitless budget maybe we could have carried out all of these optimistic ideas . . . maybe. Room 110 of the Student Center became home for the staff. We crammed it full of furniture, paintings, the noose, popcorn popper, coffee pot, food, duck eggs, etc., etc., and wondered why we could never find anything! My staff endured with me through good times and bad and could always find something to laugh about, or at — usually ourselves. None of us will ever forget our funny but terrible experiences with ink on the picture s, difficult Great Danes, those duck eggs we baked instead of hatched and all of the ridiculous things that happened when rushing against time to make a deadline. I think a few heart felt and enthusiastic thank-you ' s are in order. First I want to thank the entire student body for their help and co- operation. Of course many thanks go to my whole wonderful staff for their unselfish hours of work. Martha and Lee were so completely dependable that I never had to worry about their sections. There was never a dull moment with Mike around ! A special thanks to Doug and Jerry, who not only did their jobs well, but shared my blackest mo- ments and with their cynical sense of humor often cheered me out of my most depressed moods and shared my moments of elation. An- other special thanks to Doug who deserves as much credit as I do. for this book. Our cheerful neighbors, Tommy on one side and L. W. and Carolyn on the other did much to boost our sagging morale. We all thank the Curries for their fine photography, but much more so for their patience and for being our friends through it all. I thank Ric Mandes for having confidence in me and Ed Jones for working miracles! Thanks to these and many others the 1965 REFLECTOR went to press as scheduled.
