ALMA MATER Down among the murmuring pine trees Where old nature smiles, GTC holds up a standard Known for miles and miles. Lift the chorus. Speed it onward, Ne ' er her standard fail, Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, GTC All Hail. From the blue and broad Atlantic, Balmy breezes blow, Wafting far GTCs Spirit May she ever grow. Since his arrival on the campus of Georgia Teachers College in September 1954, Dr. Park ' s cheerful dis- position and willing cooperation has proved to be a tremendous contribution to this, a teachers college. He has never failed to go out of his way to place graduates in good jobs, and even then has not forgotten the education major graduate. It is his attitude that placement does not end with the initial job assignment but is a continuing proposition as long as the GTC graduate remains in the teaching profession. To Dr. Park, teacher-student associations do not end in the class room. He is genuinely interested and con- cerned with each student ' s extracurricular activities, thoroughly subscribing to the educate the whole stu- dent belief. It is with pleasure that we, the members of the 1958 senior class, dedicate this REFLECTOR to JAMES DURWARD PARK. ADMINISTRATION BUILDING— Erected 1908 50 YEARS OF PROGRESS . . . In November of 1957, the Board of Regents of the State of Georgia granted Georgia Teachers College the right to confer the Master of Education degree in seven fields. The college, with an enrollment of 914 students, and with a faculty numbering 93, had crowned fifty years of growth by obtaining a long-sought-for privilege. January of 1958 brought the opening of bids for the new Student Center-Dining Hall to add to the 18 buildings already constructed in Collegeboro, Georgia, a suburb of Statesboro. The GTC students govern themselves, under the leadership of the Student Council and the Interdormitory Council. Girls who make their homes on campus are allowed to date every night in the week if they so desire. They are expected to be back in the dormitory at 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 12 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The GTC Physical Education Department sponsors teams in two intercollegiate sports— basketball and baseball— with a great deal of success in each. The George-Anne, The Reflector, and the Miscellany, the T-Book, and the GTC Agenda comprise the school ' s pub- lications. The newspaper, the annual, the literary quarterly, and the student manual are published by and for the students; the Agenda is a faculty bulletin. It wasn ' t always this way. These facts are the end results of the fifty years of progress since 1908 when the First District Agricultural and Mechanical School was established. In order to supply the needs of the First District, and in conjunction with an act passed by Congress to establish vocational schools throughout the United States, Statesboro and Bulloch County citizens contributed the land on which to build the First District A M High School in 1908. Fifteen students were enrolled that first year— taught by four faculty members. The school was operated by a Board of Trustees, made up of one member from each of the counties in the first District. 6 UNIFORMS . . . The three buildings which were con- structed on the 300 acres just South of Statesboro cost their builders approximately $45,000. The boys ' dormitory, West Hall, contained 42 rooms and was furnished with hot and cold water. The girls ' dormitory, East Hall, had, besides 36 rooms, domestic science departments where the young ladies could learn the arts of homemaking. An academic building stood in the exact center marking a dividing line which neither sex could cross. The required girls ' dress was purchased at the time of their entrance at the First District School and was to be worn at all times— to and from school as well. For casual there was a blue serge skirt, cut along unflattering lines. This standard was aug- mented by a white poplin waist, black hose, and black oxford shoes with a Cuban or military type heel. A white cotton gabardine skirt, worn with white Windsor tie, completed the costume for Sundays and dress occasions. Boys were not restricted as to dress until 1917 when the military department came into existence. Then they wore the khaki military uniform on all days except Sunday. Students failing to comply with the rules were issued demerits, and a system was set up whereby the unfortunate ones could work off their demerits with hours of hard work. For example, the smoking penalty was digging stumps by hand for five hours. CONE HALL-Erected 1954 Junior and Senior Men ' s Dormitory LEWIS HALL-Erected 1937 Junior and Senior Women ' s Dormitory 7 CURRICULUM . . SANFORD HALL-Erected 1937 Freshman and Sophomore Men ' s Dormitory WEST HALL-Erected 1907 Sophomore Women ' s Dormitory Besides the program for which the school had been founded, the curriculum included such electives as Latin, solid geometry, music, psychology, and at least two courses in teacher training. J. W. Hendricks, who was the first prin- cip al, resigned at the end of the first year and was succeeded by E. C. J. Dickens, a member of the Board of Trustees. The year following its beginning the school had quite an increase in enrollment as well as in the number of faculty mem- bers. In 1915 the curriculum was enlarged by adding a course in expression, special work in English composition, and an extensive farm improvement program. Training in domestic duties continued until 1920. Closely following the election of E. V. Hollis as principal in 1914, the A AA School attendance disclosed the alarming fact that education here was coming to a standstill. Since more and more vocational education was being taught in hometown high schools, there was no longer the need for a boarding school of this type. The grounds and buildings began to lose prestige. The merchants of Statesboro and nearby Savannah swung into action— appropriating money and rehabilitating the camous. The Board of Trustees, the General Assembly converted the First District A AA School into the Georgia Normal School. This bill, passed in August of 1924, provided for the educa- tion of public school teachers for south Georgia. Changes in the administration of the Col- lege occurred soon after the change in op- eration. Guy H. Wells, who had become dean in 1926, succeeded Hollis as president the next year. At the same time, Zach S. Henderson, a native of Eastman, Georgia, took over the dean ' s office. EXPANSION . . . A revival of the building program brought in a new gymnasium and a dining hall. The gymnasium, which was built from contributions made by graduates of the in- stitution, was hence given the name Alumni Building. From the state, appro- priations were finally granted with which to construct an auditorium. A $15,000 heating system was installed for these new buildings and for the dormitories and the administra- tion building erected at the founding of the college. At the time of the completion of the dining hall, the President of Georgia Normal School made his home on the third floor of that building. Three hundred students were enrolled at this new teachers college by 1926, justify- ing an increase in the amount of subjects and fields listed in the curriculum. Entrance to the school was determined either by ex- amination or by certificate. New courses added to the curriculum and those for which two-year certificates were issued included library science, physical education, industrial arts, home economics, expression, business, and music. A two-year course for elementary teach- ers was the main attraction. Two literary societies, a Y.W.C.A. home economics club, Latin club, a glee club, and several social organizations were established so that the students interested in grouping with kindred souls could do so. THE REFLECTOR, published by the senior class, had its beginning in 1926 and in- cluded photographs and drawings of stu- dents and buildings. EAST HALL-Erected 1907 Freshman Women ' s Dormitory ANDERSON HALL-Erected 1932 Married Students ' Apartments and Dining Hall PUBLICATIONS . . . ALUAANI BUILDING— Erected 1932 Public Relations Office and Student Publications HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATIONAL BUILDING— Erected 1955 Athletic Offices and Classrooms ,0 The first school newspaper printed at the Normal School was called THE TORCH and was issued monthly, but with the advent of co-educational standards, the name was changed to THE GEORGE-ANNE and was published weekly. The later name was de- rived from a combination of George (sym- bolizing the male student) and Anne (repre- senting the female), both stemming from Georgian. Both high school and college basketball were sponsored by the physical education department at the time. Games were played in the new gymnasium— the Alumni Build- ing. The Student Council went into effect as a method of student government, which deliberated on all discipline problems. In 1928 Georgia Normal School was ad- mitted into the American Association of Teachers ' Colleges. The administration, headed by Guy H. Wells, decided that the college was attract- ing enough students at the end of the 1928 term to justify a four-year course. Since they had already applied for such a grant, they proceeded to get four seniors ready for graduation from a four-year institution. On graduation day in 1929, the right to grant degrees was offered, but none too soon. Those four seniors were waiting in the wings of the auditorium to receive their diplomas when word was received that Georgia Normal School was officially South Georgia Teachers College. The high school curriculum was immedi- ately dropped from the school ' s program and students were trained to teach in sec- ondary schools. ACHIEVEMENT . . . The four-year rating was admitted to the American Association of Teachers Col- leges in 1931. Enrollment after the addi- tion of two years ' work increased to 371 . The faculty numbered 26. The Board of Regents took over the op- eration of the college in 1932. A new training school in which 150 stu- dents could be accommodated, four new tennis courts, an amphitheater, and a nine hole golf course were constructed in the following years. Other face-lifting changes were the addition of two rooms to the ad- ministration building, the paving of the cam- pus roads, acquisition of new dining hall- kitchen equipment, and the refurnishing of the dormitories. Lake Wells was completed in 1931, as well as a student constructed swimming pool. The library, located on the second floor of the administration building, received a donation of 2,000 volumes to add to the 6,000 which were already on hand. This collection, from the library of Dr. Lucien Lamar Knight, contained various volumes of historical and religious value. Social regulations were somewhat less restricted than at the time of the school ' s founding. Girls still wore the uniforms, as they had for 25 years. Those whose mothers had given special permission to the house matron could have two dates each month— on Sunday nights. These dates consisted of an evening church service and a one and a half hour auditorium date— chaperoned. The church bus provided transportation for all dates. BUSINESS AND MUSIC BUILDING— Erected 1932 Classrooms and Laboratories for Business and Music Students INDUSTRIAL ARTS BUILDING— Erected 1948 Drawing, Graphic Art, and General Shop Classrooms Also among girls ' privileges was walking to the highway before sundown, in groups of two, with one chaperon ahead and one behind. The boys ' restrictions included two nights out a week when they had to return to their dormitories by 1 1 P.M. Saturday and Sun- day could be spent out also, however, any student who wished to visit away from the campus had to provide a written permit from home. They could only leave once a month, including trips home. Gambling, drinking, stealing, etc., could cause a student to be expelled. Since ther e was only one car on the campus in 1930, everybody walked. Organizations in social science, popular science, home economics, and mathematics were connected with those classes. A wo- man ' s athletic association was established and promoted participation from all the co- eds at South Georgia Teachers College. Boxing, tennis, basketball, baseball, track, football, and golf comprised the intercolle- giate sports list; and soccer and volleyball added to make a well-rounded intramural program. At one time Dr. Fielding Russell of Winder, Ga., coached the boxing teams. Practice teachers were first sent out to the county schools in 1933. When Dr. Marvin S. Pittman assumed the presidency of the college in July of 1934, almost as many changes occurred as when the four-year program was instituted. Fourteen new faculty members were ad- ded, including Walter L. Downs, the director of training schools, and Miss Sophie John- son, dean of men, who became known as Aunt Sophie. 12 NEW BUILDINGS . . . Again new buildings began to crop up all over the campus. Sanford Hall, the men ' s dormitory with a capacity of 1 70 and at a cost of $85,000; Lewis Hall, a girls ' dormi- tory, the library, the Laboratory High School (since named after President Pittman), a health cottage, and a post office-student ex- change combination were all completed and put into use. The book store was seen as a necessity for the students, and so a system was started to deposit their spending money in a Stu- dent Bank and withdraw it in amounts of 50c, 75c, and $1.00. Besides books and stationery, the patrons of the Blue Tide could buy soft drinks, candy, fruits, sand- wiches, etc. Chapel meetings were held twice a week in AAcCroan Auditorium with Pre sident Pitt- man presiding on Mondays and another faculty member presiding on Fridays. When the number of meetings increased to five, the name chapel was changed to assembly. In 1936, the first band was organized at South Georgia Teachers College. The name of the institution was changed to Georgia Teachers College on September 1, 1939, by the Board of Regents at the recommendation of Chancellor S. V. Sanford, Dr. Marvin S. Pittman, and the state com- missioner of education. Eighty-four degrees were granted from the college in June of 1940. Of the grad- uates, 69 obtained teaching positions; only 1 3 went into some field other than teaching. MARVIN PITTMAN SCHOOL-Erected 1937 THE ROSENWALD LIBRARY-Erected 1937 13 WORLD WAR TWO . . . NURSERY SCHOOL-Erected 1953 WAREHOUSE-Erected 1957 THE BLUE TIDE AND POST OFFICE-1936 With the advent of the Second World War, enrollment dropped considerably. The total yearly enrollment of 1941-42 was 200 less than the previous year. In June of 1 943 the faculty numbered only 27; those were scattered over the fields of fine arts, educa- tion, physical education, languages, music, exact science and social science. As a required part of their education as teachers, all Georgia Teachers College Stu- dents began a program of supervised teach- ing in the Marvin Pittman Laboratory School. Besides directing the classroom activities, their duties involved planning playground work for students. After each experience a conference was held in which the student was taught the problems of management. The Laboratory school now has 385 stu- dents in the elementary school and the high school. Socially, the students were centainly less restricted than they had ever been. The biggest and most important regulation was that there should be no dating during class hours— 8 a.m. -4 p.m. Many social clubs were organized at this time. Dr. Pittman was dismissed as president of the college by Governor Eugene Tal- madge during the summer of 1 941 , and he was succeeded by Dr. A. M. Gates, past president of Brewton Parker Institute in Mt. Vernon. During that year Dr. Fielding Russell had been acting dean in the absence of Dean Zach S. Henderson. 1 4 GRADUATE SCHOOL . . . However, Gates was replaced by Pittman in 1943, and in 1948 Zach Henderson, who had been dean since 1927, came into the presidency. Paul F. Carroll from Spartan- burg, South Carolina, was named dean of the college. In 1948 enrollment began to increase in large numbers, and it was obvious that new dormitory space must be provided. As a result Cone Hall, the new mens ' dormitory, was built. This building is one of the better accommodations for men students in the South. Among other recent physical develop- ments on the Georgia Teachers College cam- pus are the nursery school, a new physical education building, a President ' s home, and additions to the Laboratory School and the Auditorium. Because of the great demand for some- thing other than just a teachers college, the - two other degrees were added in 1954. . - The Bachelor of Arts is given in English or history. Courses toward a pre-medical edu- HOME MANAGEMENT HOUSE-Erec.ed 1934 cation are also offered. The authorization by the Board of Regents on November 15, 1957, for expanding the curriculum to offer the Master of Education degree provides the institution greater op- portunities for increased and more effective service to the state. This constitutes the supreme achievement in the historical de- velopment of the college. PRESIDENT ' S HOAAE-Erected 1954 15 CLASSROOM BUILDING FOR BUSINESS AND SCIENCE Throughout the course of its fifty years of progress, Georgia Teachers College history seems to be pointing out always a hope for improvement in the future. The college will continue to grow. Today many new construction plans are in mind if not on paper; including a new classroom building, a Student Center-dining hall, music building, industrial arts building, girls ' and boys ' dormitories. Enrollment which has been increasing from year to year in leaps and bounds is expected to continue to do so. If Georgia Teachers College grows as much in the next 50 years as it has in the past 50, then its growth will be indeed phenomenal. There is plenty of evidence of expected future progress. The college occupies a 16 large niche in Georgia educational history. Zhe President Wm Georgia Teachers Collkc COLLEGEBOHO, GRQHOIA To The Students of Georgia Teachers College One of the happy experiences of college life is the association with other people who have similar ideals and dreams of the future . The college campus with all of its activities serves as a training ground. A college student learns not only in the classroom, but in the dining hall, the dormitory, the bull sessions, and from participation in extra curricular activities. The college annual serves as a stimllus for recalling many of these thrilling experiences. I believe that the year 1957-58, which is our Fiftieth Anniversary year, will be for all the students here one of the most important years in their life as college students. It is hoped that you will have many experiences which will challenge you to the best of your ability, and that in the years to come you will continue to profit from associations of the Golden Anniversary Year at Georgia Teachers College. ZACH S. HENDERSON To me one of the great Joys of working at Georgia Teachers College cone from the willingness of the student body to make our special days highlights. I wish for you much success in all of your future undertakings . Sincerely yours, Zke Administration PAUL F. CARROLL Dean of the College HELEN DUNCAN Dean of Women DR. RALPH K.
