History of South Qeorgia Teachers College HE South Georgia Teachers College was established by the General Assembly of Georgia in the summer of 1906. The name of the institution at the time of its creation was the First District A. M. School. The school was originally located within the Congressional District and in the town and county making the best offer for its establishment. The people of States- boro and of Bulloch Countv offered the greatest inducement and Statesboro was rec- ognized as the location for the school. I ntil August 19. 1924, the school continued to operate as a District A. M. School. Realizing the need of a State Normal college in this section of the state, the trustees drafted a bill which was passed by the General Assembly of Georgia and approved by Governor Clifford Walker on August 18, 1924. converting the First District A. M. School into the Georgia Normal School. In August of 1929, the State Legislature changed the name of the school to South Georgia Teachers College. The college has also been granted the legal right to award the B. S. degree upon completion of four years of college work.
