CADETS ENJOY INTERESTING CAGE SEASON While the chart does not show a high productivity of victories, Georgia Military College enjoyed one of its most interesting basketball seasons in 1958-59, The Bulldog live played before near capacity crowds in all of its home games at Whitfield gym and also drew large audiences on the road. Considering the fact that Coach Parnell Ruark returned only three starters from last year's team- Forward Dave Parrish, Guards Bill Holmes and Carl Walton-the Bulldogs acquitted themselves in a highly creditable fashion, posting an overall chart of six victories against fourteen defeats. One of the latter was a 60-61 thriller that the Cadets lost to the strong University of Georgia Freshmen on the home tioor, One of the most spectacular victories was the 72-70 triumph scored over Young Harris. rated the number two team in the State, in an overtime affair. Two field goals by Center Ronnie Turner cinched this one for the Cadets. New players who showed up well during the season and gave bright hopes for next year were Forwards George Skippcr Smith. Ed Sibilsky and Barney Hortong Guards Jimmy Francis and Red Drew. Thad Studstill, a holdover from the l957-58 season. also played hne ball in spots. ln the last home game of the season which the Cadets won from Armstrong. 74-70. three key players were honored. Dave Parrish received the Billy Stephens Memorial Trophy for being the team's most valuable player and also the VFW trophy for being the best offensive player. Dave bagged nearly 400 points during the season and several times approached Clark Royer's record of 35 points in a game. Holmes received the VFW cup for being the team's best defensive player and Skipper Smith was similarly honored for being the most talented freshman player. Smith ranked next to Parrish in scoring.
