John Abbott, Coach. BULLPUPS CONCLUDE INTERESTING SEASON IN FIRST YEAR AS MEMBERS OF REGION C The football season of 1958 was a memorable one for the GMC Bullpups. This is true from more than one standpoint. In the first place, it was the Pups' first full season as members of Region IC and the pressure was on them all the way through. Coaches John Abbott and Don Rogers were also plagued with injuries to key players at various stages of the season that severely handicapped them. Many of the players were new to the topfiight competition such as that found in Region 1C, one of the oldest regions in this area. Yet the Bullpups acquitted themselves magnificently and played interesting football throughout a spectacular season that saw them post an overall record of 3-5-0. They finished 3-3 in the conference which was good enough to put them in a tie for third place. The team started badly, dropping the first three games, all well played, to Putnam County, 7-133 to Wilco, 0-6, in a big upset at Irwintong and to Madison County High at Madison, 0-29. However, Wilco and Madison were not in the conference and this did not hurt them too badly. Then came the Pups' most thrilling victory of the season, a 13-0 triumph over favored Monticello at Davenport Field. On Oct. 24, at Barnesville, the Pups walloped another favored foe, beating Gordon High, 14-0. One week later, at Grey, the Pups dropped a heart-breaker to the Jones County Greyhounds, losing 7-13 in the last quarter. Hawkinsville, their next foe, was too good and the Pups bowed 0-24, but they closed out the season with a bang on Nov. 14 when they trounced Wilcox Central, 34-0, on the home lot. It is unfair to single out outstanding players as the Pups played as a team, but it should be pointed out that Jimmy Tillman filled in admirably at quarterback when Sims was hurt and that Ken Moody returned to action after a head injury and played consistently good ball the rest of the season at fullback. George Underwood, senior halfback, was the Pups' most consistent ground gainer and most spectacular runner. On the line, team captain Paul Pennington, Buster Daniel, Jimmy Abbott, Robert Johnson. Philip Bedingfield, and several others played consistently good ball. Pennington made the Telegraph-News Class C All-State team at end, Daniels made the second team at tackle and Underwood got honorable mention.
