Text from Pages 1 - 142 of the 1966 volume:

4 DEDICATION I’m sure you all know someone who stands out in your memory as a hard worker. The one who is always doing his own work and most of everyone else's. The one who never complains about hard work, who toils and slaves and ac- tually enjoys it. We all feel I am sure that these people should have some recognition for their un- ending service. It is for this reason that we, the annual staff, dedicate the 1966 edition of the Pine Embers to Brother C”. We are extremely grateful for his encouragement, his hard work, and unselfish devotion, for he has made our school what it is today. In a very real sense he has given us a blueprint upon which we can build as Christians. 5 Alma Mater In the heart of southern Georgia 'Neath the sun's warm glow Lies the home of Georgia Christian Finest Place we know. Tho’ we leave thy walls forever Many miles go hence, May our love for Georgia Christian Only have commenced. Chorus May we cherish thy traditions Hold thy banner high, Ever guard thy name with fervor Live to do or die. 6 I could begin by saying, “Dear Students”,, but this seems rather empty, to tell you what is in my heart. We have had an eventful year together. We are almost daily making some progress. Most of this progress could not have been made without your help. As Georgia Christian continues to grow in qual- ity, in numbers, and most of all in spirituality each one of you will keep a precious place in my heart. May God bless you in all good things, come home whenever you can. C. C. Arquitt President To Our Students: Working with you is one of the greatest joys of my life. Let us with earnest hearts and exalted faith set our goal to a high and holy purpose. Remember the words oi Lincoln, I will study and get ready, and per- Allen J. RAY Bible WE DEDICATE THIS PAGE TO THE ARQUITTS AND RAYS On entering our school, most people see the obvious. They notice everything around them, but they see nothing 0 what is behind it all. To keep a school such as ours in good working order, an enormous amount of help is required. Most of this assistance is given to us by a few dedicated people who, in many cases, receive very little in return. The Arquitts came to us on August 31st and the Rays on September 15th, Our lives and opinions have been tremendously influenced by these stalwart families. Our problems have been their prob- lems, our hopes and ambitions, theirs; we are so very grateful to them for coming our way. To show our gratitude for the many times they have helped us over the waves, have inspired, and led us, we, the PINE EMBERS STAFF of 1966, dedicate this page to our president and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Arquitt, Jr., and our executive assistant to the president and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Allen J. Ray. May you always be able to carry on in the same way you have this, your first year, and we hope for the very best of everything for both you and the school in future years. 16 President------------------------------Beth Croney Vice President-------------------------Ethelle Vick Secretary----------------------------Susan Copeland Treasurer---------------------------------Paul Drury FAVORITES SPONSOR Beth Croney and Horace Bates Judi Hatfield 18 CHARLES ARNOLD Chorus 1,2,3,4; Basketball 1,2,3; Football 2,3; Student Council 2,4; Class Treasurer 1; Annual Staff 2,4; Class Play Prompter 3; Class Play 4; Pep Club 1 HORACE BATES Football 1,2,3,4; Basketball 1,2,3,4; Base- ball 2,3; Track 1,2,3; J. God is the center of all our every- day activities, and each of us is encouraged to live a truly Christlike life. Religion is not presented to be boring but as a whole- some, satisfying way of life, pleasing to our Maker in Heaven. Each school day begins with a class room study of God's word, with qualified instructors. We then assemble for a half-hour devotional period. The day's activities are ended with a de- votion in the dorms. One of the most inspirational times of all is when we go out at night for a joint de- votion under the stars, build a big-bonfire, and blend our voices in song and prayer. As students leave our school, they have a close friendship for one another and for God, because of their frequent meetings with Him. 79 CHORUS TRIPS BALL GAMES 80 Frank shuts Bruce up! Her humil- ity combined with mischievous pranks, jubilance, and sparkling spirit has captivated all since she entered G.C. S. in the fall of 1962. Beth was escorted by Horace Bates, a Senior from Jen- nings, Florida. Although this is Horace's first year at G.C.S., he has made many friends here. Karen Carney, a Senior from Vero Beach, Florida, was one of the runners-up. for Homecoming Queen. Her bright personality has won the friendship of many, and will not soon be forgotten. Karen was escorted by Leonard Smith, a Senior from Norfolk, Virginia. Even if this is Leonard's last year, his name will live long at G. C. S. Lynda Wilkins, a Senior from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was the other runner-up for Homecoming Queen. During the past four years at G.C.S., she has been very out- standing, both in athletics and music. Lynda was escorted by Andrew Sykes, a Sophomore, from Valdosta, Georgia. The staff has worked many long hours, we have had many close calls with our “dead- lines”, have been discouraged many times, but when we checked over our dummy” for the last time, I felt like it was worth it. I can hardly wait to see the finished product. As editor, I would like to thank the following peo- ple for helping to make this publication possible: my mother, Mrs. Sam Lee, for many hours of time and words of encouragement, Susan for being a faithful assistant, Brother C” for being so patient about our classes, Brothers Arquitt and Ray for getting us out of “jams” and the businesses and individuals who bought ads. Being selected editor of PINE EMBERS OF 1966, was the fulfillment of a dream. I have learned much about dealing with people, and to enjoy doing a hard job. I shall always be grateful to the faculty for choosing me for this honor. To you underclassmen, please, always hold up the principles of this school and the Christian teach- ings you get here. Profit by our mistakes and make next year and the years thereafter better and bet- ter. To the seniors, in the words of our alma mater, May our love for Georgia Christian only have commenced.” £) Dores Lee Editor Susan, crop these pictures!” This is one sentence that I shall never forget. There has been many long, hard, late, tiresome hours put into the 1966 PINE EM- BERS. We have had many, disappointments, and real scares, but when I stopped to realize the long lasting enjoyment that we will receive by reading this edition, the disappointments and scares turned into loads of fun. Dovld Lipscomb College «««••■••■ otr 1966 IS AN EXCITING YEAR TO BE AT President Athens Clay Pullias officially opens Lipscomb's 75th Anniversary Year on October 5, 1965, speaking to 2616 students in the College, High School, Junior High School and Elementary School, along with the combined faculties and staffs. McQuiddy Physical Education Building was the only place large enough to hold the audience of nearly 2800. DAVID LIPSCOMB COLLEGE LIPSCOMB STUDENTS will have an important part in the 75th Anniversary Year Observance, October 5, 1965 through October 9, 1966. Memorable experiences growing out of participating in this historic celebration will be cherished throughout their lives. Climax of the observance will be at Open House on October 9, 1966, when two new buildings will be dedicated. These are the new Science Building and Lecture Auditorium scheduled for comple- tion in September at a cost of $1,490,000. A MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM costing more than $11,760,000 was recently approved by the Lipscomb Board of Direc- tors. A new Student Services Building, a seven or eight story dormitory for men, a major ad- dition to the library, and other construction will be included. A third floor is being added to Fanning Hall, newest dormitory for women, which will add room for 111 more boarding women. This construction, which is also scheduled for completion in Sep- tember, is already under way. LIPSCOMB WELCOMES gradu- ates of Christian schools and jun- ior colleges to its student body. Records for many years past show that they assume leadership in academic achievement, extra cur- ricular activities, student organiza- tions, and spiritual emphasis programs. They find it easy to fit into the Christian environment, daily worship and daily Bible classes, and are easily at home on the campus. FOUR-QUARTER OPERATION is attracting more and more stu- dents to apply for admission in the summer quarter. Registration for the 1966 summer quarter will be held June 13. Boarding students entering then will hold room reser- vations through fall, winter and spring quarters. They will also be able to preregister for the fall quarter, thus receiving preference in working out their class sched- ules. Few students can find summer employment that will be worth as much financially as will the com- pletion of a full quarter’s work in college. By studying on a year- round basis they can also add ma- terially to their life income by qualifying for permanent employ- ment at an earlier date. Whether you plan to he a beginning freshman or a junior in col- lege in 1966-67, and whether you expect to enroll in June or Sep- tember, write immediately for full information on year-round Chris- tian education at Lipscomb.
