Say I do not talk so much As when I did not know Who Wyatt and Surrey were U Who wrote what naturalistic novel When I came with bag and baggage and no brains Tell them I am not so drunk I On simple bourbon Without ice cubes My back is arched a bit A My stomach slightly expanded. I sit praying for no spring But only wicked winter Playing stud poker with my sinuses. The winter reminds me of you And your slim, tall body and your soft knowledge. The snow reminds me of you and your orange sherbet dress and removing it. The ice reminds me of you and your quick monotone telling me where to get off at. The frost reminds me of you all listening to me limp in the snow picking me up, carrying me back. Which one of you it was Who taught me how to pray and love the frozen ground That the linden could be lovely Hanging bare against the moon That I could weep at nickel cheap songs And all God's chillun got wings or halos Or some such things I don't recall. Tell them I am surer now and warmer Now and harder if you touch me Tell them I am stronger now And bathe more often Sing not so much Speak not so loud Tell them I am sitting Rarely crying Praying for the frozen ground Thinking of another spring.
