1- r f Our dedication is to the one individual who has exemplified those qualities most respected and valued in these early years of our medical careers. He has shown us that the art of education is more than instructing from a lecterng it is a personal and total involvement in each student's learning process. We recognize the effort he has put forth on our behalf to organize a complex array of seemingly unrelated data into a meaningful whole. The knowledge and, more importantly, the interest which he has imparted are lifelong gifts which must be transmitted to each new generation of physicians. Because of his genuine devotion to teaching and for demonstrating so clearly those ideals upon which we will form our lives, we dedicate this yearbook to Richard Gillis, Ph.D.

GEORGETOVVN UNIVERSITY scnoox. or MEDICII'-IE WASHINGTON. D. C. 20007 T November 15, 1971 To The Graduating Class of 1972 Dear Friends and Graduates, It is a special pleasure each year to comply with the invitation of the yearbook staff to write this message. At this moment, I am completing internship letters for each of you. I have had the opportunity of reviewing each academic record, including the evaluations written by your instructors in the junior clerkships. I hope you will not be surprised to learn that your faculty has a very high opinion of your talent, competence and industry. I will not dwell on the fact that these past four years have been exciting ones, both at Georgetown and elsewhere. The world has changed and so have we. There are some who think we are preparing well for the future of medicine, as evidenced by the fact that this year we are again breaking the all time record for number of appli- cations to an American medical school! You are now undifferentiated physicians, and among the best of that species. Ten years from now you will be hopelessly obsolete as physicians if you have not dedicated yourselves to a lifetime of study, applying the habits and methods of learning that you developed here at Georgetown under the guidance of your dedicated faculty. You must cope with a body of medical knowledge that is increasing relentlessly. As you head towards differentiation in a variety of careers -- the clinical specialties, family medicine, teaching and investi- gation, administration -- you will be reminded of this school frequently and in many ways. Come back to Georgetown as often as you can to tell us of your accomplishments, and to see ours. Let us share our futures together. Sincerely, John C. Rose, M.D. Dean
