If you have a question, please forward to the Endocrine Organ, Box SU 4885, Georgetown Hospital, Wash., D. C. Names and diagnoses withheld upon request. Dear Sir: My eight year old son Emil has developed a ruddy complexion, protrud- ing eyes and seems quite overactive and nervous lately. My mother-in-law insists that he has a gland disorder of some sort. Do you think Emil should see a doctor and have some sort of tests? Signed, Worried Dear Worried: Yes, indeed, I would recommend that he take the MCAT and the first part of the National Boards. We just MIGHT be able to get him into Massa- chusetts General. Where does he stand in his class? Signed, Laurence A. Kyle Chief of Medicine Georgetown University Hosp. DearSir: After taking a course of Androgenic Hormones for being puny and under- weight, I have developed bulging muscles, frontal baldness, thick chest hair, a deep rich voice and am offered a Football scholarship to the Uni- my mother wants me to go to finishing model. The boy next door, Johnnie Klein- versity of Arkansas. However, school first and then to be a felter likes me very much and wants me to get married. He's very nice but my mother thinks we are both toofyoung. l'm very confused about everything. Can you help me? Christine C. Turner Dear Christine: You should follow your heart in this case. Don't listen to your mother because she is probably quite jealous . . . both of your relationship with Johnnie Kleinfelter and your physical superiority. Besides, any Medical Publication would tell you that boys like Johnny are hard to find. As a special present to you and Johnny, my laboratory would be delighted to run chromosome counts on all your children, free of charge, and make the necessary recommendations for treatment.. Malcolm M. Martin Chief of Gender Roles Dear Sir: A recent article in the July 1962 issue of Mademoiselle presents a series of 409 Red-headed Achondroplastic Dwarfs who had blood sugar determina- tions over a periof of 3 years. The average blood sugar was 20 Mgfk below the normal level. Do you think there could be an association between lslet cell adenoma and Achondroplastic dwartism. Signed, Puzzled Dear Puzzled: You evidently don't care to keep up with the literature. Reader's Digest and the Ladies Home Journal have since refuted the results that you speak of. Not only that, the laboratory work is questionable. Let that be a lesson to you Puzzled, never accept Lab Work that is not signed by the person who performed it in the presence of two witnesses and a notary republic. Dan Mintz Professor of Scrutiny D.C. Gen. Hospital Dear Doctor: ,My four year old Cocker Spaniel, Elmer, had been thoroughly house- broken ever since he was six months old. Recently he has been wetting the rug, the kitchen floor, and just about everything in sight. He seems awfully young to have benign prostatic hypertrophy and I am wondering about the cause of his urinary dysfunction. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Signed, Bewildered Dear Bewildered, Well, by and large, there are several things we may be dealing with. It could well be that Elmer is not really incontinent, but, in the main, polyuric. The next time you catch him urinating on the rug, deftly slip an Acetest tablet underneath him. This procedure is not without its complications, as these tablets are quite toxic when eaten by dogs, or anyone else. An alternate would be to examine his eyegrounds for microaneurysms. But ophthalmoscopes being as expensive as they are these days, your best bet is to buy a new dog. Signed, J. Canary Chief of Endocrinology
