Sumichrast Although there were high expectations for a winning season, 17 points kept the Little Hoyas from being undefeated. The season started with an easy victory over Wilson 23-0. The of¬ fense was led by Steve Clark, who scored two touchdowns. Against Episcopal, the offense continued to advance the ball. Q.B. Tobin Finizio and tight end J.C. delReal connected well before J.C. left with broken ribs. Fluke plays by Episcopal enabled them to upset Prep 20-17. Prep stunned Landon and broke their 13 game winning streak. In the fourth quarter, tail back Martin Sumichrast scored the winning touchdown with a three yard burst. Another key play was the game-saving inter¬ ception by Pat Garrett. After an easy victory over Bullis, perhaps the largest crowd in Prep history attended the Coupe-Kuzik bowl, the annual war with Gonzaga. Prep dominated throughout the game with inspir¬ ing defense led by Mike Walsh, Phil Merkle, and P.J. Smith. On offense, Matt Quinn outplayed Gonzaga’s All-Met Edgar Davis. To add to the brilliant individual performances, Mark Colonna hit a Prep record 42 yard field goal. Gonzaga, though, got lucky in some untimely turnovers and squeaked by 13-9. Prep’s anger from the previous game was bestowed upon Bishop Walsh in winning 24-12. Tobin passed for two TD passes to John Leasure and J.C. delReal while Martin Sumichrast ran for over 100 yards. Homecoming was spoiled when St. Albans edged Prep 24-21. Except for three long plays by the Bulldogs, the defense played admirably. The Hoyas then went on to meet city-ranked St. Stephens. Down 21-7 at halftime, Prep held Stephens score¬ less in the second half and almost pulled off a victory. Steve Clark capped a fine performance with a 30 yard touchdown run. The team then entered the final game of the season. Substitute Mark Judge made two spectacular interceptions to halt Sidwell Friends’ drives and Tim Gaudette and Mike Bidwell both scored to lead the Hoyas to victory. Prep’s 5-4 record does not show how close the games were. All four losses were within seven points. The defense produced AII-IAC’s Mike Walsh and Phil Merkle who led the team in tackles. Offensively, Mike Fegan and Matt Quinn headed the All-1 AC list with Mark Colonna named as All-1 AC kicker. Manag¬ ers Greg Ellis and Brett Fishburne and their staff did a fine job for the team. Coaches Gilmore, Gleason, Shea and Whalen aided Head Coach Jim Fegan in producing this years Hoya football team. 48 Varsity Football A
