RYAN, SJ. 13QC'fUl'll?ld Ilafzflnzasttr My congratulations and prayerful best wishes to the Class of 1956 of Georgetown Prep. You are indeed a fortunate group. In our turbulent world the rich heritage of Catholic cultural education which you have won for yourselves is an asset above price, both for time and for eternity. At the same time it imposes upon you a deep obligation. The world needs. you. It needs the lessons you have been taught, the ideals you have made your own. By continuing steadfastly on the path upon which you have set your feet. you will be true apostles. Keep your standard high! What you have received here can make you great. Now, go forward. The prayers of your teachers will follow you throughout life. God be with you. WILLIAM A. RYAN, S.J. From the beginning it became evident that the Boosters would set the pace for the rest of the school in all school endeavors. Under the guidance of Mr. J. T. Gallagher Martineau Mxssmg Connolly sfwm ff-'Z rf, if , x Hy- . .1- ,zi S4 Richard Montgomery The Little Hoyas started off the season with an excellent display of spirit and ability. rolling over Richard Montgomery of Rock- ville by a score of 21-0. After several drives inside the thirty- yard line, the tirst break came when Johnny Powell jumped on a fumble in the end zone. Near the close of the third quarter Roark Reed intercepted a pass on Rockville's thirty- yard line to set up the next touchdown. A quick succession of passes by Dwight Lefling- well moved the ball to the ten-yard line where Tony Carroll, taking over as quarter- back, threw a short pass to Dan Radice for the second touchdown of the day. Prep's third touchdown came on a punt re- turn when the Hoyas were forced to kick and Tom Lyman of Rockville began the run-back. A jarring tackle by Dwight Leflingwell sent the ball soaring into the air and Don De Fran- ceaux grabbed it and romped over the goal line, much to the delight of the packed stands. Jack Schaefer kicked the conversion with the same ease as after the first two touchdowns. Saint Albans Rain moved the Saint Albans game from Friday to Monday and this seemed to bring about a lack of life and spirit in the team. This lack appeared the second time that Saint Albans, got their hands on the ball. They promptly proceeded to march down the tield sending Porter Shreeve for the touch- down. Things remained about the same with the Little Hoyas for the rest of the day. At the middle of the fourth quarter the score read 33-0. Prep, not wishing to be left forgotten in the scoring column, scored two touch- downs, both of them on passesg one thrown by Jack Schaefer to Roark Reed for seventy yards, the other from Dwight Lerlingwell to Tony Carroll covering forty-two yards. The game was not a complete loss, because the students yelled louder than if they were winning and all looked upon this game as the one bad game every team plays in a season. As Mr. Mehr said after the game concerning this same line on defense, our line didn't break. It might have bent a little, but it never broke. Gonzaga showed their strength the third time they got their hands on the ball. After a Prep fumble on Gonzaga's thirty-four-yard line, the Eagles marched down field and drove over as the quarter ended. In the beginning of the second quarter, Prep again fumbled and Gonzaga went over in three plays. How- ever, in the middle of the third quarter, the spirited Prep squad showed their strength in a goal-line stand forcing Gonzaga to fumble. But the breaks were still against the Prep team as they started their march out from the goal line. They fumbled again inside their own twenty, and the Eagles scored again. In the fourth quarter Prep showed some life as they marched sixty yards for their only T.D., with Jack Schaefer scoring from the two. Taking Prep's kickoff on the twenty, Gonzagafs speedy halfback raced to the Prep's forty. Four plays later on a quarter- back sneak, the Eagles scored. The only bright spot of the game was the spirit expressed by the students. They out- cheered the Gonzaga stands and didn't stop until the game was over. This was the finest spirit showed in the school in many a year as was noticed by many of the rain- soaked visitors. pan ,i. . lwh' gfqfrf, Jgw., bIlQvll: f V. . ,Mijn 'y. . , , ' ,.,.y .4 fy-'vr.': A-I ,,A,1:- ..- if - .J is '.', -'- - 'Y'.'i T'...b7.,1YT , M. 4... :Maja f . 4e,f. wtf.,f,,.,,,,,F,,g,., ,fri 1, l. They were not up for the game, although they felt they had a far superior team than Friends. We held the ball for two sets of downs but then were forced to kick. When Friends took over they scored in seven plays. This finally woke up the team and we came back and scored almost immediately on a twenty- six-yard touchdown run by Jack Schaefer. In the second quarter Prep had control of the ball almost completely but lacked that spark which is needed to score. The third quarter showed a clear picture of Bernie C1'QCii8'S running ability. Bernie made four fine runs with excellent blocking from the line. We did not score again until the fourth quarter when Schaefer again went over for a T.D. Dwight Lefhngwell put a quick end to Friends last chance by intercepting a pass on the nine-yard line. The game ended moments later and we added another win to our record. .xxx 'PKI' ...is G'twn Prep Opp 21 Richard Montgomery 0 14 Saint Albans 33 14 Friends . . . 7 7 Loyola . . 0 6 Gonzaga , . 26 13 Buiis , . 13 19 Landon , , , 13 16 De Matha . ,.,., 0 Co-Captains De Franceaux and Schaefer discuss the world situation. Sh., iii'- Line Coach Mike Warner and Head Coach Mr. Mehr map out strategy for the coming season with Mr. Coupe, Athletic Director. De Matha In Prep's last game with De Matha, the Little Hoyas handled themselves for sixty minutes as men who knew where they were going. They were confident of sure victory. This confidence showed itself in the line led by Jerry Aneskewich, whose blocking and defensive play proved to be one of Prep's biggest advantages. In the second quarter Dwight Lefiingwell ran eleven yards for our first score on a well executed draw play through the middle of the line. In the fourth quarter Bernie Credle blocked a punt in the end zone for an automatic safety. In the same quarter, Lefiingwell and Carroll teamed up for our second T.D., on a fifty-two-yard play making the final score 16-0. During the entire game our fierce offense was hurt by several fumbles which kept the score from being doubled. However, at the same time the Stags were kept scoreless by the consistent defensive play of the Little Hoyas, led by Dwight Lefiingwell.
