GEORGETOWN PEABODY LIBRARY 3 2120 00069 385 1 For Reference Not to be taken from this room The 1 973 Georgian Georgetown High School Georgetown Massachusetts I 1 973 Georgian Dedication John W. DeAngelis “Mr. De” has always given our class useful advice and much needed encouragement. Some- times, when we lost faith in ourselves, he convinced us to try a little harder. During the course of the year our Problems of Democracy classes were not always the most pleasant periods of the day, but they were certainly the liveliest. Our knowledge of the political process was increased by Mr. De’s own controversial experience as town selectman. He also taught most of us how to drive. His concern for our personal safety extended beyond Driver Ed. When the legal drinking age was lowered in March, he made certain we understood all the tech- nicalities and implications of the law. He presented the facts to us — no sermons. He even joked about our weekend fun, nicknaming it “going to the well!” Mr. De has always treated us like adults. He showed respect for our points of view and never forced his own on us. He has been a true friend. Thank you Mr. De! Their activities ranged from service projects to cultural experiences. They kept a Drama Club tradition alive by Christmas caroling at local nursing homes and also attended two plays in Haverhill, Lorca’s Blood Wedding and J. B. The club devoted most of its energies to the annual spring play. This year they had an extra special goal: the profits from this year ' s production Boys and Ghouls Together was used to initiate a Drama Club Scholarship Fund in memory of Helene Garnache, to be given annually to an active Senior member of the club. The Drama Club wrapped up this year’s successful and pleasant activities with a beach outing at Crane’s Beach in June. 70 Audio-Visual Club L-R, B. Quirke, S. Amero, R. Short, R. Segel, D. Hamelin, D. Durkee, S. Smith, R. Boileau, M. Mikulskis Whenever some piece of equipment foils to function properly, a teacher con always depend on the A.V. boys to come to the rescue. These devoted boys spend most of their spare school time in the media center. Since the media center was expanded this year, their importance was increased. They repair, distribute, and collect machinery, put in long hours at school taping evening television programs for classroom use, and some even aid at the elementary schools’ media cen- ters. Their ability to understand the mechanics of the expensive equipment and their willingness to aid the media department makes them a truly invaluable asset to the entire school. 72 Foreign Language Club The Foreign Language Club supplements classroom study of foreign languages by providing an opportunity for students to learn more about foreign cultures. In December the club had a Christmas party complete with a Mexican pinata and an appearance by Pere Noel. In the spring the club also dined at the restaurant Chez Drey- fus to sample French cuisine. The more fortunate members of the club were able to spend April vacation in France. This was the first overseas trip undertaken by a group of G.H.S. students. Among the places they visited were LeMans, Tours, Normandy, the Loire Valley, and Paris. Hopefully these educational excursions will become a permanent feature of the club and school. Cobb, THIRD ROW: S. Thompson The Student Council attempts to obtain privileges for the student body at G.H.S. As elected representatives they are faced with the dilemma of bridging the gap between student demands and expectations of the administration. This year their job was eased by the for- mation of the Student Advisory Committee and the inclusion of students on faculty committees. The Student Council also worked for the revision of the school smok- ing policy. They did a radio program on station WNBP in November, and to raise money for the annual Stu- dent Council Scholarship they sold shares in education and held a hilarious donkey basketball game in Decem- ber. The most welcomed accomplishment of the Student Council, however, was the addition of a cold beverage machine in the cafeteria. 74 Shelley Dowd — President Band George Norris — Director Choir FRONT ROW: L-R, C. The players bought their own equipment and paid for the ice time, which was occasionally at 5 AM. They received support from the community in the form of donated hockey sticks and buses. The boys competed with many teams from the Northshore and played well for a first year squad. 78 GHS 4 HAMILTON-WENHAM 0 GHS 0 TRITON 7 GHS 9 MANCHESTER 3 GHS 2 ROCKPORT 0 GHS 3 IPSWICH 8 GHS 2 N.
