GEORGETOWN PEABODY LIBRARY 3 2120 00069 380 2 For Reference Not to be taken from this room THE GEORGIAN 1967 Published by the Senior Class GEORGETOWN HIGH SCHOOL . Georgetown, Massachusetts DEDICATION We live in a troubled world. While hoping for peace, we are constantly faced with the necessity of defending freedom with force. Many of the boys in our class will serve in the Armed Forces, and will unfortunately face the possibility of dying in defense of our c ountry. We can not possibly pay our debt to them. In appreciation of their sacrifice, we the senior class, wish to dedicate the 1967 GEORGIAN to the young men of our generation who are serving and will serve in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. “Ask not what your country can do for you. . . AEROSPACE CLUB This year the Aerospace Club undertook project S.L.E.M. (Simulated Lunar Excursion Module) at 150 West Main Street, now known as Cape Sheldon. The boys built a simulated space capsule, and during February and April vacations three-day and six-day missions were completed. The flights were covered by the press and television. Mr. Mrs. Alan Shepard, Sr., parents of astronaut Alan Shepard were on hand to wish the boys well. Aerospace Club President, Ray Burleigh comments on the project. The S.L.E.M. pro- ject was undertaken with a number of goals in mind. A better understanding of spacecraft design, construction, and use was the primary goal although research procedures were also stressed. The xlates and lengths of the mis- sions were largely determined by our desire to break the existing national duration records. The first two missions totaled 653 man hours, giving us a substantial lead in the space race. L. to R.: M. Pierson, R. Burleigh, D. Rosene, R. Bur- leigh, R. Duggan, K. Burleigh, W. Hopkins, G. Then came the fall of 1966 and with it a new instructor. Miss Pamela Simpson organized a varsity team and arranged a few scrim- mages followed by some league games. Co-ed volleyball, boys ' volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, and wrestling programs were directed by Mr. Col- lamore and Miss Simpson. This was the most extensive intramural program yet offered at GHS. Physical Education classes serve as a basis for intramural and interscholastic sports. The girls ' program includes field hockey, volley- ball, basketball, gymnastics, and softball. For boys, the department provides football, basket- ball, wrestling, volleyball, gymnastics, track, cross country, and baseball. 69 SENIOR ACTIVITIES HOOTENANNY Bill and Renee The Seniors sing. STUDENT GOVERNMENT DAY Irene Handren represented GHS at the annual Student Government Day in Boston on April 7. In a mock session of the General Court, four hundred students from the entire state voted on such bills as lowering the voting age to eighteen, setting up a water pollution control board, and extending the powers of M.D.C. Participating in committee and legislative sessions gave the students a greater under- standing of Massachusetts Government. STUDENT EXCHANGE DAY R. Clark, V. Manos, J. Murgida, I. Handren, J. Weeks of rehearsal resulted in a most delightful play. With plenty of behind the scene work by the entire class, the play was a theatrical as well as a financial success. FATHER’S BEEN TO MARS had appeal for young and old alike. It kept the audience laughing at each performance. By the probity of its members a family takes stature. And by the worth of its single communities, a nation is great or ignoble. r — ‘ Whatever is great in America is rooted in neighborhood institutions: the local church, the local school, the local enterprise. How strong the community ' s faith, how sound its learning, how serviceable ts business? There are your real criteria. For as grows the community, so prospers the Nation. Such is the creed to which your IGA grocer subscribes. Independent owner of his store, specializing in local service, he is vitally concerned with local institutions. He is your neighbor; his children go to school with your children; his income is spent in your town. You ' ll find he thinks about things much the same way as you do.
