THE GEORGIAN Published by the Senior Class Georgetown High School Georgetown, Massachusetts JUNE 1965

EDITOR ' S FOREWORD Our senior year has been one marked by many historical milestones. In November of 1964, we witnessed the victory of the liberal faction lead by Lyndon Baines Johnson over the conserva- tive faction lead by Barry Morris Goldwater. It was the first time in many years that the elec- torate had a clear choice between two differing political outlooks. In February of 1965, we saw the escalation of the war in South Viet Nam, when American planes were used against Communists in the North. This was the time when America almost doubled its military force in South Viet Nam. Also in South Viet Nam we witnessed a relatively peaceful change of power for the first time in many years. At the present time it seems that this war is reaching its turning point. March of 1965 saw a great victory in the Civil Rights movement in Selma, Alabama. Prompted by demonstrations and marches. Congress will pass, in the near future, a stronger voter regi- stration law to prevent discrimination in voter registration for federal elections. In May of this year, we witnessed the use of American Troops in Latin America to stimulate the Organization of American States to establish a peace-keeping force. America’s quick action apparently halted Communist plans for the take-over of the Dominican Republic. To climax our senior year, America safely landed the Gemini IV space craft after 62 orbits and 1.7 million miles. America ' s first space walker. Astronaut White, left the capsule and floated freely in space for over twenty minutes. We, as Americans, are proud to be part of these history-making events. We hope that man will refrain from conquering and subjugating his fellow men and strive for the conquest of space. Our country stands before the world as an example of how free men, under God, can build a community of neighbors, working together for the good of all. Harry S. Truman (Report on Korea) July 19, 1950 -Edward Romar Editor 2
