GEORGETOWN PEABODY LIBRARY 3 2120 00069 388 5 For Reference Not to be taken from this room The GEORGIAN Published by the Senior Class Georgetown High School Georgetown, Massachusetts JUNE 1964 Our Senior year has been one steeped in history. Many events will be noted in the history texts of the future. Of these, two stand out. In August of 1963, a demon- stration was held. The inte- grated March on Washington was the most remarkable demonstration of the privi- leges the members of a demo- cratic society enjoy that this nation and the world has ever seen. Still, it was a call for equal rights and opportunities for all members of our society. In November of 1963, this nation witnessed an appalling spectacle, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the thirty- fifth President of the United States. Whatever our per- sonal political beliefs. Presi- dent Kennedy was the elected leader, our elected leader; as such, he is mourned by a bereft nation. These events should teach us something. Our society is not perfect. The assassination of a President should make this quite clear. The necessity of a demonstration of the magni- tude of the March on Washing- ton is even more evidence. Yet, these have given us impressive examples of the positive aspects of our society. It is up to us, the youth of America, to dedicate our- selves to the task of making our society more nearly per- fect for coming generations. We can succeed; we cannot afford to fail. ... How many ages hence Shall this our lofty scene be acted over. In states unborn and accents yet unknown! JULIUS CAESAR DEDICATION Thank me no thankings, nor proud me no prouds ROMEO AND JULIET Those who have come to know this teacher both inside and outside the classroom have witnessed time and time again her unselfish devotion to all. In many instances, her gentle prodding has set a student in the right direc- tion. Her advice is not taken lightly. To us she represents all that is good and all that we should strive to be. She has been the sole inspiration and advisor of the Helen L. Davis chapter of the National Honor Society and the head of the English Department. When she leaves Georgetown High School at the end of this year, she will be missed. It is with the deepest respect and admiration that we, the members of the Class of Nineteen Sixty-four, dedicate our Georgian to Mrs. Evelyn Shaw. Our purses shall be proud, our garments poor: For ' tis the mind that makes the body rich. - THE TAMING OF THE SHREW FACULTY Edward E. Kelleher, B.S. University of New Hampshire; M D. Frank Hatch Although Georgetown High does not have a regulation track which could be used for practice, the members of the track team have done a terrific job. The Seniors on the team, Frank Hatch and Peter Jeans, have made individual efforts which we can be proud of, as has next year’s captain, Charles Waldner. It is to be hoped that the team will be able to use a regulation track in the near future; this should enable the members to improve. Peter Jeans, Co-Captain • L 5 i i 1 FRONT ROW: C. Waldner, J. A fantastic league record, 13 and 1, their timely hitting, good team balance combined with strong pitching - all these - carried them into the Class C finals of the Eastern Massachusetts Tour- nament. A never-say-die atti- tude and absolute teamwork pulled several games out when our boys were behind. A feature of the state tourna- ment was the home run hitting of diminutive Ken Girard, who homered in each of the first three games. Various news- papers picked All teams which honored outstanding players. The Boston Traveler picked Lance Cramer on the Class C All team, while McBrierty, Mello, Rogers, and Girard were given honorable mention. We shall watch with interest the 1965 baseball club, since only five squad members were lost by graduation. la. ' H l¥ ’57T V 1- KNEELING: Mason, Bridges, Maynard, Drew, A. Many of the merchants and pro- prietors in the area have for several years employed young people of high school age, thereby enabling the students to earn money for college and to gain practical experience in the world of work. We are sure that these advertisers feel great pride when their” young people receive college degrees or are notably successful in other fields. The help given to our young people by these employers is immeasurable in dollars and cents; it is an intangible. For their continued help P. Whitney, L. Prescott, R. Sweeney WE SALUTE THEM C.
