Steve Johnson has been a friend and teacher to almost every student at G.H.S. If not for his patient and guiding hand, the Buffalo would not be possible. With his help the yearbook staff was equipped with it’s own darkroom. His efforts to unify the staff, as yearbook adviser, made this yearbook one of the best. For his help and dedication, we (the yearbook staff) dedicate this yearbook to Steve Johnson. 3 James Bailey Jeffery Angle ec eicwn $iigA 'fcAcm % aM 0f J983 The past is but a memory The present a reality The future a destiny Mikel Bonomo Brenda Burress Bridget Cagle Joyce Chow Eric Cunningham 4 Seniors Tamera Dandridge Deborah Davis William Dowers Kris Crawford Steve Cornwell Brian Cornwell Donald Clay Shelly Grubb Kimberly Golcynski Earnest Gill Jim Edwards Seniors 5 Jeffery Alan Angle “Jeff” I enjoy playing football and spending time with my friends. The band greatly appreciated such support in times such as these. It was a definite plus to be able to keep the uniforms hanging neatly in the trailer rather than having to tote them home and back and risk soiling and wrinkling. A bus ride with more comfort ended in more relaxed competitors and sharper looking uniforms. Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Burke. Now this looks real interesting!! Say Cheese! Drum Majors LeAnn Parker. Jerry Martin and Marguerite Barker. 26 Wake Up LeAnn. The Day Is Just Starting. AN INSIDE LOOK AT BAND Most people think of the band as a bunch of people just playing music. But there’s alot more to the band than meets the eye. There are long hours of practicing at band camp to prepare for field competition, working on the field and having sectionals to get everything just right. Some individuals sold plant seeds and jewelry to help pay for the camp. As for the concert band, they spend everyday during 4th hour practicing for concerts and contests. The band students participate in a Christmas concert and the Vermilion County Festival. The concert band has its own money making projects. They sell oranges and grapefruits, and cheese and sausages to raise money for the things they really need or want. On the field or off, the band does its best to represent the spirit of Georgetown High School. SCHOOL YEAR PRESERVED IN PRINTS AND PICTURES Did you get the photos for that job done yet? Is the copy written for that assignment? Do you have a layout design planned? Can you type this copy for me? Where are the layout sheets? When is Mr. Z coming back? Has anyone seen the FFA photos? These are just a few quotes that float around the yearbook room. The synthesizing of a yearbook is much more difficult than some realize. Many things must be decided and then implemented. Meeting deadlines, conducting sales campaigns, covering events, composing interesting copy, gathering accurate information, and developing appealing pages are but a few of the actions which must come together to form a school yearbook. Everyone on the staff must be able to work with other staff members in order for things to run smoothly. It is very simple for things to be disorganized in such a task as composing a yearbook. We of the 1983 Buffalo Staff thoroughly hope you enjoy your edition of the school year prein photographs and print. served TRUE FRIENDSHIPS Ally, supporter, sympathizer, buddy, pal, confidant, associate, companion, chum. These are just a few of the terms synonomous with the word friend. In high school, friendships occur in varying degrees ranging from casual acquaintances to boyfriend-girlfriend relationships to trusting alliances in which the most guarded thoughts and information are entrusted to one another. It’s a comforting feeling to know someone exists to whom you can tell everything. Someone who is there to listen when troubles get you down-, someone with whom you can share your most inner thoughts tos someone who will be there when you need someonei someone who will stand by you through it all. Friends exist on all levels but true friends come along maybe once in a lifetime and last forever. Flave you met a true friend yet? You’ll know a true friend when one appears. Are your high school friends temporary or permanent? Only time will tell. What ever happened to blue jeans? Good friends Paula Heiser. Lisa Snack. Tracy Bina, and Angie Ingham show off their new duds on punk rock day. Good friends seem to be less reluctant to act a little crazy around each other. Tina High and Donna Mahoney are two such friends. In addition to being guides for young peoples' progress, teachers must also be friends to students. Lisa Dubois Pearson, Lisa Manning and Mr. Johnson ham for the cam(era) during the homecoming games. LAST FOREVER The closeness of a family is expressed by Tammy Dandridge and her mother and father during Senior recognition night at the final home basketball game. During the course of the average high school student's life there comes a time when going steady seems to be a necessity. Because of some student’s actions resulting from this urge school officials felt the need to establish certain antifraternizing codes which they thought would put a damper on the delicate situation. However, even with these subtle restrictions, the students were still haphazardly intent in showing their feelings for one another. Cries of PDA echoed throughout the halls in an effort to stop such public display of affection. Detentions were issued to violators of the accepted code of behavior. By the middle of the school term the incidents of PDA had slowed down quite a bit. although there were a few exceptions. That title is appropriate for almost any large segment of a population, but it is especially true for the population of Georgetown High School. In G.H.S. on any given day, a person could stroll the hallways and find extroverts and ntroverts, considerate and inconsiderate persons, conformists and nonconformists, groupies and individuals, mature and immature people and the list goes on and on. Portrayed on the facing are just a few of the many different types of kids found in G.H.S. Being a reflection of the community of Georgetown, the high school population consists of persons from a wide variety of backgrounds. Just like life on a large scale, people color G.H.S. JUNIORS The junior class has been described by some to be the easiest class, and by some the hardest class in the high school career. In this indicisive year, students reaffirm their plans for the future. Completely adjusted and set in the groove of their predecessors, the juniors strive for independence and individuality. It is also a year for making all the preparations required for becoming a senior. 35 mu'pal V ICTOW (JO yuan’ I WIN ! CLASS Ok. Greg Burton, what kind of magazine is that your trying to hide? What’s the theme? What band should play? Where should it be held? These are just a few questions the Juniors ask themselves while preparing for the Junior-Senior Prom. This annual event, given by the Juniors for the Seniors, is a major part of the school term. Many hours of preparation and hard work go in to putting on a good prom. There are many problems to be faced. The biggest of these problems is money. Like any big event, money is needed for many things in large amounts. It seems cost increase yearly and adjustments must be made. Seniors in the past didn't have to buy tickets for prom, but because of less money being raised and cost increases. Seniors must now purchase tickets. Even though the class treasury has been accumulating since their Freshman year, there still seems to be a repeating shortage of funds. The fund raisers the Juniors have had this year include: magazine sales, selling pizzas, and an exhibition basketball game between the Channel 3 All-Stars and the Georgetown Jaycees. Although it may be the biggest problem, money is not the only problem. The Juniors are faced with decisions such as deciding what style of napkins, invitations and glasses. They must also pick a photographer. Planning the dance is only the beginning. They must also put together a post-prom program. The Juniors must decide what students will do after the dance. All in all, the Juniors have found that putting on a prom was not as easy as they had hoped it would be. The high school spirit begins to seep into their wary minds and they acquire a sense of belonging. Class rings help to retain this feeling. 43 Troy Eversole spends most of his time dreaming of his love. Kim Carpenter Nancy Yoho. How is it so different from being a Freshman? Well for one. you get the long awaited class rings. Now it’s time to decide what type of ring should I get. what color stone, and what should I get on the sides? Then they come in. Now you finally get to wear it or of course give it to a certain someone. But what else makes being a Sophomore different? How about academically? Well, according to one Sophomore, you usually get stuck with some classes you don’t really want to take, such as alot of english, because the other classes get to pick before you. He said in one of his english classes about 70% or more are Sophomores. Far across the tossing green grass of the football field, the green horde” is preparing for its attack. Oh No!” It’s the greenies!” A little exaggerated? Well, maybe. But, each year the Freshmen (green horde) class fill in the empty slots, left by the seniors, where they immediately adopt the roles of high school students. With bright eyes they dart through the halls, from class to class, dodging the narrow-minded initiators, and adjusting to the new experience of high school life. Intently following the music score. From the fall play to the spring play, the actors, actresses, and various committee members have made great progress in working as a team. The actresses and actors also have fought the greatest fear of acting, stage fright, and have found they could surivive. In the fall play, we had two Mary Miller Junior High Apprentices who worked with the high school group. They were David Gumm and Jami Lovall. Their efforts were -appreciated. Our fall play was a rollicking Western called Desperate Ambrose. Our spring play was the slapstick comedy Everybody Loves Opal. We have appreciated those who have come to see us. LEO CLUB BUILDING TO AND LEARNING TO Mike McHenry’s Building and Trades Carpentry Class learned on the job while improving three properties this year. At the Dick Johnson residence on Guy Avenue in Georgetown, the BT Class installed a new floor in an enclosed porch area. At Elmo Underwood’s home an 8 X 8 enclosed porch was added. The major project the class undertook was the 13 x 30 room addition on the Steve Johnson home at 409 Garfield in Georgetown. The complete job from the ground up was not without its problems. Mr. McHenry fell across several rafters cracking three ribs which slowed but didn’t stop the tiger of a teacher from moving onward. B.T. Carpentry is one class which definitely develops skills to be used in later life. 7} LEARN BUILD 1 left: The first step in building a room addition is the digging of a crawl space. Cake raffles, bake sales, and tutoring of Junior High students are a few activities the NHS members have done this year. The newly hung NHS plaque, which has the names of all the members of NHS. is observed by Shelly Grubb. 87 ACADEMICS In the high school years so many things are important to us students. We have a much more active social life, many more activities to keep up with, and we also must maintain our academic responsibility. Those of us who take studies seriously and at the same time are active in extra curricular happenings find ourselves sometimes exhausted, but the challenge met is rewarding. Academics in school are a lot like life—work and responsibility come before play. As long as we fulfill our obligation first, our play will be more enjoyable. SOCIAL STUDIES Social Studies Department courses help students learn about the world’s past history, current world problems, and debate the future possibilities for man. One year of American History and one quarter of Consumer’s Education along with three semesters of electives are required for graduation. Illinois History, American Government, Research, Sociology, and Geography are taught by Mr. Ray. Current Events, Consumer’s Education, American History, and Accelerated American History are taught by Mr. Steffey. The basic goal is to instill knowledge of and pride in America and to provide the broad background in social sciences necessary to function as an American citizen. A special accelerated American History Class is offered for gifted students who display capabilities to assume responsibility for independent study. Time Magazine is used to keep abreast of current events. The Cable News Network also provides students with up-to-date news. 90 c I Science classes are to help us understand the world around us. Mr. Johnson teaches the Physical Science classes. Mr. Kulbartz teaches Biology I and II. Mr. Wilson teaches Chemistry I and II, Astronomy, Physics, and Upper Level Physics. their goals are to develop the student’s skills and concepts in science. Some special projects are the Prairie Plot in which an original Illinois Prairie area is sustained and developing computer integration with the recently added Apple Computer. Two years of science classes are required at G.H.S. N C PHYSICAL EDUCATION PE classes are state mandated. To provide students with nearly an hour of vigorous exercise the PE staff of Mr. Mills and Mrs. Goodner plan activities including square dancing, badmitton, floor hockey, aerobic dance, softball, flag football, and basketball. 91 Mr. Horlander and Mr. Powell are the teachers in the field of Mathematics. Mr. Horlander teaches Geometry, Computer Math, Trigonometry, and Algebra II. Mr. Powell teaches Algebra I, and General Math. Their goals are to prepare students for either college, technical school or life in general. ENGLISH AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE Language French and Spanish are the two foreign languages offered for students at G.H.S. French I, II, and 111 are taught by Mr. Trahan. Spanish I, II. and III are taught by Mrs. Wilkins. They try to make it as easy as possible for the students to understand, speak, read, and write a foreign language. In addition, each language has its own club which involves the students in foreign language and culture related activities such as trips, ethnic food parties, pinatas and this year a foreign student from Chile was sponsored by Mr. Trahan. The English Department of Georgetown High School is changing the curriculum for next year. Instead of offering quarter-long mini courses, we are going back to the more traditional English I, II, III, IV. The objective of this change is to make the English curriculum a little more consistent. Each level will contain some Grammar, some writing, some speaking, some literature, etc. Hopefully, the students will benefit from this change. Students will primarily be arranged according to grade level. For example, English I will be for freshman, English II for sophomores, English III for juniors, and English IV for seniors. As the curriculum is now set up, some English classes may be taken by students of any grade level. Three years of English will be required for graduation, but a student may choose to take the fourth year. The one advantage is that the students may learn some more of the basics such as spelling, vocabulary, business English, or practical English, etc. Mrs. Moore teaches Home Ec, Foods, Clothing I 2, Adult Living, Child Development, Management of Resources, and Orientation. Her goal is to prepare students for family life. The Building Trades Carpentry class built an addition onto Mr. Johnson’s house, a hog barn, and made improvements on Dick Johnson’s house. They even got paid for the work they were doing. It was a rewarding task for all of them, with a few exceptions like the cold weather which didn’t stop them from finishing the addition. They should be proud of the good work they did. 97 SPORTS A COMPETITIVE SPIRIT AND HONORABLE SPORTSMANSHIP ARE TWO QUALITIES HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES SHOULD COMBINE WITH SKILLS NECESSARY FOR THE SPORT BEING PLAYED. On the heels of a backbuster and dismal I-8 1981 season, this year's team retrooped and regrouped with—returning seasoned seniors and a powerful-workhorse junior back Bam Bam” Willian Perkins to compile a super 7-2 season. Commanding the gridders were Head Coach Steve Sliva, assisted by the General in the Upstairs Booth Dick Powell and the Lanky Linemen’s Leader” Max Call. All the pieces seemed to fit as the magic was woven by the trio of coaches and the hungry team of Buffaloes. Despite losses to state ranked 3-A Clifton’s Comets and Schlarman’s Hilltoppers, (in a game in which penalty flags and footballs seemed to fall at the unusually perfect time for the Toppers) our team dominated the opponents with the icing on the cake coming on a 60-6 blowout of the Tigers in the annual Coal Bucket Clash. The game was highlighted by a 5-touchdown performance by William Perkins, an instant replay” 53 yard TD scamper by Joey Adkins, a 7 of 9 pass completion job by Quarterback Dwayne Hughes and a pro- looking pass reception by end Steve Cornwell. What a year for the seniors who got to see the Coal Bucket Trophy for the first time in their high school career. Assistant Coach Dick Powell. Head Coach Steve Sliva, and Assistant Coach Max Call Jerry Tuggle holds the Coal Bucket Trophy during a pep assembly. 102 Bam-Bam” Perkins Lives Up To His Name William Bam-Bam” Perkins, only a junior, was a major factor in the Coal Bucket victory. Scoring five touchdowns, Perkins set a school record. William scored the Buff’s first three touchdowns on runs of 20. 6, and 5 yards. Perkins finished the season with 1,123 yards rushing, 18 touchdowns and two 2-point conversions for a total of 112 points during the 1982 season. This was Williams first year playing for Georgetown and we ail hope next year will be as good as the first. COACH’S COMMENTS The 1982 football season was one of the best Georgetown has had in the past few years finishing with the best defensive stats in our conference. They allowed fewest points, total yards, and total rushing yards. The team set a record in the coal bucket game winning by 54 points, 60-6. Georgetown's Gentleman Coach” Boggess, Johnson, Grider, Morris, Learnard, Redmond, McCloud, Behm, Murray, Cornwell, Perkins, Towns, and Tuggle are among the many names that will always have a place in the memories and the scrapbooks of Bob McMurray. These are the young men along with the others who are helped by Mr. Mac to win two regional championships, two second place county finishes, a consolation championship in 1982, and permanent possession of the John Dickson Award for Sportsmanship, along with a won-loss record of 90-71 for his varsity coaching years. What do I find most memorable about Coach McMurray? His being my friend and fellow worker since 1966 when he taught English and coached sports at the then Goergetown Junior High School. Next, the marathon basketball game that lasted 24 hours where the final score was 1,178 to 1,136 and bodies were laying all over the gym. Summer basketball classes with gradeschoolers running all over the gym. The defeat of the Terrible Towels” also very proud when Mr. Mac was selected to coach the Eastern Illinois All-Stars against the Indiana All-Stars and won 107-96. In my mind, Mr. Mac’s greatest achievement is the winning of the sportsmanship award for three years in a row to receive permanent possesion for Georgetown High School and for himself the respect of his players, fellow coaches, and coworkers and the title Gentleman Coach of Vermilion County”. Well, I didn’t know what to do with all of the money but I finally decided to buy an airplane and look for the graduated class of ”83”. First of all, I went to the high school office to see if they could help me locate some of the people. As I walked in the door, I heard a familiar voice say Will you please stand for the pledge?” Was it an echo? No, it was Patty Lyday. I couldn't believe it. She showed me that there was more of the class of 83” working there too. LeAnn Parker is the band director of the 2003 Marching Band. All those years of being Drum Major paid off. Mike Bonomo is sponsoring the FFA. Kyle Coburn is taking Spanish again because of a guilty conscience from not trying hard enough the first time. Kim Troxel is the librarian at the Jr. High. Her nickname is Mrs. Sprouls. Paula Heiser is now a full-time secretary, but she has moved up in the office. She now gets to take lunch tickets. Jerry Tuggle is now the football and basketball coach. When I was leaving, I passed Penny McFarland and Steve Francis in the hallway. They were visiting the school, and let me tell you, they still have the same urges in the halls as they had when they were in school. I saw Troy Pate at the High School also. They say he comes back every day at lunchtime to entertain the students with his radio (only now he has a hearing aid). As I left the school in my car, I passed Dwanye Hatton, He was crusing down by Donna Fouse’s house and laying on the horn. I stopped by Jerry’s Oasis and found Eric Cunningham living up to his favorite saying— in Heaven there is no beer, so we'd better drink it here.” As I was leaving there, I saw William Dowers in his new car. It was shaped like a horse with a cowboy on itl Then I saw a sign with Jeff Haussey’s name on it. It was advertising his new doctors office. He specializes in knee injuries. Then I stopped in a photography shop that is owned by Shelly Grubb or should I say Legros. She now has her own dark room, but with a new piece of equipment—Troy. I then saw Angie Ingham and David Behm going into the telephone company—Most likely to pay for all those long distance phone calls charged so long ago. I saw Lisa Barker and Kevin Kupcik arguing with Mr. Kelley. I think they were protesting their divorce of their marriage in Adult Living Class. Matt Serd and Amy Black are now married and they own their own wrecking company. Mike Schmink was crusing in his Ford. Chris Sherman is now married to Troy Nimrick. When I saw her she had a black eye but it wasn’t from Troy. No, sir! She had just been practicing twirling her rifle. Later I was driving down the Old Dam Road and saw Rae Ann Smith. I think she was looking for something there. I found Brenda Burress and Zeke Yoho sitting in the Library, looking at newspapers. I stopped by the CSQ for lunch and found a few people there: Brian and Steve Cornwell were reminiscing about beating Westville 66-6 in the Coal Bucket Game of 1982. Sherrie High was there with Steve, and now she is saying Oooooooh I had a rough week! instead of weekend. Beth Wadsworth was there. She is now a well known chemist. Gary Readnour's hair was still in place even though it was scarce. Dwayne Hughes and Jennifer Lamar were trying to decide whether to break up or make up. Janet Phillips and Jerry Martin were holding a burping contest.—It is still hard to determine the winner. Harold Maskel, Tim Maxwell, Bobby Tintorri, and Joe Maskel were sitting at a table. Joe was still talking about his most remembered moment—June 3, 1982. When I walked outside, I saw Aneita Sprouls and a friend looking at the dent in her dad’s car, saying My Dad will never notice a dent that small. Will he? I saw Ron Russian enjoying his favorite past time—watching little kids wreck their bicycles. When I had finished in Georgetown, I went to the airport. All the years of hard study and diligent work are beginning to pay off as we prepare to depart on the perilous voyage of adulthood. Throughout the year, we’ve scurried about making the final preparations for college or whatever else lies ahead for us. Out of our graduating class will come some of the Doctors, Scientists, Lawyers, Writers, Musicians, and many other chosen professions who will help shape the world of the future. As the echoes of laughter fade from the hallways and the graduates of the class of 1983 sail into adult life, we will smile at the familiar walls which sheltered us and nurtured us for the most tedious and important four years of our lives, and leave new individuals filled with aspirations and hopes for a happy life. Good-bye G.H.S. we won’t forget you soon. The Class of 1983” SENIOR Matt Serd attempts to catch up to Rae Ann Smith in a Go Cart race. Burton Perkins. Dwayne Hughes. A hearty thanks to both classes. 155 EDITOR’S PAGE The yearbook staff has worked hard throughout the year selling ads. taking pictures, and laying out pages, to produce tbe 1983 Buffalo. With the addition of a darkroom built by the Building Trades class we were able to produce more pictures this year. Many thanks are to be returned for all who supported us in the making of our yearbook. First I would like to thank the businesses which placed ads in our book. Their support is what enables us to begin our work. Next, I would like to thank the students, faculty, and administration of GHS for their patience, cooperation, and support throughout the year, that made this book possible. A special thank you goes to Mr. Don Zimmerman our representative for his help whenever he was called on. Lastly I would like to thank our advisor, Mr. Steve Johnson for taking the time to sponsor the yearbook class. His guidance and experience in photography has helped us a great deal in the last two years. With this book I hope you will be able to look back on your high school years with pleasant memories. Thanks again to all who supported us, and to the yearbook staff for working together through the good times and the difficult times to produce this book.
