KERCHEVAL The 1982 Buffalo is dedicated to a man who has taken the time to be a friend, teacher, and band director. He has touched almost every student at G.H.S. in some way, whether it’s been through teaching them, cheering them on, or listening when they have problems. Throughout his career as Band Director, he has brought the Marching Band to receive many awards. (Including a first place finish at the Watseka Invitational in 1981). The Band has also received the Vermilion County Marching Championship for the past four years. For all he has accomplished and for all he has done for us, we dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Vance Kercheval! How much will that be? Eighty dollars for a class ring!” This was the response of many sophomores when order packets for class rings were passed out. It cost $66 to $130 for a girl’s ring and $70 to $170 for a boy’s ring, a price which has nearly doubled in the last ten years. The rings would probably be worn during the next two years or so, then stored away in a safe place. They seem to be a necessity though, and the dignity of owning one was something most sophomores couldn’t do without. When the long-awaited rings finally came, there was much excitement among the sophomores. Everyone seemed to be running around comparing rings. “I think it’s a fun thing to have because you’ll have it for years after you graduate, and if you get the kind with stuff on the sides, it serves as a memory of what you achieved in high school,” said Jane Sprouls. They are a very close knit bunch and they seem to have a deep concern for one another. It seems whenever one of them is troubled there are always a few more sophs around to listen and help ease the pain. The other classes see this and respect them for it. Another one of their unique qualities is their school spirit and support which was shown by complete domination of the spirit stick at nearly every pep session held. They are a very eager bunch of persons and it’s certain they have a prosperous future awaiting them. There are new routines, social events, and people for the Greenys to get accustomed to. with the upperclassmen always around reminding them of their first year status. Many upperclassmen can remember how it was beginning high school. They were apprehensive about it, but at the same time excited. That is also how this year’s Freshmen feel. The Yearbook Staff asked many Freshmen questions concerning the change from jr. high school. They all seem to agree that high school is much better because of the choice of classes and the chance to make more friends. There is one major complaint of the Freshmen though, the size of the lockers. “It’s hard to stuff everything into half the size you are used to, says Freshman Chelle Cebuluski. Janet Williams, Donnie Clay 68 CLUBS DRAMA CLUB This year of our dramatic life at GHS we attempted more difficult plays than we had previously. We again found how important it is to coordinate the efforts of the technical staff and performers. We realized even more the truth of the Director's words: “You are a team You are all needed to have a successful play.” We started the season with the thriller DRACULA. Then we finished our season with another violent mysterious play TEN LITTLE INDIANS. In this play Junior High students participated. They were very cooperative. One Junior High member, Ellen Spencer, even performed in an arm cast. The Junior High students, now called Junior High Apprentices, were Tye Anderson, Chris Anderson, Tonya Digby, Lisa Kulbartz, Carl Manning, Ellen Spencer, and Yvonne Wise. This fall we will start our third year. We invite you to attend one or both plays. We will do our best to amuse, surprize, or mystify you. 1981-82 Drama Members Kim Troxel Ed Cross Penny Miethe Debbie Mullins President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Kim Andrews Marguerite Barker Roger Biggs Danatra Brown Ed Carlock Kristie Carlton Latokia Cash Chelle Cebulski Ken Cheek Christina Cruea Candy Dunavan Janet Edwards Dennis Eldridge Mark Ford Steve Ford Greg Grant Tina Haney Becky Hall James Howe Standing: Steve Ford. There are “pros” and “cons” to consider in the making of this decision. Some of the “pros” are: the on the job training the experience, and of course, the extra bucks earned. Assuming responsibility and establishing reliability are two qualities which are to be developed in this program. The building of a good reputation as a worker can be made also. On the negative side are: missing half a day of school and the activities therein, not being with friends in the last year of High School, and missing half a day of association with them. Some have stated, “you have the rest of your life to work, but you have only one year, one chance, to be a senior.” When it gets down to weighing these facts, the final decision must be left to the individual. FUTURE FARMERS The Georgetown FFA conducted many activities throughout the school year. In the fall the chapter held an Invitational Livestock Judging Contest and Walk for Mankind. During December, members sponsored several Christmas programs for the community. Spring activities included a consignment sale, FFA Week, and the farming program. Chapter members attended the National and State FFA Conventions. Contest teams participated in livestock, crops, parlimentary procedures, dairy, meat, milk, farm management horse, poultry, and ag mechanics contests. Members also entered individual and chapter awards programs and received many awards. The chapter was a National Gold Emblem Chapter for the 8th consecutive year and we are hopeful to continue this tradition. 74 CLUBS Hard at work for a profitable harvest. Benjamin A Teacher and A Friend Mr. Robert L. Benjamin was born on August 9, 1934. Serving Community Unit District 3 for a total of 19 years, he taught various classes including English I, Speech, Modern History, Research, and what he is most known for, American History, as well as driving a bus for many years. Mr. Benjamin sponsored the Senior class and went on Senior trips as bus driver and chaperone. In addition to previous duties Mr. Benjamin served the community as a minister at the Pleasant Mound Church of Christ. Mr. Benjamin was a dedicated man with a potential to help many seniors through one of the most challenging years of their lives. He would never let a person give up if he knew one had the ability to go on. He was truly a great man and will be greatly missed by the students and staff of Georgetown High School and the community as well. The last few winters have been unusually cruel to us. Our school was closed 5 days because of the weather, and driving conditions when school resumed were considerably less than ideal with first the snow, then the cold and the wind, then the ice. Stalled cars, stuck vehicles, frozen pipes and massive migrations to grocery stores were the norm in January of 1982. Early dismissals were quite frequent as were fender benders, falls and fantasies of summer. Oh well, we survived the ordeal and the weather gave us something to talk about and a little more time to get to know our families and loved ones better in these fast paced times. ,r J, « ‘•v£ 'Jfc tr- '' Mil MISCELLANEOUS TRIVIATICS Costs, Fads, Favorites, Etc. 1982 Prices FOODS AVERAGE PRICES McDonalds Hamburgers 60c Hamburgers 95c Can of Pop 45-50C Shakes $1.00 Lg. This year's squad returned only two Senior lettermen from last year—Guard David Behm and Center Nathan Brigham. Although the Buffs ended the year with a 10-15 overall record, I was pleased with many of the things I saw. First, I think that the team as a whole improved considerably throughout the season. Finally, the team was in most every game that we played. The outlook for next season, in my opinion, is a bright one. We will return twelve f lavers from this year’s Varsity squad plus several sophomores from the Fresh-Soph team tnink that we can look forward to a successful roundball season next year here a G.H.S. SPLISH, SPLASH! These were familiar sounds to the 1982 Seniors as we had the time of our lives on the go-karts, bumper cars, and water slides in the Ozarks. Following tradition at G.H.S., the Seniors went to the Lake of the Ozarks for our Senior trip. We stayed in the beautiful Kalfran Lodge located on Lake Ozark. The days at the resort were usually filled with swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, sunbathing, and spending quarters in the game room. At night we returned into town to brave the go-karts and bumper cars, and then back to the lodge for dancing at the disco. Shopping trips were plentiful enabling everyone a chance to get lots of souvenirs. On the last night, the Seniors visited the Ozark Opry where we heard some great, down home, Ozark Mountain Music. Of course there were many cases of sunburns, but, what’s a vacation without a sunburn!?! The Yearbook was a total group effort. First of all, a thank you goes to the faculty and administration of the G.H.S. Without their cooperation this yearbook couldn’t have been. Next, we would like to thank Sudlow Studios for their work on Senior pictures and club pictures. A special thank you goes to Mr. Steve Johnson for giving of his time for taking most of the yearbook’s pictures. Lastly, we would like to thank our very important advertisers, the people of our community, and the students of G.H.S. for the cooperation and support. We hope that this yearbook will help keep fresh the best years of your life; your high school years. As we end this year of hard—but fun work we would like to say good luck to next years staff and for the staffs to come.
