; ai s °inffna ' ‘ 9L6I Mr. Mac The 1976 Buffalo is dedicated to a man who has backed our class ever since our days in Jr. High. He has been more than just a teacher to us, he has been an inspiration and a person to whom we could always turn for guidance and assistance, knowing he would always be willing to do all he could to help us. This is but a small token of appreciation to a man who is and always will be irreplacable, Robert Mc-Murray. The class as a whole made many changes in G.H.S. in the four years that they were there. They originated the basketball marathon as a fundraising project, they made it possible for juniors to select their own style of class rings, and many seniors rallied on the school referendum issue, and encouraged citizens to vote yes. The class is thankful to G.H.S. and wishes to express it’s thanks by leaving the money for a flag staff and base to be erected in front of the school, upon completion of the new school building. I will miss all of you. } Ruth Steele 32 Mr. Delmotte, Principal Periodically people are called upon to make sacrifices beyond what has been normal for others in the past. There is no rightness nor wrongness for it; it is something that must be done because it has to be. Such sacrifices can be great or small in comparison, but each has equal merit. Seniors of 1976 have been called upon for sacrifices and have responded with gracious acceptance of that responsibility- You are to be commended for your efforts, and the helpful and healthy attitude you displayed in handling the situation for this year. The season started with two non-conference wins and the Buffaloes started conference action with two losses, one a tragic 7—6 loss which eventually eliminated the Buffaloes from state playoff contention. During that game, 3 Georgetown Touchdowns were called back. Then the Buffaloes regrouped and won the next five games. The highlight of the season was a homecoming victory over previously undefeated and state-ranked Chatham Glenwood. 58 Front row: T. C. Sloan, A. Korb, C. Sprouls, W. Cravens, G. McDowell, C. This year’s Frosh-Soph basketball team was made up of eight sophomores and seven freshmen. Since there was a shortage of overall height, the Jr. Buffs were forced to use their quickness and aggressiveness to win ball games. Their full-court press and their running offense provided a great deal of excitement to Georgetown basketball. Georgetown fans expect to see many of these young men excel in basketball for the next two years. Georgetown’s Frosh basketball team was blessed this year with a scrappy, never-say-die desire to win ball games. The team showed an aggressive defense and a lot of hustle. Their lack of size enabled them to play a deliberate, ball control offense. Many of these players will perform next year for the Frosh-Soph or Varsity team. Kneeling: Mr. McMurray. Standing: J. Chess Team Chess is open to all students of G.H.S. who wish to play chess. Interested students are taught the rules of the game and are allowed to play using the equipment the school provides. More serious students are invited to try out for the Chess team. A list of qualifications for being a member of the Chess team is given to the students at the beginning of the year and from those students qualifying, the Chess team is chosen. At any time during the year any player is invited to try to match his skills with the top five players, and if successful, the challenger may take his place on the first team. This year the G.H.S. Chess team participated in a series of eight matches which were part of a schedule as presented by the newly organized Mid Eastern Illinois Chess League, consisting of Georgetown, Ridge Farm, Rankin and Westville High Schools. The ’75-’76 Girls’ Softball team showed a great deal of improvement over their first season. Although losing their games, the scores were close and the girls learned much from their experience. This group of girls were very enjoyable and hard workers. Our one senior, Cindy Carroll, was named most valuable player. This was her first year, and she played an excellent second base. Kathy Lanter had the highest batting average with a 608. We are looking for her “BIG CLUB’’ next season. 70 Kneeling: T. Nale, K. Hewitt, D. Pearson, C. Carroll, C. Lanter, C. Pribble, C. Call, M. Performances were somewhat inconsistent as the girls continued to gain experience in a relatively new sport at GHS. The community has taken an interest in the girls, as demonstrated by increased attendence at home games. Next year promises to be even better one, as all but two letter-winners will be returning. The girls did work very hard, even to the point of sacrificing their Easter Vacation. There were several outstanding students, some of whom even made the “Girl’s Honor Roll” published by the Commercial News. The team record was not impressive, but next year should prove to be successful due to the experience of this year’s team and students coming up from a strong Junior High track program. Juniors won first place in float competition with the theme “Buffalo Stampede”. Seniors placed second with Soph’s and Greenies finishing behind. After the parade there was a snake dance that wound through the streets and some buildings of Georgetown. Friday night was the victory over Chatham-Glenwood, and the crowning of the Queen at halftime. The Homecoming festivities came to a climax with a dance to honor our Queen and celebrate our victory. The couples danced to the music of “B.J. and the Initials” in the gym. Student Council sponsored the dance “It’s Magic”, which everyone enjoyed. 81 The Homecoming game of the 1975 season was a very important and very hard fought game for the Buffaloes. The opposition was Chatham-Glenwood, who came to Georgetown undefeated, highly rated in the state rankings, averaging thirty-six points a game while yielding eight point six points a game. The Buffaloes played a near-perfect ball-game to win nineteen to zero and notch one of the most impressive victories in years for a Georgetown team. 82 She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that's best of dark and bright Meet in her aspect and her eyes: Thus mellow’d to that tender light Which heaven to gaudy day denies. a. It was named a “Gold Emblem” chapter, one of only 14 named in the state, and judged the third best chapter in the state. It also one of 8 Illinois chapters to receive a “National Gold Emblem” award. The Georgetown chapter this year was very active in community service and very involved in community projects. The Walk for Mankind, the Heart Fund drive, Santa Claus house, Santa Claus service, Community children’s Christmas party, Christmas parade and Christmas for Kids were all F.F.A. sponsored events. The chapter won 10 sectional foundation awards out of 28 possible, and Joe Andrews, Laura Jackson and Chris Collom were state degree recipients. Joe Andrews was named Section 18 Star Agri-Businessman and Chris and Laura are the first girls to earn the State degree in Section 18. 88 FFA Officers Pres........... V. Pres........ Sec............ The editors along with several other students found time in lieu of study hall and scheduled themselves for the yearbook room. With this time available to work on the book the staff turned their attention to more detail in certain aspects of the book. Not only did they produce a good yearbook but they put the extras into it as you can see. This is the first year in my 8 years as advisor that 1 did not have to do about 1 3 of the book myself. The Donkey Basketball game on November 3rd was sponsored by NHS and was a huge success. Two members, Don Snider and Tom Lopinski, were chosen by an NHS teacher committee to represent the school as semi-finalists in the National Honor Society scholarship competition. Initiation and the initiation party were held on April 1st. April 3, NHS sopnsored a car wash. Some changes took place in NHS in the ’75-76 school year. NHS is an important club in GHS and it is an honor to be a member. At initiation ceremonies, Mrs. Mary Miller was awarded an Honorary Membership to honor her retirement. The last responsibility of the Student Senate for the weekend was the dance, which was held in the High School Gym the following evening, featuring, “B.J. and the Initials.” Another responsibility was showing the movie, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” It was held at the Junior High Gym and shown to the Jr. High and High School. Their last responsibility was bringing three assemblies to the school to be shown to the student body. The dance was in the High School Gym, which was beautifully decorated, and “Griffin” performed for the evening. Post Prom was after the dance and filled the wee hours of the morning at the Illini Rollerskating Rink, and Nelson’s School of Swimming where we were suprised to find “Griffin”, providing Music To Swim By. The Seniors would like to thank the Juniors for a wonderful evening, which they will remember always. Ginger crowns Karen, and The ’76 King and Queen reign over the evening’s festivities. 109 no Post Prom.............. 112 life This year’s Slave Day was the last money making project for the Senior Class. The auctioning of seniors and faculty members was done by Terry Smith and Pat Bomgardner. Throughout the day, the “slaves” could be seen washing cars, cleaning rooms, pushing objects across the floor with their noses, and various other chores. Interesting, to say the least. 113 Assemblies Some very good assemblies were presented to the student body at GHS this year. The Jr. class brought a hypnotist that performed to the student body and again in the evening to the public. A musical program was given by a group of students from William Penn College in Iowa, and a group of dramatists portraying family problems. A safety program was presented by FFA and through Drivers Education, a policeman about traffic safety. 114 115 Science Fair Overall, there was not a very good turnout for Science Fair this year. The projects that were submitted were exceptionally well done, and the students put a lot of work into them. We hope that next year’s Science Fair will have more participants, and that the annual Science Fair will be a major activity in the future at G.H.S. Tltis year’s Grand Prize winners were Sabrina Jones and Vicki Ellis. Oxygen Intake of Rats” was the project. 116 Honors Day At the end of the school year, a day is set aside for awards of leadership, achievements, and gifts to be presented. We, the Senior Class, will next year’s freshman class to all of you. GOOD LUCK!! 1)9 Class Prophecy It is the year 2001 and the scene is the 25th class reunion for the Class of 1976. It is our intent to give you a running commentary as the class members enter, or in some cases, to just fill you in on what they are doing now. The 1st to enter and the 1st to leave, due to lack of ventilation were some of the following members of the I I A: Terry Smith, Joe Andrews, Rick Barker, Tim Galey, Ron Dixon, Kim Shrout, Calvin Smith and Ken Vice. Buffalo Joe Andrews, arrived in his 1967 red pick-up with corn stickers, and hauling the aforementioned group as well as two pigs, a duck, and a goosalo, which is a buffalo that was goosed at birth and never recovered. Next in line to arrive and the last to leave we’re sure is the 1976 Yearbook staff, who spent the entire night trying to get rid of 2726 extra yearbooks they ordered by mistake. The reunion was held at Yankee Branch cabin. Joe was often heard saying during the night, “One more for the road.” Greg Pribblc, now owner of the Georgetown Band arrived. Greg gained his position when a stick of dynamite exploded at a Thanksgiving dinner for the Family. Greg, the only survivor later commented, “I didn’t know it was loaded”, as he streaked by. Don Black was made head bag boy over Tim Brooks when he gained 150 pounds, drove a Cadillac, and changed his last name to Billdilli after his recent marriage. Cindy Carroll and Mary Mockaitis, after receiving their Ph.D.’s, now run a chain of hardware stores and polish sausage stands, to which Steve Mills provides the toad legs filler. They really saw the light! Chris Collom had the shortest distance to travel as she still works as a student secretary at the high school. The people who had the longest distance to travel were Charlie McCloud and Alan Turman, who were teaching pigmys in Africa to play basketball. Jean and Jeri Thompson, plus their manager Ralph Gray, have started the first soul food chain of restaurants. Doug Weaver, still riding his cycle is referred to as sleczy rider. Pat Bomgardner, former member of the L.P.B.L. Partiers, is now a Budhist monk in Ridgefarm. Brian Mills and Carla Rogers enter as the first married couple. Brian now continues his artistic work by stamping out bolts at G.M. and playing the piano during the summer. Laurie Wiming works in a pickle factory. Gale Hoskins still works at Lakcview, but specializes in sponge baths for the rich and proper placement of bed pans. Brett Quirk spends his free time practicing up his baseball talents at Mark Snack’s house. Randy Kdenburn is now the only token white left in the American Baseball League. Kevin Lewis was found tip toeing through the tulip bulbs at Burgoy-nes again with a ucclele, before he attended the reunion. The nights entertainment will be provided by Denise Behm and Pam Patterson who graduated from Pom Pon to Bum Bum. The act is billed as Pitter-Patter Pam and Fireplug. Steve Bender and Tom Lopinski entered as Bionic Man and Bionic Woman. Cheryl Ringer is in the Washer-Dryer Business. Shercc High, indictive of her name, just floated across the floor. Paul Buyno has replaced Bonnie Dawson as town-crier. Lordcl Rollins and Linda Spears are both happily married. Dennis Winslow has continued his vocation as a professional woods shop student, and now makes solid oak furniture for Randy Reynolds to destroy with his brute force. Don Sanders has had both hands amputated and replaced with hands of steel, in hopes that then he can finally beat Mr. Millikcn and Mr. Call at the same time in handball. Mike Steeples has joined the professional auto racing circuit (when he can stay awake). Rick McDaniel came tonight only after he lost the finals in the National Go-cart Relays. Mike Dalide has moved up to 3rd M.V.P. with Jamie. John Ellis now cans Budwciser for Andy Granitelli. Cindy Hepburn now holds the record for the most broken bones. Debbie Holcm and Teresa Kern still wander the halls 25 years later, during class. Jeff Julian is now President of D.P. (Dopiers Anonymous) and the K.K.K. (Kooks, Klutz, and Knuckleheads). Rick Lamar changed his napie to Antonio and now makes far out pizza and brownies. Brenda Murray made it big in the fashion world today by showing up in a buffalo hide hat. That was it. Just the hat. Tom Simmonds, deceased, died from suffocation when the spit valve backed up on his coronet. Chuck Smith has started his own wrestling team, after the birth of his 1 2th son. Lee Smitlcy is still a private after 20 years of service on latrine duty. JaNcll Stark and Carol Stambaugh still terrorize the streets of Olivet by mugging dogs and cats for their flea collars. Richard Donaldson is still ‘‘Dinking” around. Scott Taylor could not attend, because he was injured when he slipped on a Dixie cup. He was rushed to the hospital by his girlfriend, Dixie. Chris Gleichman, following in his father’s footsteps, now runs a chain of drug stores and is fondly referred to as “Dopey”.
