II THE JUNIOR CLASS OF '39 The story of the Junior Class of thirty-nine of the High School of the City of Georgetown, County of Vermilion, State of Illinois is in this wise: It came to pass in September, nineteen hundred thirty-eight, approximately ninety and four seekers of knowledge started forth in this land of learning. Some came from the class of sophomores and some came from far cities. Now it so happened that among the rulers in this land to which they had come was one known as Miss Alice E. Rees, a professoress of much wisdom: and at the beginning of this third year she spoke unto them, Go gather ye in a body and organize yourselves into a class that ye may gain strength and that your courage may wax hot . And it came to pass that years before schools had decided to participate in many sports. As this third year of the students, now members of the junior class, advanced they proved that they are lovers of sports. George Bromley was elected captain of the basketball team and Mac Wenskunas as football captain. Also the girls have shown their colors in the Girls Athletic Association with Margaret Woodruff as secretary. Now it so happened that the juniors have sponsored the school page of the Georgetown news for some time. This year they would like to think it was more successful than ever before, thanks to their editor, Beryl LeCount. Now, therefore, the juniors have banqueted the seniors from the beginning of time. Money must be obtained before anyone can be banqueted. So the juniors raised money by selling candy and sponsoring the popularity contest. The winners The Junior Class turned to murder, mystery, and seance meetings as a theme for their class play which was given on November 18. Ellen Reagan as a spirit-medium did much with her intense acting to sustain the mysterious atmosphere of the play. The entire cast of seventeen juniors presented their characters in a way which held the interest of the audience throughout the elaborate plot. THE THIRTEENTH CHAIR of the contest were a senior and a junior, Clara Judd and Bennett Newlin, respectively. If ye then, being good or evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children why didn't you take them to the Junior Play? It was scarey, creepy, romantic, stupendous. The Cast did a very wonderful presentation in giving The Thirteenth Chair. Raise up thy voice and shout thy praise from the desk tops. For it has come to pass that the juniors are passing on to a new land of learning, a new Canaan, and a new field of battle. NEWSTAFF Seventeen years ago in 1922 the first high school paper was published in Georgetown. For two years the paper, in the form of a magazine, was called the Purple and White . This magazine-paper published once each month, under the direction of Miss Rees, took the place of an annual. In 1924 the magazine took the form of a regular paper made up of four pages published every three weeks. It sent representatives to the Illinois High School Press Association and won recognition in that organization. At the end of seven years this was discontinued because of the depression. For four years the school had no news sheet until in 1935, when the local paper gave the juniors permission to use a page in the weekly publication, calling it the Georgetown High School News. This year the paper has been successfully published by a group of juniors with Beryl Le Count acting as the editor-in-chief. Walter Davis, Barbara Kerans and Ellen Reagan were made assistant editors and make-up associates. Mary Sanders was appointed humor editor, Wayne Felgenhauer sports editor, and the other members were assigned beats as reporters. The staff has taken keen interest in the work this year. Beryl Le Count and Walter Davis represented the paper at the Press Association at Champaign. 16 Every Friday the reporterSrSdn be seen scurrying around, ft eir paper and pencils in hand, trying to get more news'about sports, classes, musical enteidainments, dramatics, scanaal and school humor. This material, revised and corrected, i iven to Miss Clark and the advanced typing class who convecfc.it into neatly typewritten copy. On Monday the editor and his make-up staff arrange the material on the page, and on Thursday it appears in the Georgetown News. BUFFALO STAFF TOP ROW—Doris Wells. These girls are working to glorify their teens as their club name implies. An opportunity was given to the club to exhibit their skill in the 1938 Fall Festival and many girls won prizes. Blue ribbons were won by Celia Tintorri in first year sewing and Erma Moffitt in second year sewing. Celia also won the grand prize. Each year Miss Wolfe, the instructor, attends the State Convention. This year, the Glorious Teens sent the president and vice-president to represent their club. The girls also enjoy many social events during the year, the most important of which are potluck dinners at noon, an annual skating party with the F. F. A. Club. IE and a Xmas party for their mothers. Miss Wolfe also plans to take the advanced girls on a field trip sometime before the school term ends. SENIOR BAND During the summer fifty-two members of the Georgetown High School Band worked in a summer school of music, and gave concerts on the square every Thursday night. In August they competed in the State Band Contest at Springfield and won second place in class B bands. Each student was awarded a medal, and the school received a silver trophy. In the school year music was furnished by the members at all football and basketball games. They broadcasted over WDAN in April. Music letters were given for the earning of 875 points. In the graduating class of 39 five seniors were awarded letters. Billy Clark won the medal for the most points earned this year. On April 2, the band played in the annual music concert, Chimes of Spring . They will also play for Baccalaureate and Commencement. The officers of the Band are as follows: President, O. C. Burd: Assistant Conductor, Udell Wolff; Social Chairman, Margaret Woodruff; Librarian, Winifred Haworth. 20 THE DRAMATIC CLUB The Dramatic Club reorganized this year to supervise the dramatic work done in extra curricular activities. The club did not have regular meetings. All students who joined the Dramatic Club had participated in a play, a speech in an assembly program, or had represented the school in a speech contest. Those students in the speech contests this year were Elizabeth Campbell, Ellen Reagan and George Howlett. Elizabeth won second place for the humorous reading event in Vermillion County, and first place in the District contest in extempore speaking. Ellen won first in verse reading in the county and first in the sub-district. For the last two years the Dramatic Club has given an assembly program at Christmas time. This year a one-act play, Christmas Trimmings , by Marguerite Phillips, was presented. Red Carnations was another one-act play presented by the club for the basketball banquet. Donald Naudzius, George Howlett and Mary Sanders were in the cast and the presentation proved to be very clever. BOTTOM ROW—Wilma Newlin, Frances Lowandowski, Louise Richards. MIXED ENSEMBLE In the spirit of the French troubadours sixteen valiant choristers banded together to blend their voices into the finer harmonies of song. With Udell Wolff as their accompanist, four sturdy basses and four bright tenors matched their rich voices with an octet of maidens whose beautiful soprano and alto tones completed the choir. As each Tuesday evening returned they assembled with their conductress, Aneita Hill, and their manager, Evelyn Roberts, to further their knowledge of the art of music. The hearts of many of life's weary soldiers were gladdened when they sang at the Veterans' Administration Facility. In the gay tones of spring they cheered their audience at the spring festival and even allowed the world to listen in from WDAN. These young people count it their greatest pleasure to carol and sing. FESTIVAL CHORUS Forth from the inhabitants of this great citadel of Georgetown High School hath come about one-third of its citizens, one hundred, twenty-five strong, to give forth their voices in song. For lo! in the twelfth month on the sixth day a county festival was to be brought forth in Westville after the traditional manner of bygone years. Here they acquitted themselves with honor and distinction. As time passed, these lovers of music and the arts moved into the second phase of their sojourn in the land of learning. And as the months began to forecast the spring season, they again displayed their talents to all the citizens of the globe who lived thereabout. The Chimes of Spring sounded forth in melodic strains the joys and beauty of the spring season. The sturdy voices of the handsome young men and the lyric beauty of feminine voices charmed the hearts of the listeners. Now, in this fine Company were three maidens of exceptional genius, namely, Udell Wolff. Dorothea Ann Sandy, and Betty Stephenson, who at all times gave their loyal and devoted service to their leader in accompanying this great choir with instrumental harmonies. Sincere devotion to choral art has brought rewards of merit to twenty-five whose names are herewith presented: Harvey Alexander, O. C. Burd, John Paradiso, Billy Colvin, George Ellis, Leonard Gattling, Charles Jones, Bruce Morgan, Donald Naudzius, Joseph Zielinski, Henry Zielinski, Marjorie Brooks, Elizabeth Campbell, Clara Cravens, Jean Dermond, Marjorie Hale, Imojean Hallett, Margaret Reid, Louise Richards, Evelyn Roberts, Hazel Sanders, Lois Sollars, Ruth Trussell, Betty Wells, Doris Wells. 4 LIBRARY STAFF STUDENT COUNCIL At the close of school each day, a crowd of students may be seen in the library selecting and checking out books. Our library continues to furnish interesting fiction and non-fiction books, a number of good reference works, and a varied assortment of magazines. During the year l938-'39 the library was operated by twelve girls, which was half the number used in former years. An effort was made to center the responsibility in a few dependable people and thereby achieve greater efficiency. BOTTOM ROW—Elizabeth Campbell. Audrey Fleming. Barbara Kerans, Miss Paul. An excellent field general, punter, passer, runner, and tackier—just one of those boys that come along once in a life time. Was Captain of All-State team. Hope to see him on the All-American team in 1942. CHARLES JONES—Left-halfback. Senior. A fine runner, good safety man and a good blocker in the open. Kicked the winning point at Gary. WALLY POWERS—Wing back. Senior. A sturdy boy who loves football. Liked to block and catch punts. Played well at the defensive guard position. Fine attitude on and off the field. HENRY PEAVLER—Quarterback. Senior. Third letter in football. Carried the ball only once a year. Loved to block and did the job well—will be hard to replace—for blockers are hard to find—most boys want to let Henry do it. LOUIS LOPINSKI—Left end. Senior. An exceptional pass catcher and defensive halfback. Tackled by ear. Had two loves—Typing and snuff—just the same he will long be remembered for his pass interceptions and long runs. HORACE PAYNE—Right end. Senior. Played end with his feet, hands and head— and folks that's something. Don't sell this boy's ability short for he is one swell defensive end. Recovered the opening kick-off at Westville and crooned the remainder of the game. Honorable All-State mention. JOE STIMAC—Left tackle. Junior. Big boy with reluctant tendencies. One more 28 year to go—should be a stand out next year if he de :ides to get tough. DULY ROOK—Right tackle. Senior. Weighed only 165 but hit with every pound of it every time. One of those fellows whose courag s far surpasses his ability. Won sportsmanship trophy which is a tribute to his ettitude and any freshman girl will give further references if desired. BILL RICE—Right tackle. Senior. A small, quiet, fellow who made no flourishing demonstrations while making few mistakes. A stead t defensive player whose position will be hard to fill. JOHN GALYEN—Center. Junior. A big rugged lad wi-h a desire to play in the opponents’ back field, which he did when not gummint | up his own team s plays. WIB WILLIAMS—Left guard. Senior. Fast, sure block( r man. Played end on defense and looked good the Was at his best against Westville which is the hope of MAC WENSKUNAS—Captain-elect. End. Mac will be that is no pun. He has possibilities of becoming a gnat running back if he can learn to use his blockers. BRUCE MORGAN—Half back. Senior. General utility positions and played in all of them well. LEONARD GATTLING—Tackle. Senior. A big boy whose ankles were his undoing. Earned his second letter but could have been better if he had wished to be. WAYNE CORNWELL—Guard. Junior. A. A. The Girls' Athletic Association is a club for the grils of G. T. H. S. Its purpose is the stimulation of interest in athletics and the promotion of ideals of wholesome living. The first goal of a girl interested in the G. A. A. is to become a member and to receive her first award. She may receive her numerals by keeping the training rules, passing tests, taking gym, and participating in the various after-school sports. This club was organized this year, under State supervision, for the first time in the history of the school. In the leadership of Miss Ward, G. A. A. has found a capable and successful leader. A variety of sports were enjoyed during the year, including tennis, soccer, baseball and basketball. The girls have also participated in several social activities. Parties were held at Christmas and on Valentine’s Day. The proceeds of several Bake Sales held during the year were used to buy letters and awards. Approximately fifteen girls attended Play Day with Danville as the hostess school. Activities were closed with a spring picnic. BOTTOM ROW—Doris Alexander. Heave Ho! Georgetown band is on the go! OCTOBER 14 With anxious eyes we watched the board. And was Urbana burned up when they saw us score! 20 The tears trickle down the gals' cheeks as they watch the big and brawnies leave for Gary. (Mary and Betty went too.) 21 A stitch in time saves nine, still holds good—eh, Ike? 25 Fifty-nine girls solemnly swore not to eat between meals. We ought to have a fair bunch of Venus’s in a month. NOVEMBER I I heard one Frosh say he made a 90— must be Paul's wife's doings. 18 Shiver my timbers—those Juniors sure do know their murders. Ellen, you were wonderful. 24 The day before. 25 The day. 26 The day after and, oh, the miseric! 28 The picture taking man was here- - I almost didn't recognize Billy wiili shoes on. DECEMBER I Max the Wenskunas is our next captain. Oh, boy! 3 All State thinks much of our loccl talent. Eh, Sam? 4 Do, re, me, fa. Yes, the girls sang— and does Miss Hill look relieved. 5 Said Cole: Absence makes the hear! grow fonder. Said Koalbucket : Oh, yeah! Absence makes the grades grow rounder 23 Everyone went around with a di vine look on their faces—almost sec wings on Steve! 25 Merry Xmas everybody. That mean'; you, too, Bernice. JANUARY 3 Jean did right well by herself—let's learn her technique. JANUARY—Cont'd. 5 The boys hit the basket so much that they got a trophy and then had ''Red'1 and Legs pose with it. 18 The ex-soldiers were entertained by our sweet-voiced students, and their sweet-sweet-voiced horns. (Wonder if they still thought they were on the front?) 31 Madame Acksonjay—what does this long line mean? FEBRUARY 9 The boys, boo, hoo! The girls, Foo, too; In bed with the flu. Katchoo, Katchoo! 14 Louise and Johnny are making eyes. (Could it be that he is her valentine?) 15 Say, there, those Junior girls type right along, don't they? 27 The boy from Minnesota really trucked around with that basketball. MARCH 3 It sure did us good to see Danville get beat by Indianola. What's that? Well-ll, we sort of lost ourselves, but— 7 To be or not to be or something like it was what the Olivet boys argued a solid two hours over. 14 I can still taste that Heavenly Hash the Home Ec. girls served. 15 Goodness pays! We salute you, Lucy Jane. 3 I Clara and Bennet—candy helped them along the road to success. APRIL 2 The house was packed, the gum put away, and the Spring Concert began. 10 Somehow, someplace, oh, well, anyway, Aneita came back with a sparkler,” not on her right, but on her left hand. 14 It's a grand race—first the Purples, then the Whites! 21 What a pl y! You're going to laugh and laugh and laugh. MAY 5 We laughed and Miss Henderson giggled. I 8 Everyone looked so pretty—the girls with their long dresses and the boys clean behind the ears. We thank you, Juniors. 3 I A tear dashed quickly aside—it makes us feel kind of sad to leave you and the little mice, but remember the class of '39 when they are famous. Auf Wiedersehen. ALUMNI OF G.
