SHERWOOD It ,is the church related college which con- stitutes the last line of defense against the attack of the dictators in an authoritarian state. It is the most difficult of all agencies in society for the political leader to control. He can use any political unit with the same ease by which he obtained power. By virtue of its organization and administration the church school is the farthest removed from political influence. In the church related college the lamp of science and learning will be lcept alive longer than any other place. These schools and col- leges are not only children of the churchg they are full grown adult members of so- ciety wearing the spiritual armament which is most diflicult for the sword of the totali- tarian leader to pierce. Since its establishment in the days when the idea of such an educational institution was new, it has pioneered, progressed, and obtained recognition from educational authorities throughout the country. A school rich in friendliness and tradition, and a campus studded with beautiful old buildings of outstanding architecture make Georgetown an ideal place for the education of young Ameri- cans. Georgetown will continue to live and grow because its chief aim and function is the inculcation of Christian ideals, and the development of Christian character, along with the closest attention to intellec- tual attainments. -gun K wgsiaaggagfg as ss, . It is located in the heart of the Bluegrass region of Kentucky, where the Southern ideals of these two spirits are deeply im- bedded in the heart of each stu- dent. Here we find, as in few other schools, that one's friends are the whole student body, and not a small select group. After a ball game the Sweet Shop is packed and jammed with students talking over the game, or anything that may be of particular interest to them. To walk through a group of these students and be greeted by a Hi, Joe, Sit down, Bill, or anyone of similar little greetings, which in its small way conveys a deeper meaning than just the word, friendship, shows how the students feel toward one an- other. Friendship is the Hrst and greatest lesson in our collegeg and yet more important, it is the les- son practiced most thoroughly. TOP: O. K., H's a date. In this medium, people enjoy them- selves and others. On Georgetown Campus it is the students' expression of love for their country, their friends, and of life. Musical activities include such en- sembles as Men's Glee Club, WOH1Cl1,S Glee Club, Chapel Choir, Band, Or- chestra, small ensembles, and also pri- vate instructions in the chosen field. Dr. C. F. Bonawitz is head of the Music Department and has a proficient group of instructors working under his direction. HITTING THE HIGH ONES THE BEAUTIES OF SONG nn- mm nj ua. Evans, who came to Georgetown in 1935, graduated from North Carolina State in 1928, after which he was freshman coach at that I E 461 school before talcing over the mentorship at Rollings College, Florida, in 1931, where as- sistant coach R. H. Miller was under Evans' capable direction. Miller had been a star in football, basketball, and baseball. Coach Miller is also in charge of the freshman team and is responsible for the successful intramural pro- gram that is carried on in Georgetown College. FOOTBALL SEASON Fourteen veterans from Georgetown College's 1940 gridiron aggregation answered Coach Bob Evans' initial call, and prospects for a winning season were bright. Seven of the 1940 gtidders were lost by gradua- tion and the remaining five who failed to return were drafted or in defense work. Evans lost three backfielcl men, A. B. Rudy, James Rocke and Jack Disney, via the graduation route and was forced to build his backs around Ray Pigman, all-state gridder in 1940. Rex Miller, Harry Johnson and Emmett Boylan rounded into great shape, solving Evans' chief problem. When the final tabulation was made following the Transylvania tilt, in which the Bengals re- gained possession of the huge chapel bell which goes to the winner, it was found that the 1941 edition of the Tigers, with a record of seven wins as against two defeats, hold the slot for the third best team in the school's lengthy history. It is expected that the Tigers' generalissimo will have a difficult task during the 1942 football year to have enough men on hand for a team. Seven members of the 1941 grid team will receive sheep-skins in June, and several others are ex- pected to begin wearing khaki uniforms instead of football togs. Xavier's mighty Musketeers opened the Tiger playing season with a 63-6 victory over the Evans- men. The Tigers bounced back, however, to chalk-up four straight wins at the expense of Marietta, Milligan, Carson-Newman and Findlay in that order. Ray Pigman, who tallied six of seven touch- downs in the four tilts, was the big gun of the Tigers' offensive drive. Eastern's highly-touted Maroons stopped the Bengals' victory march with a 41 to 0 defeat. Louisville's Cardinals had their wings clipped the following week, 19-7. Union was forced to forfeit. Georgetown win- ning, 1-0. Transy's Pioneers also bit the dust in the final game, 21 to 13, at Lexington. veg... V ' QAIEE' f. UWA e -. . V A seventeen-game winning streak as freshmen made the 1941-42 Tiger net aggregation a certain threat in che K. I. A. C. race. After opening with an amazing victory over Cincinnati's Bearcats, the Tigers went on to win three games on a southern tour, including vic- tories over Elon, Emory-Henry and North Caro- lina State, before mighty Duke upset the George- town basketeers, 47-41. The Tigers bounced back to triumph in three more contests before Westei'n and Eastern dis- played their winning ways over the Bengals. Georgetown came back, however, with wins over Berea, Wesleyan, Transylvania, Union, before Union and Eastern chalked-up conference wins at the expense of the Evansmen. Injuries in the early stages of the season hurt the Bengals' hopes. Junior Britton suffered a nervous breakdown, Duane Conkey was the vic- tim of a trick knee, Lyman Benson suffered a wrenched back, Lucien Lee and Dick Duncan sprained ankles. Four of the 1940-41 basketeers were lost by graduation, Burr, Rudy, Kling and Adams, while Honaker and Jones worked in defense plants and Lamma and Johnson joined fighting forces. Only two, Benson and Pigman, will be lost by graduation in June, and, in the event the 1941-42 Bengals can keep out of the draft, one of Ken- tucky's best basketball teams will be at George- town College. .si - - I734, ine: o' f pr' fo a dul'ng th if-4, .ff ,..n , x - J 'l 52' 1 .7 WEAR LYMAN BENSON-President of G Club, is the only member with three letters in three sports Bnson holds three in basketball, football, ancl track.
