C LASS PROPEHCY It was the year of 1959 A D Mrs Van R1tzenburg of ll' North Palace Ave nue New York N Y recexved a letter from George West Texas It read as follows George West Texas Route 3 Marchl 1959 My dear Joyce Iwr1te wlth the hope that the length of th1s letter w1ll excuse the length be tween letters Please do not resent my seemmg concert but may I say that I am qu1te pleased wxth myself as a psych1atr1st I really hke my work and am makmg a mce l1V1hg for myself I have worked my pat1ents down to a mxmmum so I de cxded to take my vacat1on now and take a tour of the surroundlng country to study the dlfferent types of people In leavmg I took a detour by our Lmdholm I-hgh School to leave a word or two wlth my patxent R A Clements who IS supermtendent there She detamed me a moment to tell me about the P E Teacher at Cade I-hgh School who had been unconscxous for two days Seems that one of Beth Stewart s students had quxckly caught onto the upper cut My plans are to wr1te to you on my tr1p whlch 15 not a planned thmg At each stop I shall dec1de where to go from there I m on my way to San Antonio My traxn IS about to pull 1nto S A but fxrst I must tell you what I read m the Tlme magazme It says that John Gmn IS bu1ld1ng a rocket sh1p to the moon The name of h1s shmp IS to be Colllns And he told us all that he was goxng to be a doctor I Th1s afternoon I was goxng by the bxg Post Offxce on Alamo Plaza when 1 cry1ng chlld captured my attent1on She was lost and was carrylng a letter from a Mrs Gulch I hushed the chlld and took her to the address on the letter A woman came 1nto the hall and xmagxne Estelle Essary oops Gulch fnow run nxng a nursery Whxle havmg tea wlth her she told me about Joyce G1lstrap be1ng ln the home for the mentally slck They thxnk the amateur p1an1sts drove her nuts I was just leavmg when a couple came xn Could you ever guess who had come after thexr seven darlmgs 'P Yes .To Ann and Estel Caron I m on the tra1n agam I ve been lookrng at a plcture IH a magazxne for about an hour and I just can t thxnk who lt looks l1ke It IS of a tall dark haxred glrl wxth long lashes around baby blue eyes She IS entltled Mxss Glance It s drxvmg me mad I I Th1s IS my f1rst t1me 1D the coal m1n1ng town of Rusk I was eat1ng lunch 1n a cafe and a colored man walked by me and 1nto a room H15 walk was most fam1l1ar even ln work clothes but I couldn t thlnk where I had seen xt before You could never guess who walked back out of that room our ole classmate Danlel I-Iadamek who IS a m1ner We had d1nner together that evenmg at some rxtzy n1ghtclub and found our old chum Jo Re1nhard smgmg The Man I Love wlth the orchestra whxch was dlrected by Carmen .Tones Bobby s toothbrush mustache looked very attractlve I got '1 letter from Margaret the other day and she sald Irvan was on Wall Street She dldn t say what he was do1ng and I really thought he must be rollmg m dough unt1l I got your letter and you told me you had seen h1m sweepmg snow off the streets sign, Day Nursery , greeted me and about a dozen children opened the door. CLASS PROPHECY fcont dj On arr1v1ng mn Tyler I ran mto the owner of the ra1lroad Idon t know how Carolme Ybanez got IH that pos1t1on but that s what I found her dolng 0Wl11T'lg a ra1lroad She told me that V1rg1n1a Hedr1ck hved here so Iwent to see her V1rg1n1a had changed her last name and also told me about be1ng elected Mxss O11 of 1959 I had arrlved just 1n t1me for a party honor1ng Jean Arnett who was promoted to drlller I arrxved m Dallas a few hours ago and am 1n the L O U D rad1o stat1on walt 1ng for the program to start Went shoppmg Just before I came here and Elda Garza was modehng 1n one of the b1g stores 'Ihe program started Gosh was I surprlsed to see R1chard Stannard walk out the master of ceremomes He was the only one on the stage not havxng to use a loudspeaker on h1s m1crophone It was one of those programs where they g1ve away thlngs and I was the lucky and proud rece1ver of a telev1s1on set I loathe c1rcuses but I heard about th1s one act that was supposedto be the most dangerous 1n all the world so I just had to go There I found Haven Yar brough and h1s beautzful partner performmg th1s magn1f1cent feat Whlle on my way to Fort Worth I f1nally flgured out who M1ss Glance IS You remember Rosa Sue M11ler well that s who 1t was Went to the races IH Fort Worth I was contentedly s1tt1ng there when they started announc1ng the rac1ng horses The horse announced was Sugar Blues owned by Rene Mxller I rushed down to talk to her and knocked down a fat lady All of a sudden there was Everest Pawhk p1ck1ng her up and 1ntro duc1ng her to me as h1s w1fe We talked awh11e and then I left to see Rene She 1nv1ted me out to cockta1ls after the race At cocktaxls I met her famous l1ght wexght Jockey Betty Jordan and we had a good ole get together We went to a place the next day to play a game of tenms and found Margaret Brown coach mg tenn1s You asked me 1f I had heard anyth1ng from Edward G1nn Well the last I heard he was a m1ss1onary to Korea and 1n h1s spare t1me was mstructmg the Koreans 1n the ra1s1ng of Grand Champ1on Bulls I was next at a resort 1n West Texas and was quxetly readmg The B1ggest Moment of my Llfe by John C G1nn who wr1tes IH h1s spare t1me when I heard a b1g commot1on outslde There were people all over yell1ng and polnt 1ng at someth1ng hangmg from a tree I looked and there hung Wally Goebel by the seat of her rxdxng br1tches I talked to her and she sa1d that she was goxng to the hospltal from her ranch to get her foreman Jlmrny Hudgeons when some thxng went wrong w1th the plane and she had to ba1l out Seems Jzmmy had petted the wrong end of the bull I returned lookmg forward to my qu1et country home but was greeted w1th an a1r of exc1tement Everyone was rushxng around my c1stern try1ng to pull someone out Just as I got over there they pulled h1m out G J Rodgers had found that my cxstern needed to be worked on so he was golng to have lt fxxed by the t1me I got home It s okay now That s all for now I hope that I haven t bored you so that you won t answer IH fear of gettmg another letter hke th1s Yours Mary Rogstad P S My telev1s1on set was put m and last nxght I saw the world's greatest toreador f1ght1ng some bulls Could you even pxcture Amta Cantu dolng that'?
