Some of the views on these pages were entries in the Camera Contest sponsored by the Cherry Tree. First prize in the con- test was awarded to John F. X. Britt for his picture of Dean Kayser which appears at the top of page 7. Other prizes went to Miss Katherine Fasbender and Milton R. Mintz. Judges in the contest were Professor Nor- ris I. Crandall, of the Art Department, and Professor Ernest S. Shepard, of the English Department. 1 J - • . ' ' I 1 .. ..

The rod of the old-time schoolmaster is broken forever, and a modern educator ' s ability is no longer judged by his skill with a ruler. Indeed to a university ' s faculty comes the privilege of developing a stu- dent ' s talents to the full and an opportunity to help him make the most of his possibilities for living a fuller and richer individual life. In this respect, the faculty of George Wash- ington University has brought much credit and honor to the college. Handling, as they do, all types of students from that most curious phenomenon on the campus — the freshman — to the sage and venerable senior, they must display a vastness of innate un- derstanding, sympathy, and knowledge of youth. These dispensers of wisdom serve in a multitude of other capacities — as per- sonal advisers to the students, as faculty advisers to the many campus organizations, and as active and enthusiastic participants in University activities. Whether address- ing a large group of students or engaging a few in conversation, the faculty has always shown its progressive attitude toward mod- ern youth and in such treatment has avoided one of the great evils of present-day insti- tutions — mass production. The other views which are shown here were taken by our staff photographers, as were the snaps and candid shots used throughout the book. Indeed the publica- tion of the 1941 Cherry Tree would not have been possible without the fine co- operation of Bill Craver, Jim Gnam, Ward McCabe, Hugh McLaughlin, and Milton Mintz, who did so willingly everything we asked, from invading the upper regions of Strong Hall to hanging out of second-story windows. ■ ■ ii ■ if if s f■■lll■ l, i , ill llll f rss nib Li
