I I C- r ANY THINGS GO INTO THE MAKING OF A YEARBOOK— THINGS LIKE TYPEWRITER RIBBON AND RUBBER CEMENT, AND THINGS LIKE WORRY AND THOUGHT AND TIME AND ENERGY. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS INSPIRATION. THE 1941 CHERRY TREE HAS HAD AS ITS INSPIRATION THE STUDENT BODY OF AN URBAN AND MODERN UNIVERSITY, A STUDENT BODY WHICH NEEDS— AND HAS DEMANDED— A YEARBOOK IN KEEPING WITH THE TEMPO OF THEIR LIVES. WE HAVE ATTEMPTED TO AN- SWER THEIR DEMANDS IN THIS BOOK, BUT WE HOPE THEY WILL REALIZE THAT IT IS BUT THE BEGINNING OF WHAT WE FEEL WILL BE A LONG LINE OF BETTER AND EVER MORE PRO- GRESSIVE BOOKS. The rod of the old-time schoolmaster is broken forever, and a modern educator ' s ability is no longer judged by his skill with a ruler. Indeed to a university ' s faculty comes the privilege of developing a stu- dent ' s talents to the full and an opportunity to help him make the most of his possibilities for living a fuller and richer individual life. In this respect, the faculty of George Wash- ington University has brought much credit and honor to the college. Handling, as they do, all types of students from that most curious phenomenon on the campus — the freshman — to the sage and venerable senior, they must display a vastness of innate un- derstanding, sympathy, and knowledge of youth. These dispensers of wisdom serve in a multitude of other capacities — as per- sonal advisers to the students, as faculty advisers to the many campus organizations, and as active and enthusiastic participants in University activities. Whether address- ing a large group of students or engaging a few in conversation, the faculty has always shown its progressive attitude toward mod- ern youth and in such treatment has avoided one of the great evils of present-day insti- tutions — mass production. Right, officials at the ground- breaking ceremonies for the new auditorium. Front row, left to right: Mr. Leon Tobriner, Mr. Robert V. Fleming, Mrs. Joshua Evans, Jr., Dr. Luther H. Reichel- derfer, trustees; Mr. Charles Tompkins, builder; Mr. Joseph Toomey, superintendent of con- struction, and President Marvin. Back row, Dean Elmer Louis Kay- ser, Mr. Slocum Kingsbury, archi- tect; Secretary Harry C. Davis, of the Board of Trustees; Mr. Charles E. Merry, Business Manager of the University, and Mr. Waldron Faulkner, architect. ««3 A 2 s
