But, before I say goodbye, there are some people who deserve special recognition for their efforts. First of all, I would like to thank Lydia Kearney and Juanita Murphy for their patience and dedication throughout the year. Your help was great- ly appreciated and your contributions resulted in the success of this section. To Mary Ann, thanks for putting up with the endless questions and for staying after school to explain the little tid-bits. Mrs. Marcus, you are a very experienced person. Your useful advice was greatly needed. A special thanks is extended to Kee Coleman Studios for their excellent senior portraits. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to anyone and everyone else on the staff who has offered time and effort. SURELY . .. ABSOLUTELY ... in between there SOMEWHERE! (I think!) Seriously though, without the help of all these people, my section would have been in- complete! First of all, I would like to thank Jake Barker’s Portrait World for providing us with all the pictures of the undergrads. Next in line, deserving just as many thanks, is Mr. Tom Walker of Taylor Publishing Company! Without his help, I would still be sitting in front of the computer, trying to figure out how to turn it on!! (Plug it in first, right?) Many thanks to Mrs. “Mom” Marcus for all her typing and advice! Room 8 has been my home away from home and Mrs. Marcus has helped me feel comfortable with living down there!!! Thanks to Johnny Edwards for the endless candids you provided us with! MARYANN! (Meg-mong-Editor-in-charge-of-EVERYTHING!) Thanks for putting up with all my crazy questions and for doing my division pages! Also for all your helpful advice! It will be put to good use! (To test out my new paper shredder! J K!) You’ve been more than just a boss, but a DEAR friend! Keep smiling and keep in touch after you graduate! Thanks to my photographer — John Jow — for the Officer’s pictures and for help within the sec- tion. Also, I would like to thank additional photographers; Andy Villarosa, Eugene Kwong, and Larry Wong for providing me with much needed pictured! Last, but not least, I would like to thank all the people (who I had failed to mention) who helped me with the endless quad-packs, picture-stamping, meeting deadlines, and everything! Enjoy a summer full of fun and madness! Take care and party hardy! (but don’t forget to invite me, too!!) The condition of being different or having differences. 2. An instance of being dif- ferent; a point of difference. Diversity, as defined in Webster’s Dictionary, describes the students of George Washington High School to a “T!” Just by looking around the campus, you can observe many different personalities, fashions, and lifestyles. The unique way in which people put together their daily outfits shows just how creative some people can get! This creative energy can also be found in many hall lockers! Behind the doors of many of the seemingly dull orange, yellow, or gray lockers are unique interiors which reflect the personality of their decorators. Upon looking inside, a person may find neatly arranged pictures of Rob Lowe or Heather Locklear, or a collage of Town Country stickers. Some include mirrors to use dur- ing the day, while others include memo boards on which the owners leave a note to their locker partner(s) such as, “Don’t sauash my lunch!”, “Meet you after school!” or “Did you see that fine girl in reg. 324?!” Others elaborate themselves with shelves, wall-to-wall carpeting, and wrapping paper cleverly disguised as wallpaper! As you can see, it just takes ingenuity and a little creative effort to make your locker like a second home away-from home! 114 On the night of February 21, 1986, some of our fellow students put on a show displaying a varie- ty of designers’ fashions. With the help of participating bay area stores, the show was a success. The cast consisted of 41 G.W.H.S. students, 11 guest models from D.I.O.N.N.A.’s modeling troupe, and 2 guest dancers from the G.W.H.S. dance class. A MATTER OF OPINION J V_V V.OS M46t£S As the editor of the Clubs and Organizations section, I would like to thank the many devoted people involved who made this possible. I would like to begin by thanking Mrs. Carolyn Marcus and Mary Ann Abejuro for taking the time and patience to carry me through the year. I would have never accomplished this without you two. 1 would like to thank Tammy Tsuei and William Young for their endless hours of typing, drawing up quad-packs, and especially their confidence in believing that it could be done. Don’t worry Grace Hikido, I can t forget you for your dedication and hard work at the ever going typewriter before the end of the deadlines. T hanks to Roger Huie for running the many errands and being there when I needed him. Once again, “Thanks cousin!’’ And also many thanks to John Jow and William Young again, for the time they took from their lunch periods to get the pictures I needed to put this section together. I would like to also thank Mr. Tom Walker for guiding and assisting me to understand what I was doing through the course of the year. The Washington Yearbook Staff is very fortunate to have him as our representative and triend. 1 his is one experience that I’ll never forget as long as there is a yearbook around. Thank you all who have made this section of 1985-86 possible!!! — William Huey — Editor: Clubs and Organizations AUTOGRAPHS 116 DENT LIFE WHERE TO MUNCH As soon as the hands of the clock reach 11:36, the bell sounds and signals the start of lunch hour. Of course, this time of the day is awaited with much anticipation, but it in- duces a small dilemma in one’s mind: where should I eat today? Do I want Chinese food? Japanese? Pizza? Burgers? Burritos? If one doesn’t feel like grabbing lunch at the beanery, cafeteria, cable car canteen, or one of the nearby grocery stores, there is always the option of patronizing one of the delis, cafes, restaurants, or fast food places near campus. This is a refreshing alternative as long as one remembers to get to 5th period on time. The Surveyor now presents to you, in vivid black and white, some of the George Washington Eagles’ most popular places to pig out! VHBURGERS bill’s PLiC Especially a teacher’s favorite, Bill’s Place is famous for its big scrump- tious hamburgers and sandwiches. Located on 2315 Clement St. Waiting in a long line is not much of a burden considering the reward of a big, juicy sandwich you can purchase at Blondie’s, (33rd and Clement) a long time favorite. Delicious good-sized burritos and other Mexican munchies make up the menu at Gordo’s, which is located on 2252 Clement St. 118 FOR LUNCH If one has more time to sit down to a savory Chinese meal. Kam’s is a real- ly worthwhile place to eat. Located on 3624 Balboa St. Kam’s Instaurant CHINESE CUISINE Lung Fung is one of the best places near campus to satisfy a variety of Chinese food cravings. Located on 3038 Clement St. If you feel like eating in a relaxed at- mosphere, Simple Pleasures is the perfect place to go. Not only is the at- mosphere like home, but the great fooa tastes just as if mom made it herself. 1 4 Japanese fast food? What’ll they think of next? Tokyo Stop (25th and Geary) has surprisingly good Japanese food from a variety of dif- ferent dishes. r 1 isING i tfil MANDARIN S’ SZECH CUISINE Delicious chow mein or fried rice in take-out boxes can be purchased at Tsing Tao. (32nd and Clement) Although it is usually crowded, the service is usually fast. Zephyr, with its contemporary at- mosphere, award winning espresso, and terrific soups, sandwiches, and pastries, is a popular place to go if one doesn’t mind a good walk to 3643 Balboa St. 119 EVOLUTION OF The Freshman Homo Immaturus Because the Freshman is voung, he is usually short, naive, gullible, and therefore an easy target for mer- ciless upperclassmen. When alone, a Freshman is quiet and obedient, but if found in a group of his own kind, will become loud, and almost unbearably obnoxious. Since the Freshman is just adapting to high school life, he tends to be confused at procedures that are routine to everyone else; such as how to get a re-admit, how to change a class, or how to find the nearest bathroom. Freshmen can be spotted by their juvenile ap- pearance and their P.E. uniform top, which many seem to wear to school. Famous Line “Is there really a swimming pool on the 4th floor?” The Sophomore Homo No Problemus The Sophomore stage is often thought of as being the most bland since the Sophomore is not a very distinct species; it is in-between everyone else in age as well as character. The Sophomore does not have much to worry about — no real studying to do like a Junior, dodging of upperclassmen Tike a Freshman, or prom-date finding like a Senior. In fact the Sophomore tends to be very smug. — sometimes almost too smug. Because he has just passed up his confusing Freshman year, the Sophomore has the presumptuous habit of thinking he knows it all. Sometimes this facade of knowledge is put on to avoid being mistaken for a Freshman, which happens often, but is definitely offensive and humiliating to the Sophomore. Famous Line “I am not a Freshman!” 120 Tired eyes and slouched posture often characterize the pressure-plagued Junior. This stage is infamous for being the academically most difficult and most burdensome considering the hard classes, PSAT’s, and college-future-worries the Junior encounters. This doesn’t mean that the Junior is not social, however. Being a Junior means being an up- perclassman for the first time which is conducive to more Drivileges and newly found respect from lowerclassmen. They do a lot of socializing to make up for lost time, and enjoy sparking rivalry between themselves and the Seniors! Although life for a Junior may be hard, he always has a bright future to look forward to. Famous Line “What’d you get for 3?” Since the Senior stage is the last stage of develop- ment, the Senior is the most respected. Even though the Senior is usually very conceited, he in a sense deserves to be considering that he’s survived the earlier grueling stages of development. One of the most distinct traits of a Senior is nis aversion to work. The cause of this laziness is the disease, “Senioritis.” Gradually spreading at first, this epidemic among Seniors becomes so prominent at the end of the year that Seniors almost become an endangered species, blaming multiple absences from class on the disease. Contrary to their lack of energy at school, however, the Senior has a natural magnetism for fun and becomes very enthusiastic when it comes to parties, dances, Grad Nite, Senior Sneaks, and the Prom. Famous Line “Where’s the party?” AN EAGLE The Junior Homo Academicus The Senior Homo Lazy-as-Hellus 121 1985-86 In the World The Surveyor Staff would like to reflect upon the 1985-86 year with memories that were both memorable and tragic. One of the most serious issues was the famine and starvation of the people in Africa. American singers, to help relieve the situation, came out with the USA Aid for Africa song which produced millions of dollars in food and supplies. Africa has had many problems ana one of the pro- blems which exploded in 1985 was apar- theid (racial segregation) in South Africa. Riots resulted and the United States was to take a look at the investments it had in South Africa. AIDS was another big issue and not too many people cared until a big movie star like Rock Hudson died from it. Now peo- ple are more conscious of their sexual contacts, open wounds, Haitians, and homosexual people. The California lottery was a bright spot this year with people winning millions of dollars on “The Big Spin.” All kinds of people were eligible to win, even illegal aliens, which caused much publicity. The space shuttle Challenger catastrophe was indeed a step backward for our space program. Seven astronauts died including the first civilian teacher, Christa McAuliffe. Heated elections in the Philippines were held this year. Ex-president Ferdinand Marcos left the Philippines after much scandal came out openly. Corazon Aquino is now President of the Philippines. President Reagan and Soviet Premier Gorbachev held arms talk negotiations in Geneva. Gorbachev’s resolution was to reduce nuclear weapons by the year 2000. Country singer, Ricky Nelson, died in a plane crash, the Night Stalker was killing innocent people, and Coke was having a Cola War with Pepsi. Coke came out on lop by removing the original Coke and replacing it with a new' Coke. They came out w'ith Cherry Coke, too. Coke brought the original Coke back and called it Coke Classic because of public dissension. It sounds like this year in review has had many bad moments, but the memories will remain and we wrill learn from them. Those memories will allow us to learn from our own mistakes and make us become better individuals. Of course, the good memories will always be there to replace some of the bad ones, and those we shall remember foremost. 122 HEADLINERS At GWHS The 1985-86 school year was a year of change for Washington. It started off with new time schedules, ad- ministrators and teachers, six-class requirements, and new bungalows. Many of these changes can be ac- credited to next year’s 50th an- niversary, for which a campus face lift took place during the year. Well over 100 trees were planted by the Eagle Student Body and faculty, in conjunction with the Friends of the Urban Forest in November and December 1985. There were new clubs and organizations, such as Spinning Wheels, Marine Science, the Math English Science Achievement Association, the Tree Service Society, and even Powder Puff Football made a very brief come back. An unprecedented win by the Sophomore Class in the An- nual Screaming Eagle Spirit Rally sparked much controversy between angry seniors and sophomores, but the sophomores remained the vic- tors. The Varsity Football team made it again to Turkey Day, but suffered the loss to McAteer. Coach Ruane, retired this year as football coach. The Eagle Basketball team won City Championship and hopefully went further, hut time of press came first. The World Class Writers painted murals with spray paint on the tennis court walls and in “the pit.” The GWHS Speech Team came away from tournaments with many trophies. Different groups had assemblies during the year, such as the Winter Recess Assembly, the Lunar New Year Assembly, the Hall of Merit, and the Black History Month. All of these diversified events make Washington the outstanding school that it is. Of course, as any friendly local trendy will tell you, the 1985-86 year was no ex- ception. First of all, regarding clothing, there are always a number of different styles on cam- pus, such as the preppie, slight, moderate, or hard-core trendy, or those of new wave, punk, etc. so it’s hard to say what was trendy and what wasn’t. However, the dominating styles seemed to be oversized clothing, stirrup pants, Reebok shoes, denim jackets, surfer t-shirts and shorts, sweaters around waists, and the absence of socks. Popular name brands for clothes and accessories were C.P. Shades, Esprit, Fila, The Gap, Guess, Gucci, and CB Sports. As it got sunnier, the most worn sunglasses were those by Vuarnet or Wayfarer. Plastic watches such as Swatch watches were ex- ceedingly numerous. Hairstyles were generally short for guys and girls and the use of mousse, styling gel, or hairspray was widespread by both sexes as well. The population of mopeds and scooters seemed to steadily in- crease at school during the year as the skateboard made a definite comeback as a favorite fad and mode of transportation. Other popular favorites this year: Music artists — Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Wham, Phil Collins, Tina Turner, Dire Straits, Tears For Fears. Movies — “Ram- bo”, “The Color Purple”, “Back to the Future”, “Out of Africa”, “Rocky IV”, “White Nights.” T.V. shows — The Cosby Show, Family Ties, Miami Vice, Moonlighting. Actors Actresses — Emilio Estevez, Michael J. Fox, Don Johnson, Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald, Whoopi Goldberg. 124 EAGLES SERVICE SOCIETY First Row: Marie Yoo (Secretary). For the 12 years Jim Ruane has been head coach, the Eagles have always played with superior performance. This year was no exception. With confidence and teamwork, the Eagles prepared themselves for the triple “A” championship. On the muddy Thursday morning of November 28,1985, the Washington Eagles went to “Turkey Day” against the MacAteer Jaguars. The team consisted of 25 veterans and 25 rookies, all contributing to one ex- plosive unit. Some of the more outstanding players who made it to All-City were Mark Rosenberg, offen- sive and defensive tackle, Benny Pope, tailback, Michael Hodge, lineman, and Jayson Louie, wide-receiver. Even though their unfortunate loss to MacAteer (6-7) on “Turkey Day ’ had laced them second in the record ooks, they will still be remembered as 1 to all Washingtonians. I thought this day would never come!!! I want to begin by thanking Mrs. Marcus, our yearbook advisor as well as our super mom. Without you, Mrs. Marcus, I would have been totally left in the dust. Thanks for putting up with me when I got insane or totally crazy. “I didn’t mean to give you any white hairs!” MaryAnn, my garlic bread buddy, I must have worried you a lot! Thanks for having confidence in me when it looked like we wouldn’t make it. Without the garlic breads I would have never survived. I would also like to thank Kee Coleman, Goerge Kruse, John Fung, and John Jow for taking excellent sport pictures. I’d like to thank Johnny Edwards (Mr. Kowala-Man) for taking a lot of those perfect candid shots. Without those pictures, this section would have never been completed. To Mr. Tom Walker, thank you for all of the help and advice you’ve given me. To Michelle Lee, Susan Seto, William Huey, and the whole yearbook family, thank you for always supporting me and offering to help. A special thank you to Maureen Chew and Nancy Wada for the typing. You guys helped me keep alive through each deadline. Most important of all, I would like to thank Victor Tong, Risa Gleichenhaus, Alan Gee, and Andy Villarosa. You guys are the greatest! We’ve gone through a lot, that includes my yelling, screaming, and bossiness. Without all of you, this section would have never turned out. You guys all went beyond what you really had to. THANKS AGAIN!!! I hope all of you achieve your dreams and goals. You guys deserve it!!! LOVE YA!!! So, should I forget anyone, please forgive me and try to unders- tand the situation I am in ... thanks! To Mrs. Marcus, thanks for helping me out so much in proofing and calming down panic-stricken, procrastination-suffering section editors. Your support was very much appreciated. And Mr. Marcus, thanks for the great lunch and encouragement. To Tom Walker, the yearbook god and advisor, (and J. Walker too — just kidding, Mrs. M.) thanks for preventing hell from breaking loose and for the guidance when it did. Thanks tar your patience and vaulable advice. Without the help of the section editors, the completion of this Surveyor never would have materialized. You all did a great job while tolerating my never-ending nagging and criticism simultaneously. Thanks for meeting the deadlines on time, (well, basically on time anyway). Thank you to Jake Barker and Kee Coleman Studios for the photography you did for us. It was a pleasure working with you. Also, special thanks to Haag Photos and Bay Custom Labs for the develop- ment of all our film. You are all fantastic! Of course, without shutter-happy photographers, this yearbook would be zilcho. Deep heartfelt thanks to the special efforts of Nitara Lum (who did most of the color section pictures — love you, Nitara) Johnny Edwards (who did many of the sports and BW shots) and Andy Villarosa, John Jow, and Tim Wang. Thanks to all the other photographers on the staff also. To my friend Marc, Thanks for helping me do the division pages. Yes, I Know, I owe you one. Stacy Mar, thank you so much for all your artwork that I asked for last minute. (Sorry that it was the very last minute!) To Nancy Wada, thanks for lending me your great typing talent and Victor Tong, thank you for your wonderful help whenever I needed it. Oh, and Nancy thanks for helping me out with using the new computers. Well, thank God this is all over and done with. Everyone, have a great summer, get a tan, and PARTY!
