I want to begin thanking Karen Ono for all the typing, picture stampings numberings and quad-paks that she did. To Denise Cole, our heartless slave driving editor-in-chief, thank you for answering my many and sometimes demeanal questions and helping me with all the lit- tle tidbits. Thanks to those two I was able to remain calm in situations that would have driven me to the looney farm. Hey Wilbur Tan-aka, thanks for always offering to help; it was greatly appreciated. Yoho Ms. “J,” you did a fantastic job, not only making sure the 1985 Surveyor made it through, but also for being a good friend and confidante. To Nancy Fujimoto and Diane Chiang for providing the laughs to get rid of the headaches in 4 yearbook class . . . remember this — “One day Panda asked Gumby, ‘Do you want some Orange Juice over at the Loveable Toyota place?’ ” Good luck to next year’s editor and to the Class of 1985 . . . “Everything we ever wanted in life is within our reach, go out there and get a piece of it! Answ. (I to r): Stacy Glaser — '86; Joey Decker — '87; Candace Liu — '87. Side Row: John Tong — '86: John Oh —'87. Of all my duties as Undergrad Editor, my hardest task is thanking all the people who have helped me. First of all, I would like to thank Ms. Joseph for her help and understanding. We both started out in the same boat — not knowing much about yearbook. But, now I think I’m finally catching on. My greatest thanx goes to Karen Ono, for being such a great friend and also a great typist. She really cheered me up when the going got tough. To Jo and Denise. Without them teaching me the ropes this section would never be. Special thanx goes to Jake Barker and his crew for taking pictures of our officers and undergrads. I would also like to thank our year- book rep., Mr. Tom Walker, for being such a big help. Without the help of Sunita, Darrell, and Betty, I would not have finished the endless stamping, numbering and many other things that needed to be done. Thanx for putting up with me. Last, but not least, I would also like to thank Nancy, Wilbur and everyone else for being such great supporters and friends. Not to forget the Student Body of- ficers. Thanx for putting up with the mess around your desks. Year- book class, 4th period, was the class I looked most forward to going to everyday. Room 8 is my home away from home. To all of my great friends in the Class of '85, I would just like to say, Congratulations! You’ve finally made it! Best wishes to you in your future. I’ll miss you all dearly. I would also like to wish all of you a fantastic, sunny summer vacation and to the Class of '86 We're finally there! Diane Chiang Undergrad Editor UNDERGRADS ACTIVITIES SPIRIT AND SALES Besides academic pursuits, the Washington Eagles direct a large portion of energy to spirit and sales. Spirit abounds at our rallies, assemblies, and games; not only among students, but among the teachers and faculty, as well. Of course, one needs to be able to generate this energy and how does one do that? From eating! Eating what? Food! What food? Food from — you guessed it — sales! Although our incessant sales cover a range of items from stuffed animals to sunglasses and candy bars to cotton candy, the majority of the sales are food sales. Because there are always loads of hungry mouths roaming the cam- pus, food sales are a great way to make profit and have fun simultaneously. (Facing page) 1. Three eagles help provide the music at one of the rallies. 2. Josephine Shew patiently scoops chow mein into a box at one of the ever-popular chow mein sales. 3. Faculty has spirit too! Mr. Vidal, Mr. Martin, Ms. Holberg-Olsen, Ms. Victoire, Ms. Sanders, and Mr. Dierke belt out the Washington High School hymn. (They tried to, anyway!) 4. Senior officers lead the rest of the screaming senior class on to victory during the cheering contest. 5. Jimmy Kang takes down orders for the stuffed animal sale across from the Main Office. 6. A proud Eagle shows off her collection of balloons. 7. Tran- sactions being made at a burrito sale. 8. Freshmen try to consolidate their cheering and hide the fact that they really don’t know what’s going on. To the sounds of a KSOL DJ, our fashion con- scious eagles featured clothes from many stores and even several dresses designed by Washington High senior Steven Heard. Both performance wise and profit-wise, this show was a huge success. 115 Dances have always been an essential part of high school life, not only because they are a source of income or for other obvious reasons, but also since they provide an outlet for school pressure. Just getting out there and dancing the night away really makes one forget everything, whether it's that ugly grade you got on your English essay, the fact that Mom found those things in your jacket pocket that she wasn't supposed to find, or that you spilled acid on your favorite pants in Chemistry. As in the past, Washington’s classes, clubs, and organizations sponsored countless dances throughout the year, allowing people to get out on the dance floor, go crazy, and have fun! 1. KMEL D.J. Ty Bell flirts with the camera at the '85 Valentine's Dance. 2. The unseen hassles of a dance: Ms. Joseph patiently collects tickets at the door which may seem like an easy job, but actually isn’t, considering that it must be done carefully for each of the 400 people. 3. Slow dancing with balloon-grams tied to her wrist. 4. Let's dance! 5. Some people will wear anything to get noticed. ON THE DANCE FLOOR 116 SWEEP stands for Save Washington’s Ecology and Environment Please. Formed a few years ago by several teachers, it is a very effective organization that helps keep our campus clean. Basically how it works is two days out of the week two teachers will volunteer his classes and on his designated day will take his students out and clean the campus. If they do an acceptable job, all students enjoy getting out early on Friday as a reward. SWEEP thanks the General Service Society for inspecting and the Eagle Service Society for emptying the trash cans. 1. Getting absorbed in the art of sweeping. 2. Room 10, home of garbage cans, plastic bags, and those stylish plastic gloves. 3. This person is so nice as to do all the work and let her friend stand there and watch. 4. Some people get so into it that they even manage to sweep the campus with a smile on their face. 5. One of the more enjoyable jobs: picking up the trash manually. SOME “GOOD, GLEAN FUN” 117 118 EDITOR’S BLURB Where do I begin ? This is the part I dreaded the most — thanking people because I’m really paranoid that I’m go- ing to leave someone out. So thank you to everyone in the whole world. (There — did I leave anyone out?) But seriously, there are several people whom I owe sincere thanks to: especially head honcho editor Denise Cole for all your advice, ideas, and patience. You're a great person to work with and an excellent teacher. Thanks for keeping my panic to a minimum and my confidence to a maximum. To Wilbur Tanaka, thank you for running around like a mad man developing my pictures, providing the cameras and film, and even taking time to take some pictures for me when they were desperately needed. (And also for lending me your Walkman when the going got rough.) You must be Superman incognito! To Josephine Shew, thanks a million for providing me with answers to my endless questions. You really helped me a lot Jo, thanks! To the two photographers in my section, Rodney Leong and Kunthea Johnson. If I didn't have you, I wouldn’t have had pictures, and no pictures would have meant no section! Thank you for coming through when I needed you. To everyone, especially you seniors, my best wishes in the future and good luck! We're done! We’re done! TODAY we are all somewhat less nervous, a little bit older and, most importantly, we have completed four successful years that have gone by all too quickly. Your contributions have reinforced the fact that Washington is an outstanding comprehensive high school — a school for all. Personally, I will miss you as you are my class. TOMORROW — I expect an invitation to your five-year reunion. 122 MAG LEVELS ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL HELEN McKENNA ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL GARY LOUIE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Sven Anderson Science Glenda Archer Science Alex Athanasopoulos Physical Education George Baker Business Education Gael Beresford Math James Bernie Bonnie Margaret Boghosian John Borcher Sheldon Bornstein English Birsinger-Casassa Principal's Secretary English, Social Studies English, Business Education Math, Counseling Harold Callan Claire Camozzi Paul Carmassi Richard Cassioli Andrew Caughman Physical Education Counseling Special Education Practical Arts Typing, Driver's Education Connie Chan Denise Chandler Sanford Chandler Vincent Chao PaulChing ESL English Social Studies ESL, Social Studies ESL Rosemary Farac Special Education Linda Festa Social Studies. The work, plus tension filled deadlines, plus individual squabbles, required a lot of patience. Whatever the case, though, the section would have never seen completion without the help of some unique people. Thanks to Rodney Leong and Ed Lee whose dedication and hard work formed the backbone of this section. Thanks to Denise Cole and Wilbur Tanaka whose always patient advice gave me confidence in what I was doing, although sometimes I didn’t know exactly what it was that I was doing. And many thanks to Tom Walker and Denise Joseph who put a great deal of time, effort, and care into this project. In short, I hope this section reflects the efforts of all of those involved and provides some lasting memories of a fantastic 1984-85 school year. 165 Winfred Ark Clubs and Activities Editor Now that the deadlines have all been met, the hard part begins — thanking everyone who contributed to this year’s Surveyor. Everyone on the staff did a wonderful job, and I'm especially grateful to the individual section editors (yes even you Win, my very . . . unique editor) who put in a lot of their own time to complete our yearbook. Despite my cons- tant nagging to meet the deadlines, I think you all did a really excellent job. Without you, this book never would have been produced. There are a few people who deserve special thanks and a great deal of gratitude on my part. Two people on the staff especially helped me get through this year. First of all, Josie Shew, who helped me make many of the artistic decisions, and contributed a great deal to putting this book together. She kept me sane when the going got rough and everything went crazy with her jokes and laughter, and, of course, all the food!! Don’t forget our trip to Europe, Jo! A very, very, very special and heartfelt thanks goes to Wilbur Tanaka, who took a great load off my shoulders by taking care of the cameras, film, and photography. Without him I really would have gone totally crazy. I owe any sanity I have left to him TFIANKS 'Bur. I would also like to thank Tom Walker, our rep. from Taylor Publishing, who helped us make a reality out of our dreams of a yearbook to remember. And now a very special thanks and congratulations goes to Ms. Denise Joseph, our faculty advisor. She took over a very difficult and demanding job, and really did wonderfully. She was always there when we needed her, and she made zillions of calls to Dallas without a single complaint. Despite the constant name confusion, it was really great working with her, and I hope we managed to make her first year in yearbook an enjoyable and memorable experience. Well everybody, we can relax now — no more of the endless drawing of quad-packs, typing, cropping and stamping pictures, or any of the other countless tasks that go into putting a yearbook together. I don't know about you, but I ac- tually think I m going to miss all of it. I hope it was as fun for you as it was for me. I hope that all the dreams you have for your lives come true, and that this yearbook is saved as a memory of The Year of The Class of '85 for many years to come. Flave fun, keep smiling, and keep in touch! The team began the sale of raffle tickets during the latter months of the previous school year. Everyone on the team was selling their hearts out, in school, in front of supermarkets, and around the neighborhood. After many months of hard work, the Eagles sold enough tickets for the trip. Coach Ruane had organized everything for the team. The Eagles were ready for the fun, adventure, and a good game of football. The team, their coaches and managers left for SFO on Thursday, September 6, 1984. Our Eagles met the South Delta Sun Devils at their high school. Many of them knew the Eagles from their trip down to S.F. the previous year. Each member of our team was to stay with a member of the Sun Devils. Thursday night at the school was filled with pizza and punch; the Sun Devils were ready to show the Eagles a good time. On Friday, the Eagles were to go to school with the Sun Devils. The people were friend- ly, instantly making our team feel at home. The high school held a dance in their honor. Saturday, September 8, was the day of the game. Both teams were ready for that day. The game was televised over a South Delta channel. The Eagles won the game 6-0. Both teams played hard, but the Eagles prevailed. Soon after the game, the Sun Devils took the Eagles to Grousse Mts. to sightsee. The view from the mountains was beautiful. Sunday, everyone went to a Canadian Pro Football Game. After the game, the Sun Devils escorted the Eagles to the airport. No one on the team wanted to go home; everyone had made so many new friends. While waiting for the plane, the team began to talk about the Sun Devil’s trip next season. After the win in Tsawwassen our team was more than hyped up — they were flying. While playing the second pre-season game, our starting quarterback Robert Ludwig was knocked unconscious before the half. He was taken to the hospital by an ambulance. Robert Styles had a chance to catch up, but maybe it was too late. As the final whistle blew at Oceana High the scoreboard read 5 to 34 Oceana. As the regular season grew closer, it seemed as though our team was ready for the first game. Unfortunately the MacAteer Jauguars clipped our Eagles’ wings. The Wilson Warriors were the Eagles’ first victims in the United States, so to speak. The Balboa Bucs however ruffled the team’s feathers, but there was something about losing the third game of the season to the third regular league opponent that made our Eagles “snap” into action. The Mission Bears, Lincoln Mustangs and Lowell Indians all fell down, one by one, in defeat. The victories over Lincoln and Lowell were the sweetest because of the Lincoln Washington Bell Game and because of last season’s humiliating defeat to Lowell. The team had to come back and show the Indians who the bosses really were! The last game of the season was against the Galileo Liorts. There must have been a fog around the Eagles because they fell victims to the Lions’ paws. However, not all was lost. The team did place 4th citywide and were on their way once again to play the Balboa Bucs. The first three quarters remained scoreless — that is until Stephen Rudd kicked a field goal with 7 minutes left in the game which put the Eagles ahead. The Bucs. however had tricks’up their sleeves. They were able to maneuver the ball down the field to also make a field goal. With only 3 minutes left our Eagles gave it one more push, but it was too late. As the final whistle blew the scoreboard read Eagles 3 a’nd Bucs 3. 169 170 Credit; 1984GeorgeT. The Frosh-Soph football team raced to a 7 and 0 season this year. This was the first time a Frosh-Soph team has gone undefeated. QB Steve Collins directed the offense throwing for 6 touchdowns and running for 4. Running backs Benny Pope, John Stokes, David Yu and Alvarez Davillieur piled up an average of 190 yards per game rushing. Opening gaping holes on the line were Adam.Benson, Eugene Hsin, Grant Wiseman, David Woo and Sean Morgan. Receivers Leroy Perkins, Raul Ebio, Lieslie Clark and Cary Mitchell accounted for many T.D.’s through the air. Washington’s defense was awesome — holding its opponents to an average of 87 total yards per game. David Yu, John Oh and Robert Yee played outstandingly as line backers. Raul Ebio, Leroy Perkins, Fred Gacutan and Emmett Laboone were the mainstays at defensive back. The defensive line was composed of Mike Dickens, Toby Wiley, Jeff Hill and Robert Anderson. Coaches Callan, Hamman and Swensen were very pleased and proud of this year’s fine team. 171 115 Basketball 115 Lightweight Basketball 1st Row, Standing: Mr. A., Michael Hornsby. With the support of Principal Al Vidal, most of the Washington coaches, the cheerleaders, and a mostly Washington crowd, our Lady Eagles started the game with consistent scoring and stayed close to the Lowell Indians. Washington was trailing only 19-21 at the first half. The Eagles, however, failed to make the shots and were trailing 24-34 by the third quarter. “We were going to try to stay tight,” said Lonia Hutcheon, a starting forward and guard for the Eagles. Washington lost with the regrettable but respectable score of 34-46. “We were down that day,” said Coach Hamilton. “We were not at all like that during the season.” The ladies played ten non-league games and won seven of them. During the regular season games, the Eagles took third place in the league by winning all but two games, one against Wilson and one against Lowell. “The entire league played tightly this season,” commented Coach Hamilton. Lowell took first place by winning all of its games, and Wilson lost only one game during the season and took second place. Coach Hamilton, who was the co-coach for the ladies during this season and expects to take over for Mr. Firpo as the head coach, said that the team was a good one. The starting center and forward, Monique Petoteguy, had a 85% free-throw percentage which was the highest of anyone this season. She also received an honorable mention in the City Tournament. Lonia Hutcheon, who played with the All-City opponents team for the second year in a row, and Sabrina Allen, a starting forward, scored a total of over 200 points during the season. Hutcheon, who is only a sophomore this year, (and an Eagle Athlete of the Month her freshman year) notes that all players, except for senior, Monique Petoteguy, will be back next year and will be even a better team from the year’s experience. “We'll get to the championship next season,” she declared. The Lady Eagles played a season that stretched from October to March. The team is also planning a “Shot-A-Thon,” a fund-raiser, sometime in May to finance the tournaments and the traveling for the coming year. By Joon-Sung Chang (Eagle Staff) 180 SWIM TEAM Seated: M.
