LLLLL CULL u-LLLL Qurveyor 1983 George Washington High School Together We are the Mighty Eagles! In the past year, we Eagles have been drawn together by a variety of ex- periences. We huddled together in the chilly wet October and November months cheering our teams on to their many vic- tories. At spirit rallies, we exhibited en- thusiasm and unity which has been un- precedented in recent years. During regular school days, we studied together and helped each other before tests and shared our joys and griefs when report cards were received. We may have not known it at the time, but together we were creating an atmosphere... we were characterizing what Washington is and means: a group of people who are grow- ing strong, enthusiastic, loyal, and united. We are making the realization that together we are the Mighty Eagles! . What makes an Eagle an Eagle? Is it the “creative” ways we spend our time? Or is it the unique way we study? Or maybe it's our highly nutritious diet. It has been concluded that all of the above have some effect on an Eagle; but there is a special quality that Eagles possess alone: that certain something inside of each Eagle that makes him an individual, not just a face in the crowd. It is this distinctive quality that binds Eagles together at Washington. Nothing is quite like an Eagle! 4 Student Life The GWHS school life is active and colorful. The Eagles’ natural curiosity and eagerness lead to a great variety of school activities. The many clubs and organizations vary from sports to different cultural interests. Chow mein sales, school dances, football games, rallies — these are all ir- replaceable parts of an Eagle’s school life. The most notable aspect of the GWHS school at- mosphere is the Eagles’ open friendliness and quest for new goals. Eagles will always attempt to soar higher than all others! 7 The Spirit of Spirit Spirit at Washington is riding high. Eagles have no limit to the way they show their love for their school, whether they are par- ticipating in SWEEP or cheering wildly at a game. Eagles are always showing their spirit. They are one of a kind in that respect. Eagles really are 1 — all Eagles are caught up in the spirit of spirit! In Search of the Mighty G.P.A. Eagles have proven by trial and error that the best results are obtained only by cramming the last minutes before the bell rings. Jumping up and down, and pestering teachers with last minute questions also stimulate the Eagle’s brain cells to great productivity. However, there are always some odd Eagles who prefer to study way in advance and even sacrifice their lunch for this purpose. What keeps the mighty Eagles going? What makes the Eagles so strong and smart? FOOD! Not just any food though, only the highest quali- ty; Hostess fruit pies and the greatest chow mein will do. This gourmet diet is sometimes sup- plemented by a $1.00 bar of the World’s Finest Chocolate or a bagel. This diet of an Eagle has been scien- tifically proven to help students solve math problems and write better English papers. Food is indeed the staff of life! 12 The Staff of Life ova avo- c tvste , «oeiTcs ecc •U t « . . C £« • o t«f' • « • CO«S l k uw A ir w 14 Friendship... Eagles of all shapes, sizes, and colors mix to form bands of friendship as strong and undefeatable as the Eagle itself. Into this friend- ship also come Eagle squabblings, teasing, and joking. But in the face of all the ups and downs, the Eagle spirit shines strong and unites one and all in friendship. An Eagle is a true friend! 17 This year’s Class of 1983 student officers have been ambitious and determined to reach the height of success. The slate includes: Lynne Fujimoto and Denise Wright — class Co-Presidents; Mary Daquioag — Vice-President; Kim Arikawa — Secretary; Lillian Lee — Treasurer; Yulauncz Draper, Cassandra Pickett, Bettina Poon, David Satoda, and Monetta White — Executive Council. These students’ main goal was to raise enough money and spirit for our senior activities, and they did a great job. Together as a group they organized our pep rallies, and together as a class, we over powered the undergrads by winning the screaming Eagles Trophy in the Golden Wing Pep Rally. That’s just the beginning of what they’ve done Kim Arikawa for our class. They also took the time out to plan our dances, food sales, fashion show, class picnic, Grad Nite, and most important of all, our Senior Prom! These ac- complishments were not for the benefit of themselves, but for the benefit of us as a class, to have the most successful year possible. Was this an easy task to perform? Well, for some it would have been hard, but for our mighty Class of 1983, all it took was the enthusiasm and sup- port of each other. All in all, most of the credit does belong to the student officers, for without their ideas and organizations, we would not be where we are now. '83 The Pop Poll — The annual selection of the Senior Popularity Poll Winners has been a favorite and highly anticipated tradition at George Washington High School for several years. Each senior registry received ballots and each senior casted their votes as to who fit the proper catagory. After spending our three underclassmen years together cramming, partying, cutting, gossiping, suffering, savoring both the bland and zesty flavors that constitute day to day life, several individuals among us tend to gain notoriety for outstanding characteristics or talents. Normally these celebrated few are honored only by word of mouth, revered only in the in- formal conversation of fellow students. But now, brought to you by your friendly neighborhood SURVEYOR (yahoo! Applause please.), these outstanding individuals are presented to you in vivid black and white. Pay tribute to them by posting them on your bedroom wall or locker door (to either admire or throw darts at, do what you will). And now, we present to you ... THE ELECT: Most Likely to Qucceed Most Likely to Succeed — Amelia Rosales and Brandon Key won this title because of obvious reasons. They both belong to clubs like the G.S.S. and the Eagles Service Society, while at the same time, they find time to do their school work. It’s their hard working attitude which will hopefully help pave their way to a successful future. Most Talented Most Talented — There are only so many people in this school who can sing, act, and participate in speech tour- naments. It’s these two people, Deidra Lannon and Alec Mapa, who are blessed with such tremendous talent. Alec had participated and came in first in many speech tour- naments, performed in school plays, and sings in the choir. Deidra is also on the school choir and performed on stage as well. Mosi Qtudious Most Studious — This year, the class of 1983 has, instead of two, four students who are outstanding in their studies at George Washington: Ida Wong, Kim Walker, Harry Choy, and Carl Nicolari. To teachers and students alike, they have set examples in showing that hard work and studying will reap rewards that will come about because of their hard working attitude. Besi Figure Best Figure — You ever wonder how it would be like to meet a person who could be on a cover of a beauty magazine and another with a body like a body builder? Well maybe you can’t, but here are Debra Benton and Eric Kinunen — the two with the best figures the class of ’83 has chosen. Word of caution: don’t drool on the yearbook! Besi Dressed Best Dressed — From Sassoons to Calvins and from the best looking shirt and sweaters you’ve probably seen them all worn by these two people: Carol Ridgeway and Derrell Jones. Some people say that the clothes of the person tells something about him or her, so the way they dress should tell you a little about them. Most Friendly Most Friendly — These two, Lynn Fujimoto and Bryan Dorfler, are probably the best people to grace our class of ’83 because they are the most friendliest. When you’re walk- ing down the hall and pass them by, they always seem to have enough time to say, “Hi, or hey what’s up.” It’s that kind of attitude that makes them what they are — the friendliest. 53 Mosi Rowdy Most Rowdy — You say you want to party with rowdy peo- ple? Well look no further, because Linda McGee and Tony Valosek fit the bill. We don’t know why they’re so rowdy, maybe they take in too much sugar or maybe they’re just too excited about graduating from George Washington. Besi Looking Best Looking — Look at Gina Myers and David Eisenberg then look at Bo Derek and Burt Reynolds. See any resemblance? Probably not, but one thing is for sure, they are tops in their categories: best looking. Like a song goes, “Just One Look,” then you’ll know why they’re the best look- ing the class of '83 has to offer. Besi Couple Best Couple — When you’re walking through the school, chances are you’ll bump into this couple, Sharon McCarthy and Jon Amedee, who are walking hand in hand. By just looking at these two, you know they were meant for each other. It’s an inspiring sight, watching them walking down the halls, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company. Mosi Gchool Spirii Most School Spirit — Mary Daquioag and Leo Hsieh have helped to contribute to the spirit of the class of ’83 and George Washington as well. How? Because for one, Mary is a cheerleader, who at school games helps liven up the crowd and brings up the school spirit. Leo helps to contribute to the school spirit by getting involved in many activities like the Red Cross and many others. 54 Best Smile Best Smile — Bettina Poon and Robert Rainey have some of the best smiles in the class of '83. Why? Maybe they brush their teeth with Close-Up which helps to brighten up their dazzling smiles. You’d think that sometimes they were get- ting ready for Candid Camera, whose motto is, “Smile... you’re on Candid Camera!” Best Hair Best Hair — In these times when people care a lot about the way they look, the first thing they worry about is their hair. According to the seniors of 1983, Ann Venenciano and Kevin O’Neal are the two who care most for their hair. What’s the secret of having the best hair? Who knows? Is it shampooing everyday or something else? Ask them, maybe they'll let you in on their secret. Class Clown Class Clown — Amy Levinson and Eric Jones are not, in cer- tain teacher’s minds, the best of students, but they are fun to have anyway. They make you laugh when times are dull or boring in the class with their jokes and smart but funny answers to a teacher's questions. Tallest Tallest — Jenny Irwin and Michael Jordan are those kind of people who just seem to stand out in the crowd. Is it growth pills or is it hormones that are working overtime? Or are they related to Susan Anton and Kareem Abdul Jabbar? But seriously, would’nt you want to be that tall so people will always look up to you? 55 Deseri Island Companion Desert Island Companion — First imagine yourself on an island with no inhabitants except yourself and one of these people: Jessica Wolpov and Dwayne Redmon. Hopefully they’ll make good desert island companions, but you better make sure that they can cook. Mosi Aihleiic Most Athletic — Sports buffs at George Washington should recognize these two. They’ve joined many sports and have strived to be the best at what they do. Kathleen Maruoka has joined softball and basketball, while Warren Parker has join- ed sports such as football, baseball, and basketball. Both of these people are in their own rights, tremendous athletes. Best Personally Best Personality — Denise Wright and Robe Williams are two great people with great personalities that shine like gems. When you first meet them, they are so alive and so full of energy, that it's hard not to be attracted to them because of their “magnetic personalities.” Qhortest Shortest — David Walker and Denise Henderson may be the shortest in the class of '83, but their skills and talents make up for it. David has been on the basketball team and Denise has a wide field of talents that has enabled her to even choreograph a fashion show. Noting their abilities, there is no doubt that one can’t judge a person by height alone. (Denise's picture not available.) 56 Abejuro, Valerie — This has all been very interesting. Andrews, LaDana — It’s been hard, but fun. It’s been a long time, but worth the wait. We are not ready to go out and plan our lives. In '79, it seem- ed as if ’83 would never get here. Now it is here, we are seniors and we are Ve! My wish to you would be that you have a happy and properous life and that you make the most of it. I plan to be the best at whatever I am going to accomplish, so look out world, here I come! Arikawa, Kim — I feel that I have learned a lot dur- ing my four years here at Washington, not only academically, but as a person as well. I hope to attend U.C. San Diego and major in biology. The very best of luck to Mona, Stacey, and Gordon, you three really deserve the best! Barr, Tony — My plans for the future are to go to a college and then to law school. Attending GWHS has been a rewarding ex- perience. Not only have I learned, but I have had fun too. Good luck to all the seniors and rest of the school. Campbell. Patricia — These past four years I have accomplished how to learn and achieve goals. My plans for the future are to attend college and ma- jor in business or become a nurse. To the Class of ’83. congratulations and good luck! Best of wishes to you in whatever you do! Chin, Gilbert — Throughout my three and a half years at Washington, the education I have receiv- ed was superlative, especially in my science courses. Many of my classes were vigorous and challenging. Within three years, I have met many wonderful and intelligent fellow classmates. It was great to buy a box of chow mein and sit on the bleachers and watch the blue bay and the Golden Gate Bridge on a sunny and warm day. After I graduate, I hope to attend U.C. Davis. Chien. Joy — I would like to wish good luck to my friends, Helen, Wen. Anne. Yu-Fen. Eliza. Joe, and many others. Thank you all for the great joy you brought me the past four years. SENIORITIES The Year That Was 1982-83 We, of the Yearbook Staff, would like to reflect upon the 1982-83 year with memories that were both fond, tragic, exciting, and magical. The summer movies usually were successful and this year’s crop was by no means an ex- ception. In fact, it was the biggest year for movies. This year’s movies had the ingredients for blockbusters: drama, humor, special ef- fects, the underdog boxer, irresistible kids, and a little abandoned alien. In Rocky 3, Sylvester Stallone once again proved that courage triumphs over even the most frightful of odds by piting his muscles and courage against Mr. T., the modern day Goliath. In E.T., the biggest money maker up to date, is about a little alien who was left behind on Earth. He befriends a little boy and establishes a tight relationship with him while trying to contact his fellow beings and avoiding scien- tists and government operatives. The year was full of happiness, but not without its share of sad tragedies. Princess Grace of Monaco lived a life that was from a page of a fantasy novel. She was an average American girl who turned into an actress. After leaving a movie career that was at its peak, she married Prince Rainier. For more than a quarter of a century she was Princess Grace. Like most fairy tales, this too had an ending, but unfortunately it ended in a sad manner. She died from injuries in a car acci- dent, thus ending the tale of a princess. Henry Fonda, Veteran of numerous movies and plays, also passed away, but his ac- complishments on the screen will always be a part of film history. His portrayals of characters, both real and imaginary, will be sorely missed, but his legacy has left everyone enriched by his performances on the screen. Another person who has died recently is Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev, the Premier of the Soviet Union. During his term he has tried to promote peace in the form of various talks like the S.A.L.T.’S. The year will also be remembered as a tragic one for those who died from the poison found in bottles of Extra Strength Tylenol. It’s a sad feeling to know that there are some people in this world who would do such a tragic deed to others. Despite it all, the year did not end altogether in tragedy, for just as there is death, there is also life. Prince Charles and Princess Diana gave birth to a new heir: the future Prince William. The year has past but the memories remain. The year of 1982-83 will always be in our thoughts. Those thoughts could be of many things; it could be of movies or events that were both happy or sad. Those memories may conjure up past tragedies, but the memories of the good times will always be there as well to brighten up the thoughts that we so fondly remember. Above: Memories of Mr. Fonda. Below: Rocky and Mr. T. 62 Top left: The Late Princess Grace Top right: Tylenol off the shelves Above: Mr. Brezhnev at a younger age Below left: The Royal Family m ■riH 63 The Senior Section has been special to me this year, not only because I am a senior and it’s my last year, but because I had the honor of doing the Undergrad Section in my sophomore year. Pain. Yearbook production makes for a lot of pain. One would assume that high school students suffer enough in trying to juggle a full schedule of classes, tests, homework, love lives, the struggle up the social ladder, and life in general. However, there are a few hard core masochists among us and, like true ar- tists, they are willing to suffer for the sake of creativity. These gifted and giving in- dividuals sign up for yearbook. I offer my deepest heartfelt thanks to everyone on the staff. You guys are fan- tastic. I’ll never forget you. A special thanks to Mrs. Marcus, for without her, none of this would have been possible. William Faulkner once said “If I had the choice to feel nothing for eternity or to feel pain, I would always pick pain.” Well, to each his own. I think we will opt for feeling nothing for a while. Ciao! — Valerie — Yearbook Editor 87 THE SURVEYOR STAFF I would like to thank the photographers, Irina Gushin, Marcelle Taylor, and Michael Hyman for the time they took from their lunches to help me get the pictures needed to make this section possible. I would also like to thank Linda Faghih and Valerie Abejuro for their help, and Simrat Ghuman for those magical fingers that did much of the copy. Much credit and thanks to Mrs. Marcus for getting me to finish my section. It was more work than I thought it would be. Much luck to next year’s editor. Lofgren Elaine Tse Harvey — Once again, the George Washington High School Drama Department produced another hit with the 1982 fall production of the play “Harvey.” Alejandro (Alec) Mapa, as the leading character Elwood P. Dowd, was mesmerizing as the eccentric, gentle, and jovial older man, portraying the part with magnetic charm and finesse rarely seen in high school talent. Having a talented student body is a blessing; however, at times it can prove to be somewhat of a burden. For “Harvey,” so many talented students auditioned that Mrs. De ended up doubiecasting many of the roles. Despite this possible stumbling block, both performances flowed smoothly and were performed before full houses during all four performances. Well directed, nicely presented, and superbly performed, “Harvey” was produced in the fine tradition of Washington fine arts productions: SUPERIOR. 90 Washington High School Presents ... Its Third Annual Fashion Show FASHION '83 Featuring Clothes by: Trend Jeff’s Jeans Tuxedo King Karen Thompson — Designer Linger Longer Lingerie Lounge Jessica McClintock The Clothes Rack Pic-A-Dilly Zoftig Chairperson — Denise Wright Choreographers — Ronnie Redick and Denise Henderson For the second year in a row the Class of '83 sponsored the annual Fashion Show. This year was the third annual Fashion Show and it seems to be improving as each year goes by. This year’s Fashion Show was hailed as the best ever” and undoubtedly a smashing success. The Fashion Show was a stunning combination of gorgeous clothes, beautiful choreographing and organization. The show was choreographed by Ronnie Redick and Denise Henderson to music provided by Mid Town (T. K.) Pro- ductions. The show brought in over $1400 for the Class of ’83, proving that Fashion is not only beautiful, but lucrative also. This year’s Fashion Show was a well planned, extremely organized affair, involving many hours from all involved. In years to come the students of Washington would be well advised to follow the fine ex- ample set by the Class of '83. In a word Fashion '83 was a stunning success. 93 Eagles are always doing something. Never a dull moment, lest a quiet one. Whether they are helping with a sale, going to class, eating lunch or helping out with a club, Eagles are always on the go. Although these times may seem hectic and busy to the point of ex- haustion Eagles manage to have fun and will fondly look back on these crazy times as “the good of’ days.” Who could ever forget memories like those in the making right now? Memories like the mor- ning announcements so quickly ammended in the afternoon an- nouncements. The Spirit rallies, the chow mein sales, the computer walk or any one of the daily acitivities we now engage in day by day will be forever implanted in our hearts. There are good days and there are bad days but Eagles have learned to take each day — Day by Day. IN 9PIRIT Throughout the football season the mighty and brave Eagles continued to support their teams at games both at home and away. The annual Bell Game was an especially excruciating afternoon because of the less than perfect weather but still Eagles of all shapes and sizes turned out in great number to support their team. Eagle spirit was high throughout the season, despite the nasty weather and sports oriented activities continued to flourish also. Washington would be truly lucky to ever have such a show of spirit again next year. Faculty Alumni Carol Gilmore Bonnie Casassa Robert Eshoo Effie Pandell Robert Hilmoe Danise Chandler Doug McEachern — Having taught in every major San Francisco high school, except two, allows me a basis for comparison. George Washington is my favorite because of the at- titude of the students, the friendliness of the staff and administration, and the building-campus design. Hoadley Johnson — I became a teacher at GWHS in the year 1950. I was very fortunate to be assigned at this wonderful school. It made me feel great to come back and be a part of the school that helped me so much when I attended. I am proud to be working with the staff and kids at GWHS, and hope to have many more proud years of teaching to come! Denise Joseph — I had been teaching at Mission High School for two years when I was given the option of going to either GWHS or Balboa. I didn’t hesitate for an instant to pick GWHS. My student days were all good memories and the school's reputation was such that I wanted to be part of the staff that worked so hard to maintain that reputation. I was both proud and pleased to join this faculty and I’ve enjoyed every minute-so far! Merton T. Jones — I wanted to teach at GWHS for a combination of reasons. Having lived near the school and attended GWHS with much enjoyment, I had a sentimental attach- ment for the school. Having done my student teaching at GWHS. I was able to evaluate the school as a desirable teaching site. Not only have I never regreted teaching at GWHS, but in fact have had a constant sense of awareness of how fortunate I have been to be able to teach at the school for so many productive years. Lionel Marcus — I have always wanted to return to GWHS to complete my cycle of attending and teaching at Roosevelt Middle School and George Washington Hiqh School — this has been fulfilled. Washington is the best high school in San Francisco! Daniel Yee — I started my teaching in a San Francisco High School, after student teaching at Crestmoor High in San Bruno. I always wanted to teach at Washington but my junior high principal at Potreto Hill refused to release me when there were openings at Washington. When the redesign came into being, I applied for the open positions and was fortunale to receive one. I am pleased to return to Washington High to teach because it is one of the finer settinqs for learninq Dennis Gregg — I was fortunate that when applying for a transfer from a junior high school, an opening was available at Washington. This would have been my first choice and I was delighted to accept. Washington was an excellent school when I attended it and has remained so since. Several of my former teachers were there and it was an interesting experience to become their colleague, rather than their student. It was also fascinating to see the changes that had taken place. In all. I’m delighted to be back. Daryl Zapata — I chose to return to my alma mater after student teaching here while getting my credential at SF State. I knew I didn’t wish to teach at any other school in San Francisco because of the great balance of students and educational programs at GWHS. I wanted to do my part to keep GWHS as the best academic school, as well as athletic and social, in San Francisco, as it was when I attended (’60-’63). I’m proud of the school, staff, and student reputations and hope to be part of that continual growth in the future. Bonnie Casassa — I came to George Washington in 1978 after teaching at Herbert Hoover. At that time the school district was moving the 9th grade out of junior high and creating four year high schools, and I decided I would like to teach older students. I was interested in teaching at GWHS mainly because of my experience there as a student. When I attended Washington I felt it was the ideal public high school. It was congenial, well-intergrated school with an outstanding academic pro- gram. School spirit was high games, dances, rallies, were enjoyed by all, the students had tremendous pride in their school. Because of these strong memories, I wanted to return to George Washington as a teacher. Robert Eshoo — I came to Washington High School from Mission High School because my old graphic arts instructor Mr. Collins left to teach at a Junior College which created a place for me. When I heard that I was to teach at my old high school. I was very pleased and still feel that way even after beinq here for ten years. Robert Hilmoe - y 7 I have always hoped to teach in a fine school like G.W.H.S. This institution may well be the finest comprehensive high school in the country. The students are smart and hopeful which gives the school such a positive quality. After eleven years of teaching my hopes were realized when Polytechnic High School closed some twelve years ago and I was assigned to my alma mater from whence I’d graduated in 1951. Moral: Some people never graduate. Denise Blue Chandler — I came back to Washington to teach because I was fortunate enough to be assigned here by Miss Adams and I have always appreciated my good luck ever since. I have not forgotten Marcelle Taylor, Ellen Yee, Ellen Chung, Gina Bullock, Shirley Young, and Valerie Abejuro for their help with quad-paks, write ups, copy, and picture numbering. In addition to the help mentioned above, my photographers Marcelle Taylor, Mike Hyman, Rikki Medow, Irina Gushin and myself contributed to the many candids provided in this section. Because of our efforts, we made this section a good one. I have enjoyed working with everyone, and loved organizing and outlining the entire section. VARSITY FOOTBALL ROUND ROBIN CHAMPS AND CITY CHAMPS There are new champions in town and their names are the Washington Eagles. After losing many talented players from last season the Eagles seemed to be short-handed on talent, but veterans from last season proved it to be untrue. The Eagles started their regular season against an opponent that had defeated them once before in regular season and again in the playoffs. This year the Eagles Marlon Brown fired a bomb to split-end Rick Stevens for the first T.D. The second score was the result of a play that would be used again in the season. It involved QB. Brown who handed off to flanker Warren Parker who then threw to WR. Stevens for a long gam. Tailback Troy Sampson then scored from 3 yards out. The offense clicked in the fourth but the defense added the finishing touches with 4 sacks by Tony Bachman, Tony Valosek and Terry Jefferson The score ended in a 14-8 victory for the Eagles. The second game was against the McAteer Jaguars. Touchdowns were scored by QB. Brown to WR. Stevens on a 20 yard TO. play and by running back John Mack on a 7 yard run. The Eagles won the game 13-6. The third game was against the Galileo Lions. Scores wore by WR. Parker who threw a 70 yard pass to WR. Stevens which later set up a 1 yard TO. run by QB. Brown. Leading 7-6. the Eagles were about to score the winning TO. but QB. Brown fumbled and the lions recovered. The Eagles needed a miracle to win and it came when linebacker Chris Means recovered a Galileo fumble. This set up a 16 yard TO. Pass from QB. Brown to RB. Sampson. But the game was not over yet. Galileo was driving down held and with time running out. Galileo threw the bal into the end-zone, to what appeared to be an open receiver but Rick Stevens and Warren Parker knocked the pass down to save the 12-7 victory. The fourth game was agamst the Lincoln Mustangs, in the annual BELL GAME.” This game showed the power of the Eagle defensive backfield. Interceptions were made by strong safety Parker, cornerback Mack, who ran it back for a TD. and Sampson, who intercepted two. which resulted in TDS. The Eagles won 21-0 and held te Bell for another year. The fifth game was against the Lowell Indians, The Eagles held on to win 19-14. The sixth game was against the Mission Bears. The defensive line gave the Mission Bear’s QB. trouble most of the game, which resulted in three interceptions by cornerback Sampson. RB. Mack scored on a 1 yard TD. run to make it 7-0. Next came an unusual play. QB. Brown fired a bomb to WR Parker which bounced off his helmet, but ended up being caught by tightend Tony Valosek who scored the TD. The ext TD. came on a 37 yard TD. run by RB. Bob Strebel. The last score was from backup QB. Eric Kinnuen to WR Kevin O’Neil on a 55 yard TD. pass The Eagles were soaring with a 36-7 victory and a 6-0 record. The last regular season game was against the Balboa Buccaneers. This was the Eagles only loss of the season. The Bucs forced 3 critical turnovers two stopped Eagle drives, one was intercepted and ran back for a TD. for Balboa. The Eagles en ded the season with a 6-1 record and first place which they shared with Galileo and Balboa. This set the stage for the playoffs In which the Eagles would face the Wilson Warriors The Warriors scored first on a blocked punt, but the Eagles came back with RB. Sampson leading the way with a 66 yard TD. run. The score was 6-6 until the Warrior’s RB. fumbled and Tracy Hawthorne recovered the ball for the Eagles. This set up another TD. by RB. Sampson from 4 yards out. The game was not over because Wilson was marching downfield. that is until cornerback Mack intercepted the ball which ended Wilson s twj for a return trip to TURKEY DAY and sent a high flying Eagles team into the city championship tournament. November 25. 1982. TURKEY DAY. The Washington Eagles were faced against the Galileo Lions, the defending city champs. The Lions scored first by a QB. run. The Eagles came back with a 62 yard drive which ended with a TD. from 1 yard out by RB. Sampson which made it 7-6 at halftime. The offense was hard at work playing catch-up football but the defense was hard at work as well. Linebacker David Mashburn intercepted one. SS. Parker and CB. Mack both intercepted ooe each. also. A key play came when linebacker Bob Strebel forced a fumbler and defensive end Tony Valosek picked up the ball and ran for the TD. The Eagles ended the game with a victorious score of 20-9 which earned them the title of ft 1 in the city. The Eagles had 5 members on the All-City Team: David Mashburn. Anthony Valosek. Terry Jefferson. Warren Parker and Ralph Hodge. David Mashburn was also selected to the All-Bay Area Team. We would like to congratulate Coach Ruane and his outstanding team. In training he pushes himself to the upmost of his abilities. If possible he makes time to better himself both physical- ly and mentally. Come game time his love for the sport shows as he demonstrates his abilities which have helped him to earn his title as an athlete. Victory does not blind him, for even if he could taste victory, he never lets up the pace and if he were losing, so much greater would be the intensity and the will to win. When the athlete enters the playing area he is a leader, he brings up the spirit of the team and sets the pace. Off the playing area the athlete is a friend who enjoys talk- ing of past victories and has the courage to talk to past defeats as well. “Never say die.” The athletes at George Washington High have constantly reflected this attitude. Why? Because their abilities and leadership have helped them to carve a path to victory whether it be as an in- dividual or on a team. 174 3131H.LV Left to right: Mr. A., M. Sawyer, S. Hirbod. E. Monetta White received ALL-CITY honors, and Ann Venenciano and Elaine Tse made our Hall of Fame. Standing left to right: Mr. A. Warren Parker. Herb Wiggins. Jon Amedee. Dwayne Redmon. Nathan Laven. Because some outstanding players were lost, the team did not have the talent that it once had. The whole team played their hearts out the whole season but they just didn't have the talent. The Eagles got off to a slow start in pre-season. They had some great regular season games like when they played McAteer. At one point in the game they were losing by 20 points, but in the 4th quarter they trapped McAteer’s players all over the court forcing many steals. They also forced them to take many bad shots. All this hard work earned them a much needed victory. The last game Wash needed a victory to make the play-offs. They played against a tough Lincoln team, and lost by a single basket. Harry Bobineaux and Bobby Rainey were the outstanding players for the Eagles. Back row Don Mitchell. Curtis Burns. Ramaundo Vaughn. Tony Glanton. Kahlil Hughes. Earl Williams. When the regular season started they couldn’t settle for a .500 season, they went on a 4 game tear beating teams by 10 or more points. The streak was halted when Mission beat them by 1 point. They finished the regular season 6-1. In the play-offs they defeated Lincoln 77-60. When championship time came around they were hoping to defend their title. Wash built up a 10 point lead against Balboa only to see them come back in the last quarter and defeat Washington 71-62.
