Nicholas Berdyaer rtgti mesChariRi ngti rrn 14 In respect, to these changing times, this offering of our creative efforts is presented to acquaint man with his many brothers and sisters around the world. We live so close, yet so far away, fear has been our separator. We live now in a new age dawning upon computer technology, higher con- sciousness, higher elevation of space, and higher ideas. In this age the true essence of sharing should be acknowledged. It is time for man to understand that we share the same sun, and we are all essen- tially the same with different names. All around the world the most enjoyed vibra- tion is that of a smile. Through our smiles we touch the heart of our fellow man. Together, let's lift our planet to a higher vibration. In love we stand. The co- stars were Karrie Ramm, Carol Witter and Alexan- dria Threadgill. Members of the cast were thrilled to work with Mrs. DeMatteis once again. A new concept was introduced in that skill- ed student directors were employed (Eric Cohen, Nancy Erikson). The Drama department has grown by leaps and bounds over the last two years, thanks to superior student talent and direction from Mrs. DeMatteis. Washington looks forward to many more wonderful productions in the future! The activities of sales and SWEEP have helped unify students enabling them to work together as opposed to the competition encouraged in the classrooms. The many fund raisers include the sales of chow mein, stuffed animals, car- nations, candies, T-shirts and bagels. Class of 83’s Dance! “Get It Up and Let’s Groove” school dance of Fall 1981 was sponsored by the Class of ’83. It was held at the 18th Ave. YMCA due to the renovation of the cafeteria. The dance was a great success which boosted the spirit and united the students. The school introduced a new activity during the Christmas season. On Dec. 16, 1981 the Ex- ecutive Board and Coun- cil sponsored “Holiday Fun on Campus.” This was a holiday festival that consisted of a lot of activities, including a mistletoe contest, potato salad eating contest, bob- bing for apples, and a guessing jelly beans Holiday Fun on Campus! The Holiday Fun Couple EXCITEMENT!! CHANNEL 9 FILMED A DOCUMENTARY ON OUR SCHOOL!!! The highlight of the school’s “stardom” seemed to be when Channel 9 came to film a documentary on Washington. Pro- ducer and reporter — Spencer Michels along with co- producer Bob Calo, spent a great deal of time trying to cap- ture the real “high school life” here at Washington. As Editor of both the Clubs and Activities sections, I must say that compiling these sections has been an un- forgettable experience which took a lot of hardwork, time, and dedication. The photographers, Anthony Abejuro and Patricia Bridges, deserve a lot of credit since they dedicated a great deal of time taking pictures for all sec- tions. This yearbook would not have been possible without them. In spite of the many problems in taking pic- tures of thirty-five organizations along with the many activities taking place in and out of school, I managed to pull all this chaos together. Special thanks to Paul Mica and Humberto Ruiz for doing the artwork for the Club and Activities divider pages; Sanford, Sonrisa, and Valerie for helping out when you could; and to Meg and Mr. Walker for all the ad- vice and guidance. Lastly, very special thanks to Mrs. Marcus who went through a lot with me to complete the sections. I sincerely hope that these two sections have captured a few of those special and lasting memories that oc- cured during the past year. I wish to congratulate Danyne, Kit, Bonnie, and Aaron for enduring the endless quad-packs and picture stamping, therefore prov- ing they have the ability to withstand any other form of torture known to man. A great deal of credit is due to Mark Ishikawa, who provided me with pictures at the last minute and kept the sky from falling on my head. Many thanks to Anthony, who did an excep- tional job despite my seemingly, incessent nagging. Of course, none of this section would have been possible without the wonderful aegis of Mrs. Marcus, whose dedication and encouragement have many a time saved me from near cardiac arrest. Finally, I con- gratulate the person who painstakingly planned this entire section and yet at the same time managed to retain a rational mind myself. — Valerie J. The first touchdown came when an in- terception by Allen Thomas ended up on the 1 yd. line. From there Doug Jones made the 1 yd. TD. On a fake kick Sadao Langfeldt made a 2pt. run leaving the score 8-0. Another interception, made by Warren Parker, helped to score the second TD leaving the ball on the 1 yd. line. Troy Sampson took it from there for a final score of 14-0 and Washington reclaiming the “Bell. The second game was against Mission. Sampson scored on a 3 yd. TD and Parker Kicked a 27 yd. field goal. Next, it was John Fukuda’s turn to make a 30 yd. TD. The last score of the game came from Sampson’s 41 yd. TD with the final score 22-7. The Eagles faced Balboa next and won the game which was a big AAA upset. Marlon Brown threw a 12 yd. TD pass to Fukuda to put them on the board. Thomas then intercepted the ball for a 18 yd. TD run. With a lpt. conversion and Thomas intercepting the ball again for a 30 yd. TD run, the Eagles defeated the Bucs 19-0. The game against Wilson was their only loss in the season. The game was a tough one with Galileo leading most of the way 6-7 until Parker kicked a 21 yd. field goal to beat the Lions 9-7. The Eagles came back for another glorious win over Lowell. With a season record of 6-1 and first place in the city, the Eagles were “Round Robin Champs” and headed for the play- offs. The Eagles had to play the No. 4 team Wilson, their only season defeat, and were ready for them. On the day of the game it started out on a sour note when Wilson scored in the first 5 minutes of the game, but the Eagles still had faith. It was a very tough game. The only score for the Eagles was in the 4th quarter and made by quarterback M. Brown on a 1 yd. run. They tried for a field goal but failed. The Eagles lost to the Warriors 6-7. With a record of 4-4, the team lost a lot of points due to lack of participants. They started off well with a practice game against the Salesions, but they just didn’t have enough wrestlers to fill every weight division. Although wrestling is a team sport, individual honors should go to James Kajiwara who placed 1st in his All-City weight division of 101 lbs, and Dave Fukuda who took 2nd in the 115’s division of All-City. Each year these coaches turn out a very organized group of players and this year is no exception. With fast- breaks, this group of young men hit the floor in a flurry of ball handling, outside jump shooting, and undcr-thc-basket rebounding. Their pre-season was not as good as expected due to illnesses of the players. As soon as their regular AAA season began. Washington acted like a new team on the court. This year’s team has had a good fortune of having four veteran players returning: David Boone, Ken Neely. Erie Robinson, and Quentin Stephens. These young men. along with the rest of their tcam- matcs:Corncll Myrick.Clifford Robinson, Mau- rice Smith, Richard Wells, George Williams and Shawn Hall, played a very good season. At the start of the season, the Eagles faced Galileo. The game started off slow, but by the end of the first half, the Eagles had a 20 point lead. At the finish of the game, the final score was: Washington 100-GaIilco 67. Next the Jaguars came to Washington and the Eagles put their teamwork together to blow away the Jaguars 100-52. The Indians were no match for the Eagles this season. The Eagles easily won 90-50 play- ing their starters only in the first and third quarters. After a loss to the Bears in the pre-season, the Eagles came back for a victorious win 77-69. David Boone led all scorers with 26 pts., Mau- rice Smith with 18, Ken Neely with 14 and Quentin Stephens had 8. When the Eagles played O'Connell, it was once again a no match game. The Eagles slip- ped passed the Boilermakers 67-33. With the help of Eric Robinson's passing and penetration to the basket, the Eagles beat the Mustangs 59-53. Boone hit 20 pts. and Ste- phens 15. Smith hit 16 pts. to once again help the win. Against Balboa, the duo of Boone and Ste- phens overwhelmed the Bucs, 87-64. Boone scored 32 pts. and grabbed 14 rebounds and Stephens had 25 pts.. 20 rebounds and five blocked shots. Smith scored 14 pts. to add to the score. The Eagles only loss in the season was against Wilson. The Warriors won 57-49 in overtime. In the play-offs, it was a rematch against Wilson, and the Eagles were prepared. With revenge on their minds, due to losing to Wilson for the past three years, the Eagles were deter- mined to win, and they did. It was a close game in which the highest lead was between one and three points until the final quarter. Stephens hit a free throw to make the score 51-47 and Rob- inson sank the front end of a one-and-onc situa- tion to give Washington a 52-47 advantage. The final score of the game was 52-49. Boone was the only player with a double figure score of 21 pts. The championship game against Lincoln was a very exciting one. At the end of the first quar- ter, the Eagles were up by 9 pts., but the Eagles' determination was much stronger than the Mustangs, although at one time they were behind by 3 pts. When Quentin Stephens rebounded a missed shot and scored the game's winning point, it was not enough. He clinched another rebounded shot and sent a length-of the-court pass to Richard Wells, who scoied the final basket of the game. The final score was 71-68 and the Eagles were the new city champi- ons and off to the Tournament of Champions. David Boone was the game’s highest scorer with 23 pts. It's been a great honor having all these young men representing George Washington High, and we wish them well in their future. In their pre-season they had one win against Star of the Sea. As their regular season began, the team showed much improvement. Under the coaching of Tom Swartz, the Lady Eagles had many anticipa- tions and high hopes only to be disappointed by a no win season. With only one player leaving, their hopes will be more anticipated with returning players: Ann Venen- ciano, Monetta White, Kathleen Maruoka, Lynne Mori, Maite Petoteguy, Tracy Randolph. Angela Per- riliat, Swanee Satchell, Monique Petoteguy and Denise Wright, all hoping for a victorious season next year. Front Row (L to R) — C. Myers, S. A coach can be a teacher, a friend, and a leader. A coach works with a team to create something worthwhile ... those who try their best can be proud of the results. A coach has patience. He knows that when his team doesn’t win, it s not the end of the world. A coach may make a mistake, but after all he is only human. The coaching staff of George Washington High is one of the best in its times. They hold their heads high for the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Among the great staff, after 28 years of dedication as f 1 n . eac er an coach, Mrs. Frances Zinns retired. Most Valuable Player, and the Kenco Award. In addition, the Surveyor Sports’ Section has started a new tradition at Washington — “The Hall of Fame.” The Hall of Fame was designed to honor all the top senior athletes of the fall sports who were chosen by their respective coaches. This year 15 athletes were chosen to represent our first Hall of Fame, and each one of them deserves this honor. We apologize to all those who participated in spring sports for our deadline comes in February. Congratulations to all those outstanding senior athletes of 1982! SUPER BOWL CHAMPS On January 24, 1982, otherwise known as Super Bowl Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers won, for the first time in their history, the Super Bowl Championship and claimed their title as World Cham- pions. With great players such as Joe Montana, Dwight Clark, Jack Reynolds, Dwight Hicks, Ronnie Lott, Charle Young and Fred Dean, the 49ers put their plays together with the help of Coach Bill Walsh and proved to world that they were Number 1 by beating the Cincinnatti Bengals 26-21. The 49ers weren’t the only ones who were celebrating. Here in San Francisco, the fans went wild. The whole city just lit up and fans from everywhere were shouting and parading in the streets letting the world know of the victory. In honor of the champs, San Francisco held a celebration parade in which 500,000 people show- ed up. We, the yearbook staff of George Washington High, con- gratulate the 49ers and hope they continue their great success in the seasons to come. SPORT (SPORT),n. active play, a game, etc. taken up for exercise or pleasure and, sometimes as a profession. (Football, basket- ball, baseball etc, are sports.) This section was put together for those actively involved in sports and for those who enjoy sports altogether. For those who don’t know what a sport is or what it means, the definition is there for you. In putting this section together, so that it meant something, it took a lot of time and effort, a lot of learning, and a lot of teaching. I’ve enjoyed the experience of cropping pictures, drawing up quad-paks, meeting deadlines and everything else one has to do to put a yearbook together. I’ve accomplished something that I wasn’t too sure about in the beginning and now that it’s finished everything will have a positive outlook in the future. I d like to thank LINDA INOUYE, LISA LO AND MONEQUIE SHORT for putting up with my constant nagging to get things done, especially Monequie, MY OFFICIAL PICTURE STAMPER, without you there it wouldn’t of been the way it’s been. To ANTHONY ABEJURO AND PAT BRIDGES, no photographers, no pictures, no section! I wouldn’t have had a section without your photographic abilities. Thanks, you two helped a lot. To MRS. MARCUS, just knowing that you would be there if I ever needed your help made my day! Thank You! SPECIAL THANKS TO: HUMBERTO RUIZ for drawing my divider page. SANFORD SMITH for helping with the last minute things, BOB CLAY for the assistance that you gave which was greatly needed, and to my mom, MARIA F. George Washington High was going through some great changes. I hope this yearbook reflects those changing times. The mechanical procedures of a yearbook do not change much, at times test the sanity of the editors, advisor, and staff. The yearbook staff this year consisted of some who watched things happen, some who wondered what happened, and for- tunately some who made them happen. To those who produced ideas and made them happen, I hope they share the satisfaction of completing this yearbook. Very special thanks to the photographers, Patricia Bridges and Anthony Abejuro; Tom Walker of Taylor Publishing Co.; Haag Photos; and the artists, Paul Mica and Humberto Ruiz.
