This year's team had four experienced starters return- ing. They were led by Junior forward David Boone, Junior center Quen- tin Stephens, Senior guard Carl Storey, and Senior forward Norman Grant. Other members on the team who had an excellent season were Ken Neely, Eric Robinson, Bill Lassiter, Todd Renfrew, Maurice Robin- son, Ricky Myers, and Ernest Robins. The first league game was against Balboa which Washington won 83- 53, led by David Boone with the Eagles coming out on top 80-69. David Boone's career high 41 points and Quentin Stephens 25 points and numerous rebounds helped Washington beat Mission 99-83. The next game was against league leading Wilson. The Eagles had many chances to win, but lost to Wilson 77-69. Norman Grant's 17 points, David Boone's 20 points, and Quentin Stephen's 16 points were enough to lead Washington past McAteer 71-62. The following game the Eagles crushed O'Connell 103-51, behind David Boone’s 23 points and Quen- tin Stephen's 22 points. David Boone's 20 points and Quentin Stephens' defense with Ken Neely’s clutch free throws and Carl Storey’s great ball handling helped Washington to defeat highly rated Lincoln 81-78 OT. Lowell was the next victim, when the Eagles scalped the Indian 63-48. The Eagles played Lincoln in the play-offs and beat them with a win- ning score 79-67. Throughout the season, the girls began to improve and showed a great deal of ability game after game: they played well and gave it all they had. The team is a very young team with only four seniors: Jamie Yamamura, Reg- ina Quilala, Juliet Martin and Lori McLoughlin. The rest is made up of juniors and sophomores, hoping to return next year for a better season. In J.V. basketball, Washington was ranked on top. Top scoring players like Cornell Myrick and Bobby Rainey made each game exciting. Credit is also highly given to Daryl Turner — Captain, Shawn Hall, Mike Powell, Aaron Brown, Edward Hunter, Troy Samson, and Mike Kemp. Under great coaching by Coach Firpo, the Eagles were able to beat each team by a 2-3 point margin. The J.V. Eagles’ only loss was to Balboa in an overtime. On a cold December day, the freshmen successfully raised funds and spirit with a car wash. Looking toward the future, the class began planning activities and fund raisers for the years ahead. The class of '83 earned funds through two car washes, and sold chow mein, pizza bread and cotton candy. They organized a rally to raise spirit, and to pro- mote their dance, Together. The class successfully sold t- shirts, buttons, and carnations. Said Bettina Poon and Mary Daquioag, We think our class has a lot of spirit and in the years to come we see even more spirit and unity at Washington.” The juniors had a sales week in which they sold chow mein, and flower and balloon grams also they participated in the May Festival. The class of '82 engaged in a picnic, a pizza night, a skating party, and plan- ned a school dance with the aim of building spirit and increasing their treasury for next year's graduation and prom. The graduating class of GWHS sold candy, chow mein and stuffed animals. Many senior activities included: A night at Far- rell's Ice-Cream Parlor, Senior Activity Day, the Spring Ball, Pizza Night, Prom on May 15 at the St. Francis Hotel, Grad Night at Disneyland and planned grad trips to Hawaii and a Mexican Cruise. Said the senior class president Kevin Broussard, The class of '81 has shown that they have a great deal of spirit and pride in themselves. They should, for they have faced con- siderable odds and they have surpassed them. In my opinion, the class of'81 is 1!” T. Sophomores show off their t-shirts. 2. We do windows, too! 3. Some ot their projects extended from GWHS into the community and were a benefit not only to students, but to the city of San Francisco. Chow mein, candy, and flower sales proved to be successful and dependable money-makers in 1980-81. Within the school, original fund raising projects abounded, and each club and organization used creativity in alloting their hard earned funds toward worthwhile projects. Some of the more successful club activities were: dances, paper recycling, tree planting, parties, refreshment booths at games, an Alumni dinner, vaude- ville show, participation in the cerebral palsy telethon, Miss Mr. Chinatown pageant, cultural nights, tutoring, health fairs, scholarships, and community awareness projects. The goals of GWHS's diverse clubs and organizations ranged from club unity to school and community awareness, and 1980-81 was a year marked with success in attaining beneficial results for all. f. The experience was wonderful and exciting. Six weeks were spent in rehearsal and the hard work resulted in a highly suc- cessful production which received large and warm audi- ences, good reviews, and a good size profit from ticket sales. Mr. Franklin organized the play's publicity, ticket arrangements, and refreshments, while Mr. Tev- enan produced the set The cast and crew agreed the hard work was well worth it, and The Curi- ous Savage proved a profitable venture to all those who partici- pated and attended. In the 80-81 school year sources were offered in electron- ics, graphic arts, auto mechan- ics, and metal and woodworking. The goal of the metal and wood shops is to teach the skills needed and technology required in operating machinery by com- pleting assigned projects. Elec- tronics students agreed the course was fun and exciting. The aim of the class was to prepare students for independent living and future careers in the field. The auto shop classes were taught the basic operations of automobiles and consumer awareness. The course serves as an introduction to mechanics, and plans to teach such basic as car tune-ups, minor repairs, and giving those students with future careers in mechanics a begin- ning in their training. The Home Economics depart- ment consisted of Clothing 1-5, Child Care 1 and 2, and Foods 1- 3. Not only did the classes learn job skills and receive on the job training, but students were taught basic living fundamentals. The basic goal of the art depart- ment was the find and enrich tal- ent, while at the same time giving all students some art experience they enjoy. Says Ms. Gadas, I love teaching art!” 1. Many people have contributed their talents and they should be recognized. The Surveyor staff would like to thank: Tom Walker, a representative from Taylor Publishing Co.; Jake Barker of School Productions Inc.; Bob Callister of Kee Coleman Studios; Brooks; Fireside; and Hag camera stores. If you had dropped by Rm. 8 third period any day this year, you would have noticed many students busily involved in yearbook production. Mimi Tom. Karen Sunton. Tom Poon, Aline Jung. Reed Minkin, Sophie Wong, and Linda Rich- ards put in extra time to make each indi- vidual section a success. Other students who were particularly motivated were Mary Liu, Nancy Chan, Karrie Ramm, and Jerome Brohovici. The photography work was done mainly by Wade Sumner and Tim Wong. The artwork throughout the book was drawn by Tim Wong, Glenn Chu, Guy LaCrosby. Kelly Low, Gary Tom, Paul Mica, Catherine Wong, and Raymond Fu. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all of the teachers and administrators, especially our sponsor. Mrs. Marcus, for their outstanding sup- port and cooperation that made this book possible. This past year has been a valuable one for me, and I hope that this year's Surve- yor was able to capture a few memorable moments in everyone’s high school experience. Meg Halsey Editor. I also wish to thank the members of the Surveyor staff, because without their helpfulness, this section would not have been possible. A special wish for Sophie, Clarissa, Louisa, Wade, and Tim: May your futures bring as much laughter and good times as you five have given me — good luck, and I’ll miss you. She attended San Francisco State College and the University ot California at U.C. Berkeley, her majors being music and physical education. Miss Goldberg came to George Washington in 1971, after serving many years at Poly Technical High School. Upon the request of our principal, she began instructing Family Life courses. Thus began a warm and fondly remembered relationship with students and faculty alike which lasted for many, many years. Her absence has been a great loss to all of us. George Washington will remember the nine years of dedication Miss Eunice Goldberg gave to us. Having the opportunity to be a yearbook photographer I have learned true patience. First, I would like to thank Mrs. Marcus for her patience when she needed pictures that had not even been taken yet. Also thanks to Tim, who without his efforts the photography of this book would not have been completed. Sophie, Tom, Mimi, Reed, Linda, Aline; thanks for having patience with me in my efforts as pho- tographer. To the Class of '81,1 feel this page is tor you, and these pictures are a tew things we all will remember Karen; thanks for the times and truth we both have shared. Remember Phil, 1:21.
