With the deadline so early, many sports had to be left out. 1 tried to fill every page with as many pictures as I can, because we have some great athletes. This is my first and last year on the staff. It took a lot out of me, but it was worth it. I hope that the sports section is satisfactory to all the students and members of Washington. I would like to thank Mrs. Camozzi for having faith in me to do the job, and I would like to thank the coaches for their cooperation. I enjoyed working with the Surveyor staff and wish them luck next year. James Ng Sports Editor Varsity Football The Eagles had a disappointing 1-5-1 season, but gave their rooters some exciting moments. In their opening game against Mission a 72-yard touch- down run was called back by a penalty, and three other penalties held the luckless Eagles from scoring the six inch line before losing 6-0. After being routed by Lowell 26-0 and 39-6 by Galileo, the Eagles bounced back holding playoff bound Balboa to 0-0 until the Bucs scored 21 points in the fourth quarter. In the annual Bell game, our varsity had the Mustangs tied 12-12 in the fourth quarter. Lincoln posted an 18-12 victory in the final two minutes. The Eagles finally fired up and defeated Wilson 20-12. In the final game, the Eagles knocked McAteer out of the playoffs in a 0-0 tic. Football Team The Soph-Frosh football team enjoyed an outsanding season in 1978. The disruptive start of school caused them to get off to a slow start but by the time the strike was over and all players had reported, the team was unstopablc. The team produced some good sophomore players who should be good varsity players in 1980. Some of these were Brian Rhodes, Robert Mongomery, Gene Chao, James Yelton, Adan Allen, Williams Tavares, Ed Louie, Ty Kushner, and Robert Huntley. The freshmen class also had its share of talent and they should be the heart of next year’s team. Among them were Russell Hall, Renard Ford, Kevin Stampley and Tony Valosak. The unfortunate aspect of the season was the injuries some of the team’s best players. These were: I.eon Salem, Tony Watt, Kevin Bryd, and John Fukua. Hopefully these players will heal and be as good as ever. Much credit to the teams success also to James Ng and Tracy Wong for their hard work as managers. 2nd Place Winners Record Wash 6-60 Gal Wash 6- 6 Lincoln Wash 12- 6 Bal Wash 26-16 Lowell Wash 18- 6 Mission 124 GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL TEAM lit ROW H Wong. Wrestling is a very different sport. It takes time to learn all the moves and it’s a one on one match. Every person gets only one chance at each meet. No matter how many points are given to one person, the pin determines the match. Everyone works hard to win. If he loses, he cheers for his teammate. Most of the members of the wrestling team are first year wrestlers with the exception of J. V. 1146’s Doug Murakami, 105’s Ira Bibins, Il4’s Toshio Takeshita, 122’s John Stern, 129-135’s Hank Kelin, l40’s Matt Wayne, Darius Khadjenouri, 167’s Kevin Dixson, and 193’s Joe Byrne. With first years wrestlers 95’s Nick Dierauf, 129-135’s James Ng, 140’s Gene Cha, 145’s Melvin Huie. Most of all we want to thank our coaches Mr. Block Mr. Busic for training us and putting up with us. Also, a special thanks to our female wrestlers and cheering section Nancy Lew, Lynne Murakami, Kari Wong, and Suzanne Naito. Due to the lack of true dedication and the many injuries that plagued them this season, the Eagles wrestling team placed 6th in All-City. Next year, the mother hen hopes to hatch a new nest of champions The wrestlers that you see today are striving to win Trying to score some team points Their man they want to pin He diets like a champion, his training program’s tough And when the month of March is here Well boy he’s had enough No matter who does win or lose All these kids have pride And once a match is over You know they all tried. 138 Badminton From. We have finally managed to get the chaos together, and put it in some sort of logical order. CULTURAL CLUBS are on pages 148 150, HELP AND SERVICE organizations on 152-155, ACADEMIC endeavors on 156-158, and miscellaneous FUN or ATHLETIC groups can be found on 159-161. The paragraphs accompanying the pictures were written by club associates. Many groups didn’t submit a paragraph, and for these we listed the names of the club memebers. We apologize for not including the names for all the groups. It would not be fair for one group to have both names and a paragraph and another to have no recognition at all. I wish to thank the section’s two photgraphers, James Ng and Ron Lee. Special acknowledgements to Ron for marching to his own drummer and his valiant attempts to pull the whole ship down with him. Many thanks to the groups who did cooperate, and to the student artists who contributed their works to fill these pages. I also wish to thank Allison Wong and Chrysanthe Paxinos for working on layouts. Hope you all enjoy looking through our production, and appreciate the care taken to print the pictures with everyone looking reasonably normal (If possible!) Ad. Astra, Willow Munger Editor Groups, Clubs, and Organizations This club was originated a year ago. Because of its size, it has been seperated into two branches, Cantonese and Mandarin. The memebers of this club are free to participate in any one of these two branches. Each branch has officers and they arc chosen by their own branch members for a semester term. The main purpose in establishing this club is to assist students who have difficulty with their aca- demic work in the school. In addition, there are other purposessuch as helping students get acq- uainted with each other, to glorify the Chinese cul- ture, and to enrich the students extracurriculum. Because the members arc very cooperative and responsible, the club is doing quite well now and will be even better in the future. Chinese Foreign Students The main activity of the Spanish club was to plan a trip to Mexico this summer and they organized various fund raising activities to make this project possible. Their trip was arranged by the American Institute for Foreign Study and includes a one-week stay in Mexico City with side trips to Taxco, Cuer- navaca. and Acapulco. I I i Japanese Club The Japanese Club participates in many activities in school as well as in the community. In school, the club participates in the candy sales. May Festival, and athletic competition between clubs. In the community, the club participates in the Fall Festival and the Cherry Blossom Festival. This year, our club joined with Lowell’s Japanese Club to par- ticipate in a dance. We are going to plan more activities to get the two schools together. Korean Club The Korean Club of George Washington High School was organized in 1976. The purpose of the club is for Korean stu- dents to get to know each other and to introduce the Korean culture. We have a hundred members. Mr. Woo has been helping us as a sponsor since 1976. We have a picnic and dance party twice a year, two Korean Culture nights, and we publish a club book annually which contains the writings of members. We have our meeting every other Friday and always wel- come new members. 150 Recycling Club Each week the recycling club receives paper from students bringing their registry boxes down. When there is enough paper collected, we load it into a truck and take it to the recycling plant. We receive a cer- tain amount of money for each ton. In this process, we conserve trees and energy. Thus, Washington contributes to the conservation of the environment. Red Cross The Red Cross Club provides a number of special functions and services for Washington. They hold a blood drive for Irwin Memorial Blood Bank They also arrange first aid and CPR classes for interested Washington students. Part of the club is also part of forming a youth disaster team. These services along with the annual community service chapter fund raiser comprise most of the club’s activities. 151 The GSS is a service organization consisting of fifty mem- bers. These fulfill requested services for the school and com- munity Services for the school consists of office services, library duties, hostessing the girls’ basketball tournament, painting the bleachers, ushering at graduation and school assemblies, guarding the football field at home games, sweep- ing the bleachers before graduation, hostessing a MUN con- ference and Casino Night, inspectors for SWEEP, and coat checkers for school dances. The senior GSS members (along with the senior Eagles) serve as Senior Advisers. They help the freshmen get better acquainted with the school by giving them an orientation on their first day. This year the GSS went to Shriner’s Hospital for the crip- pled children, and helped them make costumes for Hallow- een. We also sponsored the Great American Smokcout Week for the American Cancer Society; donated candy to St. Antho- ny’s for Christmas; and donated $50.00 to the Cerebral Palsy telethon. General Service Society The Eagles are a group of students who service the school and the community. For example, the Eagles have been patrol- ing the football field during home games, we have been sen- ior advisors to new students, we have been ushers for assem- blies. guards for graduation and have been visiting hospitals. Each member maintains the minimum requirements and a good school record. At the end of the year a group of appli- cants are given the chance to enter the service society and only those who fulfill the requirements are given the privilege to join. The Eagles have gone through many changes during the years and through these years Mr. Tom Swartz has been the man who kept the service society on its feet. We thank you Mr. Swartz for being our sponsor and wish the best of luck in the following years. 152 Psycho Club Back rou I. to Rj David h uu. Fram is Parachaso. Andy Heyneman, Air. Leach. With the help of classes, they will be keeping our campus clean as well as promoting school spirit. They came up with something original, a walnut sale. It is the same principal as carnations; only you send walnuts. Next semester, it is to be hoped that the Psycho Club will be able to promote more things. With their new ideas, they ’re sure to bring the school spirit out of everyone. Kim Wong Eagle Newspaper Letter Society The George Washington High School letter Society is joined together in order to promote wholesome athletic activities for the members of the societyand the George Washington Student Body. We try to pass resolutions which will benefit the peoples of our countries. The topics of these resolutions are pre- selected and change every year. We also like to party . . 158 A Xu ,s Backgam- mon Backgammon, one of the oldest games around, is not a pure strategy game like chess. However it is far from a game of pure chance, as beginners in the club arc quick to find out. The backgammon club meets daily during lunch in Mr. Serra’s classroom to play individual and team matches. During play the more experienced play- ers teach new club members basic strategies to improve their game. Last year G.W.H.S. won 5 straight city tournaments against other high schools including Lowell. Again this year our team is number one. Bowling Washington High School Intramural Bowl- ing league was established for students inter- ested in recreational and social activities via bowling. What most Washington students don’t realize is that this book is produced 100% by hardworking and dedicated students, whose goal is to put out the most memorable yearbook that they possibly can. This year we were plagued by never-ending problems with the Teacher’s Strike, our change from Josten’s Yearbook Co. to Taylor Yearbook Co., the splitting of our staff into two separate groups, and the bad reputation we have received from last year’s yearbook. Although we had our problems, these problems made us even more determined to produce the best quality and most memorable book we could. I wish to thank the following people, for this book would not have been possible without them . .. Ms. Camozzi, who helped us with the change of companies, and helped smooth out some of the major difficulties we faced during production. Mr. David Setnicker, our Advisor from Taylor Yearbook Co. A special thanks to Dave Hall, our Financial Director. I also wish to thank .. . James Ng, Nancy Lew, Willow Munger, Emin Oliver, and Lisa Pearson, the sec- tion editors . . . without their help this yearbook would be non-existent. above all I want to say that this past year has been very special for me, and I hope that future editors will find it as positive an experience as I have.
