In Memory Of Jennifer Irene Ignacio (August 15, 1961-September 16, 1977) It is said that only the good die young. This certainly holds true for George Washington's student and Varsity Cheerleader, Jennifer Ignacio. She was only 16 years old when she died in an automobile accident on September 16, 1977, on the way to Washington's first var- sity football game. jeni was well liked by all those who knew her and loved by those who were close to her. Her death touched every student at Washington, even those who never had the pleasure of knowing her. The bulletin announcement, the moment of silence that was observed in her memory over KGW, the letters of sympathy sent to Washington from various schools and posted in the main hallway, showed those who didn't know her that she was a very special young lady. It is a football tradition for a team to dedi- cate the season and wear black bands on their jerseys when a member of the team passes away. This year's Varsity Football Team dedi- cated the season to Jeni. They wore black bands on their jerseys because she was a member of the team. During the Summer of '77 Jeni typed letters, ran errands, and looked up the eligi- bility of each player on the team. She never missed a pre-season passing league game. Jeni cheered her heart out for her Eagles and in return the Eagles football team played their heart out for their Jeni. Jeni will always be loved and missed by everyone, but no matter how many years pass, Jeni will never be forgotten ... Cheer on, Jeni, we'll always love you! 2 Dedication Chad Reade m Lillian Powell Chad Reade has been with the GWHS Boy's P.E. Department since 1948, and became head of the de- partment in 1963. During his thirty year career at Washington, he has served as coach to four cham- pionship teams. In 1953, Mr. Reade, as assistant coach, helped lead Washington's track team to victory. Later in 1958 our tennis team also emerged victorious. In additon, Mr. Reade coached Washing- ton's first AAA Football Championship in 1960. Finally, his latest triumphs as a coach took place with Washington's complete sweep of the AAA, and the All Metropolitan fencing competitions. Mr. Reade has taught many such notables as John- ny Mathis, Bob Hurley, Kelly Waterfield, and Jimmy Sochor. Five principals have been at Washington during the past thirty years. “Washington, says Mr. Reade, is still Number One in the city. He is retiring to the mountains to go fishing, and all of us at Washington wish our best to Chad Reade. Thank you for your dedication to our school. As the Class of 1978 bids farewell to George Wash- ington High this June, so will Mr. Edward Gorham. Mr. Gorham will be retiring, thereby terminating a 40 year devotion to teaching. Mr. Gorham's teaching career began at Cal Berk- eley in 1938. He was a teaching assistant in math while attending graduate school. At the time, he aspired to attain a Ph.D. and to become a college instructor. However, he found himself the victim of a wantonly cruel depression. With not much of a choice, he had to abandon his aspiration. Mr. Gorham received his appointment as a full time teacher in 1943. His first assignment was at Francisco Junior High in 1946. He taught math and science. In 1947, Mr. Gorham was assigned to what was to become his home school , George Wash- ington High. He taught math, chemistry, and phy- sics during his first years at Washington, before settling into one subject. Mr. Gorham has taught physics exclusively for 29 years. Mr. Gorham has devoted a great deal of his own free time over the years to the gargantuan task of correcting programming errors. He thereby de- serves due acclamation from the entire student body. Mr. Gorham has been a devoted teacher who thoroughly enjoys his work. He retires with a grin, a scowl, and the tears of many yesterdays. We bid him the fondest of farewells for a job magnani- mously done. Edward Gorham At the end of the fall semester, a good friend, Mrs. Lillian Powell, one of our three vice-principals, wound up a long and exciting career in education. Mrs. Powell only spent three years at Washington, but she said they were the happiest of her career . Her career started in New Orleans Louisiana and fin- ally brought her to the Bay Area before coming to Washington. Her broad education includes a B.A. at Dillard University in Louisiana, a Master's in Art at S.F. State College and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Mississippi. While at Washington, under three different prin- cipals, Saul Madfes, Ralph Kauer, and Allen Tor- lakson, Mrs. Powell saw three classes graduate. She has received many favorable responses from stu- dents and teachers. She now plans to do a great deal of traveling. We here at Washington will truly miss Mrs. Powell because of the great work she did and the warmth and friendship she gave us. Thank you. Surveyor Special Playoffs-Wash. Vs. Galileo Throw it to Nester.' DeVaughn runs interference for Garret. The Eagles' first round playoff game against Galileo looked like their last game of the season for awhile, but the Eagles refused to die. Late in the final quarter while captain Stacey Cooper and teammates prayed on the side- lines, quarterback Keith Sanford hit Nestor Fernandez in the end zone to tie the game. After Galileo's fatal fum- ble with less than 2 minutes to play, a Sanford to Adams pass and a De- Vaughn two yard ramble got the Ea- gles into the end zone and into Tur- key Day. Never before have Washing- ton fans witnessed such a miraculous comeback. Their incredible 12 to 6 victory brought the Eagles one victory away rrom the city championship. Valdez slides by Galileo. It worked! Sanford fakes the handoff to Yoldi Surveyor Special Turkey Day!! The ultimate Turkey Day matchup, Washington vs. Lowell, took place on Thanksgiving Day, 1977. When it was all over, the Eagles were only three points short of the city championship. A Lowell fourth quarter field goal had deprived the Eagles of what they all had worked so long and so hard for. Vet, the team's accomplishiments were not all for nothing. The season was the Eagle's best in several years, and to come as far as they did was a great accomplish- ment in itself. The Eagles' 1977 Varsity Football team's stupendous year and players will be remem- bered by many for years to come. Coach Ruane congradulates Coach Burns after the game. Cooper trucks for a first down after fak- ing the punt. Her father works for the Govt. Of Israel and she plans to stay here in the U.S. for another year and a half before returning to Israel to stay forever. Osnat chose Washington because she heard about our fine music program. She is interested in vocal music and wants to go into music as a pro- fession. When asked if she had a vacation would she re- turn to the states she replied, Yes I would. I like it very much here but home is the best! This was the last page of the yearbook to be completed. So since I'm the editor, I decided what was going to fill this space ... what an ego trip, huh? What I really wanted to do is take a minute to thank all the people on the yearbook staff for turning out what I think is one of the best books ever. The following deserve much credit; Tyler Gee and Phil McIntosh for all the long hours they worked in their darkrooms and all the film they burned. If they had been paid by the hour, they would both be rich; Claire Camozzi, for her patience when I dictated the class, and her discipline when I didn't dictate the class; The Executive Council, for paying our debt; Jim Howell, our representative from Josten's American Yearbook Company; Gail and Kerry Onishi, for soliciting several hundred dollars worth of ads, and for letting me drive their Chevelle down Balboa Street; Sandy Hannan, for single-handedly typing up the whole senior index; Howard Zee, for threatening to sue one of our sponsors if they didn't cough the money for the ad; Kelvin Louie, for buying my OM-1 so I could buy my OM-2; Benson Loui, for working overtime; and the rest of the yearbook staff: Garret, Phil, Phil, Ann, P-nut, Kathy, Ken, Jay, and contributing photographer Mike Block. Special thanks to God ... Amen. Off the field the Eagles suffered a great loss. Jennifer Ignacio, who was a cheerleader and a great friend of the team, was killed in an automobile accident on the way to a pre-season game against Mills High School in Burlingame. The season was then dedicated to her. In addition, midway through the season with a 4-1 record, the Eagles were told they had to forfeit 3 of their games due to an ineligible player. However, after a gallant effort by players, coaches, and friends, the decision was reversed. On the field, the Eagles had one of their best seasons ever. After two pre-season losses, the Eagles beat Wilson, Lowell, and Balboa. The Eagles then fell to Galileo but were able to get back on the winning track by beating Lincoln, thus regaining the bell. The Eagles lost for a second time this season to Mission, but finished the regular season by whipping McAteer. In the playoffs, the Eagles beat Galileo 12-6 in a heart stopper. In the Turkey Day Championship game, the Eagles lost by a score of 10-7 on a Lowell 27-yard field goal. Even though the Eagles didn't win the Championship, they should be credited with one exciting season. Some of the players who made it possible were Keith Sanford, Mike Adams, Humphrey Garrett, Tony Holyfield, Tom Brady, and Stacey Cooper. Some of next year's returning players include John Marksman, Jerome Matthews, Mark Chase, and Darryl Valdez. Geoff DeVaughn looks for a hole. Humphrey Garret turns upheld for a long gainer. The Soph.V. football team got off to a shakey start this season with two losses but came back strong to win 3 in a row before bowing to Bal in the last game. The team had the attitude that it never lost a game but just ran out of time. Keith Sato was the best player averaging over 100 yards running and 6 defensive tackles a game. Other outstanding halfbacks were dangerous Darius Khadjinouri, Vincent Harris, Jeffery Timms, Chris Smith and John Stern. The line was led by K. C. Hultman, Aaron Summer, Mike Amos, Joe Ferrero and John Beachamp. The outside pass catching and sweep blocking were shared by team captain Paul Williams, Mike Martiney and Seth Goldsmith. On defense Yarnell Bremby closed the middle while Harry Kayanjian, Kevin Dixon, James Keenan and Jeff Mouson stopped the outside. It was a good season and much was gained by the players, the fans, and the coaches. The offense lines up. The team ended their season with a 7 and 1 league record, beating Lincoln in the championship 65-51 to put the icing on the cake. Outstanding players were All City candidate Norman Ng, who averaged better than 10 points per game, All City candidate Mitchell Lam, who averaged 11 plus points per game, and probably pulled down more rebounds than anyone in the league, and Lawrence Lee and Randy Rhinehart, who each netted better than 10 points per game! The 115's Basketball team had a great season this year, until the championship game when they lost to Balboa by a heart-breaking 50-51. Our team finished with a 6 and 2 league record, beating McAteer 63-41, in the play- offs. This year's 115's had no returning players from last year's team. Despite the lack of experience, they played quite well together and had an excellent season. Star- ring for the 115's were Robert Dumandan, All City can- didate and leading scorer for the Eagles, All City can- didate Malvin Wong, who averaged more than 9 points per game, Mark Gyotoku, who scored better than 10 points per game, and Tony Byrd and Bernard Murphy who contributed greatly to a successful team. Varsity Basketball The 1978 Varsity basketball team had a very successful season, making it all the way to the playoffs. The Eagles fought all the way but lost to roundrobin Champs, Balboa, by one point. Coach McGrath should surely be proud of his team's 5-4 record. There were excellent performances this year by several players. 5'9 guard Reggie Lewis led the Eagles in scoring with a 26.5 average. Reggie, also known as Rocket , scored 37 points in our season opener against Galileo. I'm sure Reggie, a senior, is going to be missed by basketball fans, he has been playing varsity basketball since his sophmore year here at Washington. 6'3 center Lamar Baker has led the team in rebounds this year, snatching 39 rebounds within the first four games this season. Lamar is an exciting player to watch. He will be just as exciting when he returns next year. Alot of credit should be given to other players such as Tommy Frazier, who was out for 5 games. On his big comeback against O'Connell, Tommy scored 28 points! He will also be returning next year. Hum- phrey Garrett, loved most by Eagle fans, kept the team up, he has as much spirit as the cheerleaders. Let us not forget the excellent performances by Paul Burger, Eric Gaskin, Derek Lott, Doug Young, and Dexter Thom- as. Paul, Eric and Dexter are all Juniors this year. These fine players will be returning next year, and the Eagle Varsity basketball team is expected to be a good one. After losing to Mission, Washington J.V.'s proved, You can't keep a good team down, and went on to defeat Wilson, Balboa and McAteer in great games. Senior Robert Ronconi was the Eagle's top varsity finisher, placing 27th in the All- City meet in which over a hundred runners from eight schools ran. Nick Block, Nelson Young, Don West, and Anthony Scott were the next four Eagles to finish. The highly spirited Washington Girl's Tennis Team fin- ished their season with an 8 and 2 record. The seasons record reflected the outstanding coaching by Ms. Podesta. The team was led by the 1 seed Cathy Wong, a sopho- more, who dominated the court with her service and volley game. The 2 seed Tracey Frazier, also a sophomore, made a good showing this season by making it to the quarter finals in All-City. Senior Lorraine Hirano, the 3, seed finished the season with an excellent record of 9 and 1. The 1 doubles team consisted of senior Lynn Sumida and junior Kerry Onishi. Obviously a good combination was formed as showed by their season's record of 9 and 1. Laura Chin and Karen Kauffman, both juniors, combined to make up the zany 2 doubles team. Next season the tennis team will be fortunate to have 5 of 7 starters back for another successful season. They beat Lincoln in the finals 65-61. The game against Lincoln was a close match for the Eagles, but they never gave up, even up until the forth quarter when they were trailing by as mcuh as ten points. They also earned a berth in the Tournament of Champions being held for the first time for girls basketball. Exceptional players again this year were seniors Serprenia Goins and Lorraine Hirano. Serprenia was one of the top scorers averging over 14 points a game, and Lorraine with her usual floor game and great ball handling. Mazetta Garret had another great season averging 13.0 points. Sophomore Ros- siland Rogers had a fantastic season, she was the leading scorer, averging 15 points and 9 rebounds per game.
