Despite a mediocre 3-5 record, the Eagles varsity football team had an exciting season filled with many spirited and dedicated players. Probably the most deadly and exciting offensive weapon the Eagles featured was the Keith Sanford to Darryl Matthew’s bomb which ac- counted for many Eagles scores. Other outstanding players were running backs Timmy Jefferson, Ken- ny Mays, and Bart Yoldi, receivers All-City Darryl Matthews, Tom Brady and Tony Gilton, and linemen Gus Rendon, Jason Devine, Mike Del Bianco, and John McGuire. Coach Ruane is looking forward to the return of Bart Yoldi, Mike Adams, Tom Brady, Stacey Cooper, Kevin Robinson, and quarterback Keith Sanford. The Soph-JV football team went through the season undefeated and captured the championship. The offensive line, anchored by Mark Vann, Fred Sandlin, Dave Lim, Dan Lee, Ronnie Hall and Buck Runnels, opened the holes that running backs Cedric Stockard, Darryl Valdez, Paul Burger and Joe Ng blasted through. Their runs along with the Paul Salazar specials, were initiated with the deft hand-offs of quarterback Adrian Boone. The real key to the season's success was the tenacious defense that held Balboa to no first-downs in a 2-0 victory. The defensive ends, Tom Walsh and Paul Burger, forced plays inside where the opposition ran into John Marksman, Mark Chase and Ken Tudhope. The defensive halfbacks, Richard Yanikian, Darryl Valdez and Cedric Stockard cut down Galileo's dangerous passing attack to clinch the title. Paul Burger, Darryl Valdez and Mark Chase were voted captains by their teammates. The season and its outcome will be treas- ured for many years by the team and its coaches, Izzy Relampa- gos, Chris Brooks and Tom Swartz. Adrian Boone pitches out. The 125's entered the playoffs with a 6-2 league record. They beat Mission in the first round of the playoffs, and had to face Balboa for the Championship. Unfortunately, the Eagles ran out of gas. Trailing by only two points after three quarters, Washington could come back no more. They lost the championship game, 73-57. Nevertheless, Mr. A's 125's turned in a good season. Starring for the 125's were: Troy Batups, the team's leading scorer with 17-plus points per game, All-City Greg Jones, who netted better than 14 a game, Dexter Porter, 9 points a game, and the super-slick guard combination of Bobby Mametsuka and Stacey Seiki. The team finished with a 7-1 league record, second only to the McAteer Jaguars who edged the Eagles by one point in the second round of the playoffs. Contributing to the Eagles second place finish were: Michael Chu, whose superb all-around play made him most valuable player, All-City Leabum Alexander, who averaged over 19 points a game, Paul Hirano, who averaged better than 14 points per game, Rodney Yee, over 9 points a game, Joe Bennet, 9 points per game, and Mitchell Lam, who came off the bench to pull down more than his share of rebounds while putting in over 6 points a game. Rodney Yee puts up a jumper. Paul Hirano flies for two. John Fisher stretches for the jump ball. This year, sports fans are probably still won- dering what happened to the Eagles Varsity basketball team. After brillantly winning the Mort Berger tournament, in which they beat Mission and Wilson, the team began their AAA season. At the end of the long season, the Eagles had won only one game. What was the cause of this drastic turn around? Was it the injury of Patrick MacArthur? Was it the stuffi- ness of the Washington gym? Was it the im- provement of the other AAA teams? Or was it a change of style by Coach McGrath? Whatever the crippling factor was, the Eagles would love to forget it, along with the 1977 season. However, the home court contest were al- ways full of enthusiastic fans, the real thriller being the Lowell game February 4. It was a game where players from both sides hustled, drove, dove, and even dunked. As Washington came roaring back, I remember hearing Humphrey Garret shout with courage: The Lord is up there! He is gonna help us! He helped the Eagles, but the Eagles didn't help themselves enough as they lost the heart- breaker to Lowell by three points. I know the Lord heard Humphrey that day, but I guess it wasn't His will for the Eagles to have a good season. Basketball team put in another fine year, making the playoffs and losing to first place Mission by only 3 points in a game in which both teams had the chance to win several times. The Eagle JV's only losses were away from home, which seems to prove the theory of the home court advantage amounting to about 10 points. Despite a lack of height, the team was well-balanced and played a tough, scrappy defense. The team was led led in scoring by Willie Bums and in rebounds by Paul Burger. All in all, The 1977Eagle JV Basket- ball team maintained the GWHS JV tradition of making the playoffs. In the last 7 years, this has meant 3 championships, and 6 playoff teams. In pre-season play, our JV's met a travelling team from Australia, where basketball has just recently been introduced. The novices proved no match for our experienced players, but the experience of meeting and talking to these young men from Down Under was unforgettable. Edwards, S. Goins, Mr. Anderson Girl's Basketball IN YOUR FACE!!!! The key to the enormos success of the girl’s basketball team this year was their excellent team work. Every member of the team played in every game during the regu- lar season. The starting guards were Lorraine Hirano and Serpreina Goins. Goins lead the offense by being one of the top three scorers and the top assist per- son. Hirano, our secret weapon, was the main ball handler and second in assists. The forwards were Donna Wong, the top scorer of the season and Mazzetta Garret, who stole an average of four balls per game. Wong scored the game high of 19 points in the Championship game to lead the Eagles to the Number One place in the city. Garret is an excellent rebounder, shooter, but her outstanding quality on the court is her ability to be all over the court. Her quickness and stamina kept the Eagles running game alive. Finally we have the center, the original starter was Robin Colhoun, an excellent shooter and re- bounder, but she was injured early in the season. Although out for most of the sea- son, Robin, managed to the win. Her regu- lar season replacement was Jenne Ham- mond, who did a splendid job as a center. The girls deserve the city championship because they are the BEST in the city I Girl's Volleyball - 2nd Place The girl’s volleyball team took the round-robin championship by going undefeated in the regu- lar season. The team often came from behind to win their games. When the playoffs came around, the Eagles lost their first game of the season to Lowell. They were hitting balls out that they usually hit in. Nothing seemed to go right. But since Washington won the round robin title they had to be beaten a second time. The Championship game was against Lowell again, and again the Eagles fell into the same rut. They could not get themselves together to beat the team they had beaten twice before. The girls finished a brilliant season in second place. Donna Wong soars high to spike. Hu?vNTAn°Cit(v w RtJ' N8a’it'rWOCk C' V.?’ F- Jans’ A- T°y. M- T°y. A. Wu. BACK ROW: M. Chau, L. Fong, S. Leath, F. Cady, Flash Firpo The Eagles varsity baseball team, suffer- ing from lack of spirit and experience, finished their gloomy season with a not-so- hot 2-14 record. One bright spot in the lineup was captain and shortstop Nelson Ginn. A member of last year's champion- ship team, Ginn was voted MVP and was also selected as a member of the High School All-American Team for 1977. Coach Firpo is looking forward to a better season next year. (Hopefully better than 2-14!) Washington High JV Baseball Team had a very successful year. Winning twelve and losing four; making the playoffs for the third year in a row. Outstanding hitter was Randy Rhinehart and pitching by David Lim, D. Youn, Von Hall, and P. Tsigileris. Stacey Cooper hurled the shot put better than 55 feet to earn first place honors in his event, and jumpin' Jeff Wells captured first in the long jump with a jump of 22'7 and also took third in the triple jump and the pole vault. Other varsity All-City runners included Darryl Matthews, Machel Bell, Vince Lehmann, Ed Marchand, and Lenny Fitzgerald. In the sophomore division, the relay team of Paul Burger, Eric Williams, Greg Quinine, and Jerome Matthews burned all other competition and won the 440 yard relay in an exciting race. Sprinters Burger and Williams also placed 4th in the 220 and 2nd in the 100 yard dash respectively. Placing fourth individually in All- City was Rumi Kobara. Virginia Yao, Stanford Yan, and David Bass received Honorable Mentions. Leading the team next year will be Stanford Yan, Daryl Look, Tom Brady and Sam Manzano. Rumi Kobara prepares to slice up her opponent. TAKE THAT! Swimming Mr. Ellinger's Varsity swim team ended their short season this year in second place and with a 4-1 record. Like last year, Lowell edged Washington in the All- City Finals because of their team's depth. But the Eagles fought all the way with great swimmers such as Sven Anderson, Simon Woon, Martin Yin, Mike Adams, and Paul Haas. FRONT ROW: (L TO R) P. Haas, D. Lee, N. Schmidt, M.
