I ntiiifUilifil m fiMlNfMI : f iu fulfil Hint! mmiimw nwnmiM f Hfn ff tU'i riffimwm intrimiiiL 1959-1975 1958-1975 in memoriam MARA SIMMONS VILATE BERNIER A boat beneath a sunny sky. X'lingering onward dreamily Jn an evening of July. Children three that nestle near. Sager eye and willing ear. Pleased a simple tale to hear. JCong has paled that sunny sky. Echoes fade and memories die. A utumn frost has slain July. Still she haunts me phantom-wise. Alice moving under skies. Never seen by waking eyes. Children yet the tale to hear. Sager eye and willing ear. Covingly shall nestle near. Jn Wonderland they lie, Dreaming as the days go by. Dreaming as the summers die. Ever drifting down the stream, Cinge ring in the golden gleam. Cife - what is it but a dream. •The poem ALICE PLEASANCE LIDDELL by Lewis Carroll was suggested by Liza Pon. SURVEYOR DEDICATION Mr. Madfes Retires Students and faculty alike were surprised upon returning to school this past September to learn of Saul Madfes' resignation as principal at George Washington. As Mr. Madfes tells it, he was a little astounded himself. Principal here since 1970, Mr. Madfes is not retiring from the education scene. He left G.W.H.S. to accept the position of executive director of the United Administrators of San Fran- cisco. In this new post he hopes to be able to participate ac- tively inthe affairs of San Francisco public schools for many years to come. No newcomer to administrative organization leadership, Mr. Madfes served three terms on the executive board of the San Francisco Association of School Administrators and one term as chairman of the U.A.S.F. before assuming his present full-time position with that organization. Mr. Madfes, who is a graduate of Lowell High School here in the city and U.C. Berkeley, studied education at San Fran- cisco State College where he earned his secondary school teaching credential in 1936 and at Stanford University where he was granted a secondary administrative credential in 1939. Specializing in counseling and guidance, he was awarded an M.A. degree from Stamford in 1949. Mr. Madfes' first teaching experience was at Calistoga Joint Union High School (in the upper Napa Valley) in 1937. He came to George Washington in 1940. After a tour of duty as a naval officer (mainly in the South Pacific area) during World War II, Mr. Madfes returned to this school as a grade counselor in 1946. Coach of the varsity basketball Eagles, Madfes was named head of the Boys' Physical Education Department in 1947. Mr. Madfes left Washington to become assistant principal at Wilson High School in this district In 1963 and was named principal there in 1968. He returned to his home school in 1970 where he soon earned the sobriquet Uncle Saul. SAUL MADFES Mr. Madfes served as fourth principal at George Washington since the school opened. His predecessors were Ernest J. Cummings, 1936-1945; O.J. Schmaelzle, 1945-1962; and Ruth M. Adams, 1962-1970. We of the SURVEYOR feel it's fair to say that whether one agreed or disagreed with his actions and policies, Washing- tonians knew that Mr. Madfes always had his school's best interests at heart and that he worked hard and well. The staff of the SURVEYOR OF '76 dedicates this book to you, Mr. Madfes, and we want to thank you for what you have done for our school. All at G.W.H.S. wish you future success. endA ieetA fiAat i: The colorful end-sheets of this volume commemorating San Francisco's 200th anniversary were created by Ben Chow of the graduating G.W.H.S. class of 1976. The SURVEYOR extends its thanks to Kee-Coleman Studios of San Francisco for the portrait of Mr. Madfes above, the Senior portraits, and for the photographs of the murals on the cover. Underclass I.D. photos were done by School Pictures of South San Francisco. This represented a strong finish, since the Washington eleven dropped two of their first three games to Balboa and Wilson. They came back, however, to be at the previously undefeated defending champion, Galileo. The Eagles weren't strong enough to keep the Bell for a fourth year when they dropped their final outing to Lincoln. Graduating seniors Reggie Elmore, Jeff Johnson, Ulysses Madison, Teddy Carter and Warren Mathews were outstanding. Coaches Ruane and Cal Ian are looking forward to the return of Timmy Jefferson, John McGuire, Mike DelBianco and Gus Rendon. Look Ma! Touchdown! Kerrrrrunnncchh! The Soph JV football team had a fantastic season coming back from a first game loss to win an undisputed second place spot. The team was feared for its awesome line of KEEVE, ROBINSON, HULTMAN, NAKASATO, BRANDBORG, and LUN. They opened the holes that the Juice Issac Wright, Bart Yoldi, and Geoffrey DeVaughn banged through. This combined with the masterful and cool quarterbacking of Keith Sanford and the excellent receivers EVANS, BRAY, BRADY, and Fast Shoes Dancy made the JV offense a very potent weapon. While the first defensive team played with MARR and COOPER sealing the ends and CLARK. SINGLETARY, and ADAMS closing the middle held all but two teams scoreless. In all, 37 young men received letters and the team spirit lasted the entire season and will be remembered for many seasons to come. ABOVE- The Eagles line up for an attack. They started slowly and improved as the season progressed and made the semi-finals and finished in third place. The 115's should be stronger next year with some of the following young men returning: Mike Chu, Paul Hirano, Marty Lassiter, Rodney Lee, Stacy Seiki and Humphrey Garrett. TTTB 125’s Basketball The 125's had three returning lettermen from last year's championship team. Some of the outstanding players were Darrel Samuels, Hoffman Wong, Sid Urbitzondo, Greg Wong and Melvyn Villanueva. The team had an outstanding year, losing only to Galileo, earning an 8-1 record. The 125's lost to Mission in the Semi-Finals, ending the season with an 8-2 record, losing to Galileo in a regular league game and to Mission in the Semi-Finals. When re- minded that the varsity had lost more than it had won, McGrath replied, One's point of view is determined by whether he is a naif or a member of the cognoscenti When asked what that meant, he said, The squad had serious physical handicaps. But the intensity devoted to the practice of the drill that would improve their skills, the constant loyalty to the team, their relentless pursuit of excellence- these are the characteristics of a successful team. I am very happy to have been associated with this team. Striving for the olive wreath (and failing to achieve it) can be the source of a large measure of satisfaction. Coach Firpo summed it up into one word: disappoint- ing. The team started out well, but as the season progressed, and more noticeably when 3 of the starting 5 players were deemed ineligible, a drop in performance was seen. Despite that, however, the JV team tried harder, but lost the rest of their games, usually by only a slim margin. With that effort, the JV team brought home a fifth place. The team complied a 10-1 league record, then went on to win the championship by beating Wilson, 13-12, and McAteer 4-2 in extra innings . The Eagle's starting pitchers were Freddy Hooker, Curt Harms, Chris Wyatt, and Robin Renfrew. Starting infield were Paul Sala- zar, 3rd base, Ken Jong, short- stop, Juancho Javier, 2nd base, and Randy Jenkins, 1st base. Outfielders were: Joey Reyes, Andy Noma, and Mark Ross. Varsity Baseball - First Championship The varsity Eagle Team is honored at Candlestick Park along with former Washington player, Montreal Expo's Jerome White. The Eagles' Varsity baseball team ended the season with the best record in the league. They easily handled O'Connell in the first round of the playoffs, but then lost to Lowell in the second round. In the decisive champion- ship game, Washington came from behind and beat Lowell, 5-4, in an extra-inning thril- ler, thus giving Washington their first Base- ball championship in the school's 40 year history. The fantastic championship team, coached by Mr. Firpo, had five All-City players. They were first baseman Jim Canellos, shortstop and Most Valuable Player Michael Johnson, third baseman Larry Hellesto, centerfielder Gosei Kimura, who stole 32 bases, and left hander Carl Geralds, the team's ace pitcher, whose clutch hitting as well as pitching helped defeat Lowell in the championship game. Rounding off the starting line up were Kirk Terehoff, catcher, Nelson Ginn, second base, Ken Shroyer, left field and pitcher, Mike Hursh, right field, and Bobby Barchard, designated hitter.
